- Hiya Guys!
Here is my (first!) RUclips video on how I apply a super easy and basic coloring to my lineart and also how I add shadow and high-lights.
I hope you'll find it instructive and useful :) Any feedback is welcome and I'd appreciate it.
Program/app used: ProCreate app
Pencil: iPad pencil
Tablet: iPad pro 9 inch
If you are curious or interested in which Procreate brushes I use, I make my own which serves my needs great! They are (OFC) available for download right here, via my Etsy store:

Whispers, “You can do what you want...” 👏
shut up 😁 she is giving a very detailed and well explained demonstration on one of the basic fundamentals of art and how to apply them digitally in procreate. no matter what kind of art you do the basics are important and its good to learn how to apply them yourself in a wide variety of styles and mediums. of course you can and should do whatever you want but that doesn’t mean you still can’t learn, especially the basics.
Also, I don’t think she’s pointing a gun saying “follow my tips video or else i’ll vaporize you” 😐
@@beepbears No need to be rude, dude. I was quoting her. Watch and listen again and see if you can find where she says it. It’s a good moment.
@@beepbears how about you shut up he never said that she was bad
And he said he was
A couple of thoughts. First, I am still learning how to use Procreate. I have artistic experience but now learning digital art. I love your method of teaching. You explain not only what you are doing but equally important, why. You don’t talk too much...as you said...LOL. The fact that you show and EXPLAIN your choices of layers...what they do, why they are needed and then demonstrate how they achieve the effects might be the BEST instruction I have received to date. I also love that you have an organized approach that makes sense and is easy to follow. THANK YOU for putting your heart into this as well as your skill. With Appreciation, Jimm
Dear Jimm! Thank you so much for that amazing feedback. That really meant A LOT to me :) I try to do what is intuitively right for myself aswell. I definitely think that there's room for improvement, but that will come with time I think :) I hope you have a WONDERFUL day and thanks again
Thank you Jimm for sharing this, I feel the same way. Amazing instruction, thank you Beinkamp!! :)
@@Beinkampdraws I have a teacher called Mr. Nordland. He was actually a substitute but the way you said that there’s room for improvement reminds me of a time he subbed for my class. We have a marble jar where if all the marbles go to the other jar, we’re rewarded, because we get marbles by behaving well. In the morning he decided to give us all of them but one, and he said his reasoning was that there is always room for improvement. He kept telling us not to have a good day, but a great day all throughout the school day, and he gave us his own quizzes and even though most of us got all of the questions wrong, some of us got his favorite number right, and we were so happy about it. We were all good sports and we laughed about it, and at the end of the day he signed autographs for us because one person got a note from him and then everyone wanted it. I just wanted you to know that you’re being compared to someone that >500 people love.
@@Amielle-in-Ami-hell amazing
Clicked on this because I liked the lineart but this is definitely one of the more useful art videos for a beginner ;)
I'm glad you lik the lineart AND the advice
Same! I made a picture of a cat with sketchy Lineart. I needed help with these kind of things, and this helped a lot! Thanks!
I would love to see the process of your sketching
I'll keep that in mind for my next video 😊
@@Beinkampdraws I totally agree, I love your cat picture.
your teaching is the best I have found so far, very easy to understand. Please make more.
Thank you for Not including background music, I find it much more difficult to learn from tutorials that do include background music.
I'm the exact same!
I bought Procreate because of the very positive feedback it has, however, I got frustrated really soon because I was kinda overwhelmed by the whole user interface; I have been an Adobe Creative Cloud user for years and I thought that maybe the change was the reason behind my frustration. I tried to gather some insight from RUclips videos but most of them are directed (maybe not on purpose) to people that has been working with the app for a while. Luckily, your video is nothing close to those, it is educational but you're not showing off, you're just doing your thing, explaining your decisions and ideas in a simple and easy to understand manner. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this video and as someone else said, thanks for not putting some distracting background music!. Keep it up!.
I switched to digital drawing last week.. I don’t think I’ll ever go back this is so much fun. Love your voice!
