    Homeschooling now for seven years and this is our first year using IEW. Phonetic Zoo is a big win in our home! My kiddos are really loving it. Also using SS and Fix It Grammar. SS is tough for my 11 year old son who hates to write but he is making good strides so we are sticking with it. My daughter who loves writing and is 9 is loving it. Our other favorites this year are Christian Light Reading, which in my opinion is a hidden gem as well. BJU for math. We are very thankful for an abundance of curriculum to choose from! 💓

    Agreed on several! We love IEW, Apologia, and Generations. My oldest is 6th grade but I actually just ordered some of the high school books for myself from Generations. I hated history in (public) school when I was a kid so I don’t even remember much but now, as a fairly new believer, I want to learn all the history as it pertains to the Church and Jesus. I’ve really been loving the Generations podcast too.

    We will never not do Fix It Grammar - it's amazing! We also have been loving Notgrass History for the last 2 years. And, maybe an unpopular opinion, but The Good and The Beautiful for math just works so well for my youngest two. My oldest tried nearly at least half a dozen math programs and Saxon with My Math Assistant is finally working fantastic for her. Also, September & Co resources for bible, hands down.

    We use teaching text books and love it! I did pause it for about 2 weeks, my son was having troubles breaking down the world problems so we spent some extra time on that and have resumed as usual. 😀

    We use teaching textbooks. My friend stopped using it because her daughter had great grades but wasn't retaining the information. Well she found out it's because they can skip the lesson and can literally answer 1 problem correctly and it will show 100% and they can go to the next lesson without doing all the problems. So her daughter waisted an entire year and had to repeat that level the next year. Parents need to check to make sure the work was completed instead of just looking at the grades. I believe there are parental controls also. My daughter loves it and does so well with it. I do understand that not every program works for every person but this could be the reason for some of the negative rumors and they may not even realize it.

      this is why we won't use it. My child always finds ways around things on online programs. I also know a teen that passed everything up through high school on TT, but wasn't proficient enough in math to go to college. Maybe it works for some, but not for all.

    Just switched my kids to IEW and I’m astounded at how wonderful it is! Love, love, love it! Apart from that we are Sonlighters. (Just not their LA. 😊) And we use Life of Fred for math.

    I started my 3rd grade daughter on Fix it Grammar this year and it’s that first thing she always opts to do to start her school day. I don’t foresee ever not using it. Definitely will try S&S in a year or two or maybe Zookeeper too. We did not enjoy Apologia Science at all. 🙈 I feel like everyone loves it but the Land Animals focused so much on scientific names/animal classifications that it really took away from the fun of learning about the animals. Maybe my kids just aren’t Science-y kids. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    All About Reading is the only curriculum that works for reading with my 7 year old. So that one is definitely one that is a must have for me. For him also MUS is definitely his curriculum.
    MFW for the elementary years. (Adventures is my fav!)
    Masterbooks and Answers in Genesis for apologetics. Masterbooks math also works well for my oldest.
    Thanks for your video Mandy!

    I don’t think Teaching Textbook issues are all rumors. I tried it with one of my kids, he got great grades and liked it well enough, but he retained zero. He got the right answer when using that program but couldn’t do the same type of problems on paper. Just my experience!

    • @mandy-maltz
      @mandy-maltz  Год назад +1

      Right, and it won’t work for some kids. MUS didn’t work for us, so I totally get that. But it’s definitely a full curriculum and not a supplement, that’s what I was trying to convey ❤️

    We started using Fix It Grammar qnd Phonetic Zoo this year, and love them. Structure and Style, however, was not a good fit. We have tried TT in the past but retention was very low. The complaints I've seen about it in Facebook groups is that the child was ill prepared for college, and didn't find out until then.

    MasterBooks/Answers in Genesis for Apologetics, Bible, Science, and some electives. I’m looking foreword to their Logic, Worldviews in Conflict, Comparative Religions, Cultural Issues, and Life Science courses in high school.
    Notgrass-we finally found this year 6 of homeschooling (last year).
    IEW too-we have found it’s best to transition to this in 5th grade for us 😊
    ACE Word Building for Spelling. We found this last year and my oldest finally enjoys Spelling after trying a couple other methods.

    We started IEW’s S&S this year, and it really has been a game changer. It’s so amazing how all of the complaints about writing vanished once my son finally understood it.
    Do you do IEW writing courses with your kids EVERY year, or do you switch off? I’m struggling with curriculum decisions, because I don’t feel like IEW is a complete language arts course by itself, but doing IEW and another LA course together (which is what we’re doing currently) is very time consuming…

    Quick question about IEW. I have a 3rd and 4th grader would I incorporate Abeka with IEW? Or just IEW? We're currently using BJU for grammar/writing, but they're struggling the same with writing and being creative..so looking to switch this upcoming year.

    I clicked on your video and have watched a few of your reviews because I’m starting to wonder if the curriculum we’ve been using the past 3 years is enough. My oldest is heading into 4th.
    My question is, as I research new curriculums, how do you switch curriculum when it appears you’d have to take your child back a grade just to catch up?For example LA. I especially want to switch that but we’d have to go back at least a grade, if not 2 grades because of how little our current curriculum has taught or reinforced. I feel as though that would be even more discouraging for my oldest.
    To simplify-how do you switch between curriculums when each one appears to have a different pace or different sequence of what knowledge should be taught first?

      If I question where my kiddos need to be, then I usually do one of two things:
      1. Take a placement test
      Or if there is no placement test
      2. Email/Call the company and ask
      Most companies are wonderful about getting your child correctly placed in their program.

    • @homeschoollifemom
      @homeschoollifemom Год назад

      Take the placement test and place them where they need to be. I don’t know the ages of your kids but mine don’t know what ‘grade’ their curriculum is. As long as it’s the right level for them and doesn’t feel like baby work I think it would be fine.

    Quick question about TT, do your children use it at their grade level? I guess I’m asking the ages and levels you chose this year, if you don’t mind sharing. Trying to figure out where we want to be by 12th grade.

      Yes, although one of my children is a year ahead. He’s advanced though.

    • @GardenMinistry.
      @GardenMinistry. Год назад +1

      I've also heard other parents say they go by the level their child is on and not necessarily by the "grade," this is good to know because some parents are turned off by TT when they assume it's "too easy" for their child who is advanced, all they had to do was switch over to the next level and they'd be much happier! Check out Mandy's other videos on TT she has great tips on how to use this curriculum more effectively. A large amount of mom's at my co-op use TT and say it's their favorite, especially when they have so many kids to teach it helps a lot. They also have kids that graduated using it, it's solid. I'll be using it next year 😊
