One thing Infographics failed to account for in this: Simo did all of that despite only having the bare minimum of military combat training (just a year or two of service). He didn't make a living as a soldier, he was a FARMER for most of his life. And he didn't only hunt in the snow, he hunted in all the seasons that Finland could experience, so his shooting capabilities weren't just limited to his tactics during the winter.

You actually greatly understated Simo’s achievements. He had notably more kills, survived several artillery barrages called in solely for him, and incapacitated multiple tanks.

My point still stands that Simo would adjust to any environment as he could survive even when the enemy was raining artillery shells on him. He also disabled vehicles and used multiple weapons. Simo was not a designated marksman. Large groups or no, Simo is the more skilled warrior.

Finland isnt covered in snow year round, so Hayha would have seen forests. Also since Hathcock used a scope, all Hayha would need is a glint, which he would use to effectively counter snipe, snipers. However being from Arkansas, I can say we dont get snow often, or even frigid winters, so Hayha def has that advantage.
in the Vietnamese canopy you’re not gonna get a glint so again it depends on the environment
Forests aren't the same as jungles. Just because Hayha has hunted in a forest before doesn't mean he would do well in a Vietnam jungle environment.

7:05 Another you have to think about is the accuracy / placement of the shot. If it went clean through the optic of the rifle, that means the cobra was also aiming at Carlos, meaning he escaped death by fractions of a second.
That also means he quickscoped him, Cobra was already looking at him for likely 0.5 seconds meaning Carlos was a lot faster than him
just means he was looking in his general direction.
@@redmoose1447 You cannot have that precise of a shot with just “general direction.” That’s like saying you’re going to land on mars because it’s “that way.”
Remember, this is an American soldier in wartime. Propoganda and embellishing feats is part of the job to keep citizens onside and pro war. I'm not saying that is what happened but certainly has to be considered.

The pronunciation of White Feather in Vietnamese wasn't any better. Still, It was an ok video but with a bunch of illustrative mistakes for faster upload time like the Belgium flag and a squad of Soviet troops carrying Thompsons.

Simo Häyhä did at least 505 confirmed riffle kills.. Without a scope. Most likely it was something between 505-542
(Mosin Nagant M/28 riffle ) And over 200 with submachine gun.
His winter war diary has been found he wrote. "here is My sin list"
There is another very very important reason for Simo to not use a scope: the fact that, if you put your skin against metal in a -40 Celsius environment, your skin will freeze itself to the scope...
Problem with that is you don’t put your eye on the scope most likely would be the bolt that would freeze to you

To me what would have been better for the match is if it took place in a cliff-side spruce forest with partial snow cover & lots of foliage (like ferns), As that is probably the closest thing to a mix between tundra plains and a plant-filled jungle.
I am so proud of my grandfather and his brother for fighting and defeating the Soviet threat. My grandpa lost his brother to a landmine, and kept fighting still. He married his school-time girl-friend and then fought in the Continuation War where he got wounded and sent home.
My grandpa was a warrior. He was an embodiment of Sisu.

Its not 259 confirmed kills on the white death, its 542 confirmed kills.

The only reason I would side with Hayha over our own Hathcock is the scope. Scopes gave their targets away to them, and may have been why The Cobra was already aiming right back at Hathcock. Hayha not using one might have been the scale tipper between two highly skilled snipers such as themselves.
That’s not a reason to side with Simo. He took 100 yard shots. Hathcock killed targets at over 1000. Haycocks scope was also shaded.

Well it's obvious it's simo cuz he's way smarter and more crafty and Carlos uses a scope and when simo See's him " he's in the bullets way, the white deaths prey"
@@sumaoncrack2251 It's not so obvious. Both showed almost incredible patience, Carlos crawled for several days a journey that takes a few minutes to walk, and Simo waited hours in icy weather. And while Simo mostly used defensive warfare against both infantry and snipers Carlos more often than not had difficult targets that required him to not give away his position too early.
In addition, Carlos had a lot of training in hunting snipers while Simo instead usually only had to defend himself from those who came towards him.
@@ThisIsMeAndNooneElse yeah, it's one of those situations where another one is great at defense, and the other great at offense. So most likely a draw would be the result if we ignore the different environments they specialised in.

But, if let's say in the desert, only hills to hide, they both would have to find each other, press the trigger FAST.But then that's just luck.
I definitely agree this would end in a stalemate. Especially with one other important factor.
By the time Carlos Hathcock was serving the Marines during Vietnam, Military tactics and guerilla warfare changed significantly from World War II. Hathcock definitely was capable of blending into the Jungles of Vietnam with a Ghillie Suit. With that in mind, if we planted him in the Cold Winters of Finland against Simo, Carlos would have adapted to the environment making it increasingly difficult to pinpoint him. It would be more of a cat and mouse game between the two with no real conclusion who would come out on top.
But hayha had no scope and Carlos had scope and a bigger advantage
the winter war was not part of ww2. it happened before stalin truly modernized the military. they still used old ww1 tactics.
you also underestimate the winter of finland. its REALLY cold, and before global warming, it was even colder. there is no reason to believe a man from Arkansas could adapt so fast to the winter of finland.
30-06 is the same as 7.62mm. Exactly, the only difference in some instances is cartridge length, the bullet would only differ by a grain or two of weight and thus the bullet size has little to do with it. They'd have similar powers, though one might be a higher velocity due to a higher powder charge. Future reference in that is all

What you dont acknowledge in the video, is that Häyhä is also been trained in summer conditions in the Finnish Army.
So i think he would also manage to be as clever a soldier even if it wouldn't be in winter conditions.
Can we all take a moment to relize that Simo would lay in snow for hours, and it was freezing. And also the fact that he shoots things less than a second and can easily spot scope glints, I think the white death would win this. (In my opinion)
Duhhhh. Not moving under the snow is worst coz ur taking in all the cold, and cold doesnt improve accuracy. NoScope so no way to see him and you bring a scope so he can see the dude. I've often wondered what would happen if these two legendary snipers would go up against each other. And I had a feeling that it would come down to what sort of battlefield they would fight on. But how about one that is a lot more neutral to both snipers.
I feel like the fact you pointed out that a scope will give away position tilts the advantage to White death as he doesn't have a scope to be a disadvantage. He just has keen eyesight and insane accuracy.

1. No scope, harder to spot
2. Committed to camouflage, who says he can't learn the way of camouflage of the jungle. He may as well put dirt on his mouth, glue leaves to his face, etc.
3. The rival the white feather, literally has a white feather on his helmet and used scope. He literally won against the cobra cause of the scope, so how he fares against the opponent who didn't have a scope.
4. The other qualities are pretty much the same, both were extremely patient and had incredible endurance.

2. White Feather could adapt to a cold climate as well.