The multiply shadow thing BLEW MY MIND. OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH
New In digital art Thanks for this video ❤️
Yah
Same here

@Fisher Darius Any updates? I’m curious now
Same
I've been working with layers for years, so I'm not sure why this was such a revelation to me, but when you dropped the shadow layer in and then started masking it out to show where the light hits, it was like a switch flipped in my brain. Thank you! I've always struggled with shadows because drawing them in feels unnatural -- seems odd to _add_ something that is really just an absence of light. Shading the entire figure and then painting the light back in makes SO much more sense!!!
I'm just starting out with Procreate. Your Workflow was really interesting and educating and you have a great way of telling things! I would love to hear more about setting own brushes, and what kind you of settings you use. I'm struggling a ton with finding painting-brushes that I actually like... so that would be amazingly awesome! keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for the feedback :) I'm glad you enjoyed it
you remind me of bob ross and i love it (probably from the lack of background music which i think is a breath of fresh air).
subscribed.
James Julier Art Tutorials is the closest guy we can get from being Bob Ross.
This is..... the greatest compliment EVER!
One of the most helpful tutorials I've seen to date! Thank you so so much!
Just got Procreate and don't have a whole lot of time to figure things out on my own through lengthy trial and error. After trying to watch so many poorly explained tutorials, I finally came across this, which has really, really helped. Thanks so much!
What I like the most from you is that you are taking all your times in your explanations techniques and I learned a lot from you more than the other artist with numerical drawing or painting!
Stunning... thank you for taking the time to explain your method and show us how to make this happen....
I found a GEM! Please don't change the style of your tutorials this style is the best! I've learned so much just from this video than from the other 70+ art channels I follow and watch all the time! You actually explained the whys! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's the most complete tutorial I've ever seen. Even if I was surprised when I had to select a layer and lock it. Because if the colors are not uniform in the light layer, the shade layer become weird
Thank you thank you thank you for making a video that I could find when learning how to do light and shadows with the layers and things 🙏🏻 I admire so many artists who do this with their art but I’m just starting on procreate and it’s taken me so long to figure out how they take that next step in making their digital art more professional 💜💜💜
I'm so glad I could help! Keep up the good work
I really don’t remember how many digital drawing/procreate tutorials I’ve seen, yet yours has been the best. Thank you so much!
Your english is great. Don't be hard on yourself. These tutorials are fantastic! Thank you so much. I hope you continue to add more drawings. I just got my ipad and am starting with procreate.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm somewhat new to digital painting; I've hit a wall and this method is going to help me break through. I'm a traditional artist so these new blend layers, this way of thinking is sooo helpful.
When you lay the flat orange you can just outline the shape and fill in by dragging the color. I find this a lot easier than coloring the whole shape in. Great video:)
Thanks! I just learned after this vid actually - but sometimes I find it very soothing to block in the the color manually. Maybe that sounds wierd, but it's kinda like sorting the blue m&m's from the yellow - it calms my OCD brain XD
in short: use multiply blending mode, then erase areas that are lit
Thank you for this. I'm teaching myself Procreate and your technique has helped tremendously! Your way of filling the whole image with a shadow hue then using the eraser to 'paint' in the light makes sense to me.
I too, like your other viewers am just starting with procreate and I agree that your tutorial was very helpful, you explained beautifully why you choose what you did and then showed the results. Loved seeing all the editing/defining options in action. Your artwork is gorgeous! Please post more videos. Thank you!
Thank you Pam! I'm really overwelmed by all the nice comments and mostly I'm glad it's helping other people too. Good luck with your Procreate adventure! And I'll get to posting more videos, so stay tuned ;)
Awesome tutorial perfect amount of explanation. Very clear and concise
Great tips. You’re a natural
Glad you could use it :D and thank you so much!
I’m so thankful for this vid. I’m terrible at Procreate at the moment because I’m a beginner. I downloaded the app a couple weeks ago
Been drawing on procreate for over a year, feeling like I can understand and do a lot more than I could initially. If I had seen this when I started out I could be leaps and bounds more advanced, thank you for making a great tutorial!
Two types of shading, I believe those would be "cast shadow" (from another object "casting" the shadow) and "form shadow" (from the form of the object itself).
Your intuition is spot on there, just thought I'd let you know the technical terms for what you were describing.
