I’ve been using procreate for over a year professionally and I just learned from this video that when you select you can hold the select to zoom out and not zoom the image. I had to watch the rest to see if I had somehow not learned something else as obvious as that. Amazing video, this will be a great workflow boost.
I only downloaded Procreate today; so I'm a complete beginner. I cannot thank you enough for a superb introduction. Everything about it is great - what you demonstrate, how you do it - all great. Thank you very much!
Three days in and this is by far THE most informative and straightforward video yet. Tapping the pencil twice for eraser or pencil...Genius! Thank you for making my life that bit easier.
@@teiaboynton5295 it is the Apple Pencil, and I like the 12.9 iPad Pro, but that’s just bc im designing tattoos all the time. You could use the smaller ones and it work great!
Oh wow. I really wish I'd found your vid last year. it would've saved me from so many headaches. This really is the best and most comprehensive guide to Procreate that I’ve ever seen! Thank you so much!
One stop shop for sure! Edit and cut unnecessary lag times without annoying background music too?! The promised land of RUclips tutorial material *tears up*
2 additional tips I have not seen (but may have been) mentioned: 1. Using "Automatic Selection" works like the "Color Drop" aka "Fill" option you've showcased. If you hold you finger on the area instead of letting go, a threshold slider will appear at the top of the screen. Adjusting this threshold will allow you to select how much "tolerance" the automatic selection has, or how much space the color fill should occupy when not given a solid boundary. Also, selection tools can be combined for better results (use automatic for a rough selection, refine with freehand). As far as I am aware, this feature was present in the app when this video was made. 2. When selecting brush size, you can tap on the handle, and in the size preview that pops up, click the top right + icon. This allows you to set various size presets, and get back to them quickly. This would really help the workflow described in the video (where few size values are used). I believe this feature was added after the video.
Depending on your settings you have a max limit of layers, just learned that grouping layers still counts toward max limit of layers. ie if your max layers are 16 and you group 15 on one layer with 1 layer ungrouped, it will not allow you to add a 17th. Even if you group them all onto one, still cannot add 17th.
I merge them once I know I no longer need them on a seperate layer. A good tip is to start at a lower resolution, 300+ dpi still, when you are ready to finish you can merge layers as necessary and resize the canvas (resample canvas) and make the resolution higher as you need less and less layers, finishing on the highest resolution for crispier detail work.
A tip for the same drawing Lets say your drawing a face, Add a new layer, draw your eye. Duplicate the layer, use the curser selection tool, flip the eye and you can move it the side
omfg I literally downloaded procreate like 20 minutes ago just so I could start learning to draw my own tattoos and after watching a video on the basics, this was the next suggestion! The universe must be telling me this was a good move lol
My prayers have been answered I was HOPING you’d do another procreate tutorial since your last procreate video. THANK YOU TYLER. You’re so helpful and informative with the way you break things down in layman terms 🤟🏼
Yess! Glad to see prayers answered ! No problem. Thanks for the support.. And I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen someone spell out “layman terms” and not just say it.. so thank you for that first experience lol
Honored to be your first. I would love to see your shading process in procreate. What brushes you use. More specifically what you use to achieve “grey wash” shading to translate into your actual tattoo.
Great tutorial. One old comic book artist tip I'd give is to do your sketches in a light blue (non-photo blue) color. That way when you're doing your final layer you don't have to turn your sketch layers on and off as much as your final blacks are easily discernible from your sketch.
Really nice tutorial. Yours is only the 2nd one I have watched on Procreate and I am glad. No need to watch anymore, especially for beginners. Thanks for sharing
Great video!!! I’ve been tattooing for over 30 years & I am always pushing myself to learn more & new things...I’m seriously glad I found your RUclips channel & I have learned something from everyone one of them!!!
Really great tutorial. The first one I’ve watched that actually went enough beyond “Open procreate” but not get lost in the weeds at an appropriate level.
I like this tutorial because he kept it short and to the point instead of rambling on about one feature as if he was doing a podcast making me lose interest ... He made important points , showed how it was done and moved on ... That is how a tutorial should be ... Excellent work 👏🏻❤
If only all tutorials were as awesome as yours! I watched it on my computer, pausing all along the way, to watch you and then try those things on my iPad. Perfect!!!!! Thank you.
I’m not into tattoos at all, but in my opinion you could make a good living doing exactly what you’ve shown us here! So informative and succinct. Thank you and well done!
Thank you!!! This is literally the best tutorial I've seen and it's guided towards tattoos! It's embarrassing how long it took me to figure out the perfect circle function by myself haha!