I really appreciate your patients in explaining shadin on procreat it was a big help to who is just learning how to use it. Thanks so much 😊👍🏽
I’m so glad this got in my recommendation this is gonna be so much help, that you!! ❤️
Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve only been using Procreate for the past month and honestly your video is the bast one I found for digital illustration. Other videos have simple “tips and tricks” but you went into the mechanics of the software and showed me things that I was really looking for. Amazing work! I’m looking forward to improving my art and workflow as well as shortening how long it takes me to do a piece 😂
Thanks for that amazing feedback
Procreate is an awesome app. I just started my procreate ventures now and had so much fun 😊😊😊
Hey!! RUclips actually recommended me this video and glad it did - like seeing Procreate artists work in real time~ :3
This is excellent. Great drawing of the cat.
Thank you so much for this talk on light and shadow... Your voice is calming & your instructions are clear. Thanks...For my eye that left arm/paw of the cat seems slightly off kilter which I believe can be seen more clearly if you flip the drawing...
Excellent job. Thank you for a fresh and instructional video.
Beautiful!!!
Thanks lovely!
The most life-changing 30 minutes in my life. Thank you for this tutorial.
This is simply amazing and super useful. Thank you!
Bro you just explained everything I needed to learn in 30 minutes and I understood it perfectly....thank you so much this really helped
WOW! I've also started using procreate not too long ago and this video helped me learn SO MUCH! absolutely love your artwork !!
Aw thanks soooooooooooooo much Ally C! What lovely feedback!
SUBSCRIBED! 💖 I really enjoyed and learned from your video more than any other I have ever seen so far. Am totally new to IPad and Procreate and felt overwhelmed, specially from tutorials that sound as if I already knew how to. My favorite tutorial so far! Thank you so much 😊
you are such a great teacher. You make learning Procreate approachable. I'm a former photographer and know very well how important highlights and shadows are. But to place them and know where it needs to be placed and how to feather is harder than I thought!
I love your relaxed style, your skill and you explain the "whys" of each layer. You keep it simple.
I've had Procreate for years and it's not time with your help to learn how to use it. Thank you for sharing so generously. You teach an important skill! Where would we be without art?!
Thanks for reminding me about the power of layers used in selections. Nice that you took it from the foundational color and built up from there.
you're an angel. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for the tips!! I really enjoyed watching and learning from you.
Oh my! Ur voice is so clear the auto captions can pick up every word exactly. I haven’t found that in a lot of videos
It surprised me too XD
honestly thank you so much for this! i really struggle with shading so much
Your welcome! This method is just soooo goooood. So glad you could use it!
I’m really enjoying the fact that this is your first tutorial AND ITS SO AWESOME! I’m so happy that it popped up as a choice to see this morning. I was actually going to search for something else, and then I saw the little kitty and though hmmm why not. I love this tutorial. :)
First video I’ve seen of yours. Well done explaining, and your style is gorgeous!
Thanks for the best Procreate tutorial 👌👍.
I love your style of both painting and presentation.
Don’t ever feel insecure about your vids - you do a great job
Thank you! I have looked so long for a Tutorial like this. Never understood the other ones but yours helped me ! Thanks a lot ! :)
thanks for these tutorials. I am just getting started with Procreate and you have a nice, calm approach to your work and it is very much appreciated.
Excellent video! Best tutorial in my opinion. You really nailed a lot of techniques iv wondered about while other tutorials just kind of grazed over them as if you already knew what had to be done or why it had to be done. This is perfect for what im trying to achieve with illustrating a childrens book iv been working on for about 6 years. Im also a professional tattoo artist and this is also gonna help me with color samples to show clients before I actually tattoo them. Thank you for this!
Thank you for sharing this information in such great detail.
Thank you for the fantastic beginners lesson
Just a thought about the blue colour you chose at 14:57, probably because blue is more or less the complementary color of orange. When you mix them together, you will cancel the hues, which will results in a greyish colour and it will enhance the depth of area in the drawing. NICE WORK, thank you !
This tutorial is the most helpful I’ve watched so far. Thanks so much for this!
At 5:25 u can either select it or you can press ‘alpha lock’ in order to make sure that whatever ur gonna apply next doesn’t go out. U can also create another layer on TOP of that layer and press ‘clipping mask’ to make sure it doesnt go out. All of them are the same but its just up to your preference like if you want your shadow for e.g to be on another layer or in the same layer :D
You are so good at explaining ! Thank you
This was a great introduction to colouring in procreate, thank you so much! I love the cat pose as well!❤
So much of this applies to painting. Bravo! I really enjoyed watching this, you definitely killed this tutorial!