As someone whos looking into art i just found this video helpful and am looking forward into digital art 🎭 appreciate it my guy 🙏just earned a subscription
Been struggling to learn on my own watched several videos but nothing is even close to what u just explained appreciate it made my life hell of allot easier
This was so helpful, thank you! People kept telling me how this app was so powerful and “so intuitive” but I got it and just kinda stared at it… the main interface is so stripped down compared to things like Photoshop and Illustrator that I’ve used in the past, I really didn’t even know where to begin. I feel like I actually get why people are so excited about it now!
Thanks for this video. I have been making art on computers since the 80’s but I am new to owning an Apple Pencil with an iPad Pro and these streamlined interfaces on these touch-centric apps were giving me some trouble, I could not FIND most of the functionality that I was used to! 😀 This one video just unlocked a lot of power in Procreate that may have taken me weeks (or longer) to uncover. I really appreciate it.
Just picked up an ipad, the pen, and procreate for the first time and was a little lost tbh. I'm glad I found your channel, this vid is packed with helpful info and saved me a lot of time and probably frustration. Good look bud 🤙
I just got my iPad Air 4 with the Apple Pencil wanting to get back into my artistic side and keep my mind off things and occupied. Upon installing procreate, it was a foreign language, but man did this guy kill this tutorial! You made this learning process a hell of a lot easier. Big preesh on this one man. I owe you a beer!
Very nice tips, especially the right hand interface option. I am left handed so switched this option off, but effectively end up messing with the size/opacity while drawing. So changed it and will have a go in this setting
You have saved me from giving up on Prcreate. I have struggled just trying to make get to the basics and EVERYTHING you covered is wanted to know to get started. I thank you VERY MUCH. I know I'm shouting but that's how I feel. Thank You.
Correction: Procreate's ability to do large canvases and layers is directly related to how much RAM your iPad model has. The less RAM the less # of layers allowed for larger canvases. You can group a bunch of layers together but you may still need to flatten that group before being able to add layers. Again, depending on the size of the canvas. You can not add layers to a canvas indefinitely. Additional tips: you can hold down a double or triple tap to undo/ redo a series of steps without having to tap for every single step. The S is the "selection tool" and the Arrow is the "move tool". When something is selected you can use a three finger back n forth swipe to clear the selected pixels from that layer. The same gesture you did for the perfect circle can be used with lines to make them snap to 15° angles. Easy grouping: with one layer selected, tap and slide right on other layers to select multiple. At top of layers panel you will now have a new option to group or delete. I love Procreate!
I used to like drawing and stuff like that in High School but haven't done any of that in ages. I'm buying an iPad Pro and Pencil specifically for Procreate. The digital art world is so cool. I'm not a big Apple fan in terms of phones or laptops. But the iPad and Pencil in particular are such cool pieces of tech that have no equal.
That’s awesome you are getting back into it. I use to use nothing apple, then I got the iPad and now I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone just because for work flow, airdrop and the creative apps they have are great.

But now I have evolved into the the pens and rotary witch my first time it was so quiet I turned the voltage up so high that I tattooed my chest and split my skin in half and was wowed by the machine back in 2020 during the Covid outbreak. I watch all your videos and would like to know more and better ways of developing my skill into the 2025. I have worked at a few shops with outrageous booth rent drugs and other issues so I now tattoo a home but would really appreciate your thoughts on Procreate and the bundle kits to build my tattoo art that saves me time and money instead of hand drawing everything out with pen and paper. Thanks for this brilliant tutorial Mr. Tattoo guy. Out of curiosity. If you are using streamline on max, and you are finalizing a sketch, it doesn’t seem to follow the sketch line to perfection? It seems to fall short on your line during this video?
You have a video on shading? Can’t seem to find any but I see a lot of clips of people doing sketches and it looks like they use a certain brush that just does the shading for them and the pictures end up looking amazing
I don’t.. I honestly don’t do shading in procreate. It’s either to make a stencil for a tattoo or full color designs. Using the air brushes will give you nice shades tho! Also if you use some of the texture brushes that could be cool too!
I will have to buy an Ipad for work purposes... and I thought, well let's see what it can do, and I found this video... Holly guacamole!!! What a perfect, thorough tutorial! I am deeply impressed...!!! I knew nothing about procreate, and I feel like (even though I don't even have the computer yet) I truly feel like I could actually draw something!!! Thank you heaps!!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!
That’s awesome ! This is a super basic tutorial too. There is so much more you can learn. I have a full procreate tutorial playlist I add to regularly you can check out as well!
UPDATE: The streamline option got changed the 5.2 update. It’s under stabilization now. Also smoothing/stabilization.
I hate that they move it bc everyone asks this. Thank you for commenting this lol

So what you are saying is that if you can only have16 layers then you can't have 17.

Great content right here.... Best procreate for tattoo artists I have seen....
Spent 4 hours watching pro create videos and pissed that i didnt run across this one first. Smh. BEST pro create tutorial hands down!
Haha that sucks. Glad it was helpful
great tutorial at about 2.50 mins in you did this thing where you drew 2 rough circles then did something and made it into a perfect circle
All you have to do is draw the rough circle then hold your pencil down and it will make it a circle (:
Thank you for this vid! I just got my first iPad today and this video is super helpful 🔥
WOW. I watched all of the video. Highly useful! Thanks.
Thank you for a super helpful tutorial. I learned more from you in 18 minutes than I learned in several hours of other sources. Well done.
That’s awesome ! Glad it was helpful !