GREAT JOB! I love your speech pattern and style. Does not seem like a first tutorial. Again, great job. keep up the good work. Looking forward to more tutorials.
Great tutorial. Very easy to follow, glad you explain why you made the choices you made, and you picked a project that the right level of challenge to get excited to try ProCreate out.
This channel has huge potential. Quite mesmerising. Gentle voice, elegant hand
So kind of you to say!
That was great. You put it across really well!
Thank you for taking the time and patience of making this tutorial. You help me to figure out a lot.
It’s very well done video. Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge.
Really amazing and informative! Thank you ♥️
So helpful and BEAUTIFUL!!!💜
Aw thanks so much! Have a great day!
Thank you for sharing! Amazing work
I love it. for a moment I thought it was just going to be red and you kept saying I like this color while in my head I said wata sucky color just red. but when you started blending I was WOW. I love it.
just a lil tip, when there’s “dead space” or a part where you’re stuttering lots (uh, uHm etc) cutting them out can shorten the video:)
thank you for the video🥺 the second part with the masking layer helped a lot !!!
Beautifully done - keep up the great work - cheers
You 're an amazing artist! Love your style of lines AND coloring.
Thanks so much. What a lovely compliment
this was really enjoyable and really helpful!
Awesome video! Thanks so much, really needed to know how to layer mask
Your videos are so helpful and well-explained! Your work is beautiful. Thank you!
Just came across your video, and really enjoy listening to you. Thank you for sharing this! Really impressive, great tips! I can also relate to your impatience 😂 Sometimes I just can’t wait to see how it’s going to look!
Wow this was really helpful because I was unsure weather I would like it but you definitely showed me how fun it could be and you have a very simple tutorial thanks for that
so helpful!
Great video, you are an excellent teacher & artist! Thank you for sharing this!
This is an excellent organic video! I learned a lot with this!
Thanks so much! It's a little old though 🥴😉 I was thinking of doing an updated one going through some of the same techniques. But I'm glad you got something out of it! The basic principles never changes 🥰
@@Beinkampdraws I noticed you were using the Apple Pencil 1st Gen. You’re right though they don’t change! I just started using Procreate and your video was great. I look forward to more from you! 😎
Thank you very much. This is one of the easiest videos to follow on applying color using layers.
Basic things in digital art
-Brush tool (you guessed it for drawing)
-eraser tool (for erasing )
-layers (you can use layers to separate, sketch from line art, it’s very helpful if you messed up on the line art you could easily erase it without erasing the sketch)
-crop tool (you can choose what to cut from the painting and reposition it or put it where you want)
-eye drop tool (copying down colors on the painting)
-smudge tool (for blending colors and more)
-canvas flip (which makes your digital art Symmetrical)
Wow! Very helpful. Thank you!
Another really interesting thing you can do is use the desaturated version of the complimentary colour of the dominant base colour to build the shadow, as you have done here with orange and blue. This makes the image pop and is quite fun! Really nice and informative video!!
I've only just discovered your channel and I'm so glad I did! You have a very good teaching technique. I especially appreciated your comment "that with digital art 'you can do anything you want to'... I needed to hear that. Thank you very much for this tutorial :-)
Must say you are quite skillful! I don’t mean in Procreate specifically but overall artistically. Your linework is great
This is a big help! Thank you! Look forward to more of your tutorials!
Fantastic video and drawing! Love the shadow and light on the cat! :)
This was extremely helpful TYSM!
Most helpful video I seen by far .. most videos just show people work on fast forward and give no advice and flex their photo lol. Anyways thanks this simplifies a a lot
Thank you Beinkamp watching this video has help me with procreate and color so much i learn from it because you are a really good teacher
No apologies you speak English very well and clear :)
And talented you encourage me to draw from memory and use my imagination drawing from reference is natural and helpful. Using your memory and imagination is a rare gift these days and I think it’s a wonderful thing that you trust your instincts and have such a deep connection with your art in this way :)
Thank you so much for being yourself . Blessings:)
