- Ohio to Erie Trail, July 2023.
Yep -- We travelled from the beige and pleasant land of Southern California to Elizabeth's green and pleasant ancestral home in Ohio. I thought this was a very chill and therapeutic ride, probably due to the (largely) absent cars and the calm green rain foresty views. Get in the zone, kick back and drift downstream on the OTET trail. Oh yeah.

Music In order of appearance:
Raspberry Jam -- Allah-Las
It's a Fine Day -- Opus III
Sonido Amazónico -- Los Mirlos
Digeridoo -- Aphex Twin
Ohio has the highest bike trail mileage in all 50 states.
SW Ohio has the greatest matrix of bike trails in America.
Thank you for the wonderful video of my home state. The OTET really is a hiden gem. The trailhead in South Charleston is 15 min from our house, and we have rode the half from Columbus to Cincinnati. We do need to make the plans to do the northern half. Glad that y'all had a good trip.
Very well done video - I love seeing people’s impressions of my state!
Was the family you stayed with in Bath or Fairlawn? I grew up there and ride my bike over the ford on Sand Run Parkway almost every Sunday to have dinner with my parents. Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else film it.
The Towpath bike trail goes another 30 miles or so past Massillon but the canal went all the way to the Ohio River.
Even being from this state and visiting friends often in Columbus we still have gotten lost north of there too. 😂
Thanks for the shot out!
Hi Tim - glad you liked the video! Thanks for the comment. For the water crossing we were on our way back from North Wadsworth - I have a dim memory of going throught a hedge at some point. Ohio was a real summer pleasure and so different from California in almost everyway. The canal went to the Ohio river? Bloody Hell. Your OTET video helped us commit to doing the ride -- thanks for giving non locals a good look at this beautiful area.
Thanks for the good review man! I'm a Cincinnati boy and I bike the lower reaches of the Ohio to Erie frequently and the mid section of the trail when I get the chance . . . never been north of Fredericksburg though. Nice to get some video of the towpath part of the trail.
We do have some nice bike trails in SW Ohio. I'm lucky.
Thanks for sharing! It's always interesting to hear what people think of Cincinnati and the Little Miami Scenic Trail. We use it so often that we take it for granted.
We also rode OTET last month but north to south and enjoyed it tremendously, especially the section between Columbus and Cleveland with the historic canal, amish farms and old industry. By coincidence we rode Xenia to Cincinnati on the 16th and must have passed you! We planned our trip to do this section on a Sunday because the Little Miami Scenic Trail is closed at Grandin Road due to bridge construction. But they don't work Sundays! I noticed in your video at 03:05 the detour sign is laying down so you probably didn't even realize it.
I live in KY and my wife and I drive 2 hours north to ride the Little Miami RT…very nice!!!
Great ride and video. But my man, that was a lot of junk food. Eeek lol
Live in Cleveland for close to 30 years. Walked on the trails in Cuyahoga National Park.
Much greener here all year long than CA or most west parts of USA.
Ive ridden from Columbus to Mason and back on this trail. Very nice.
What an epic ride! Thanks for sharing it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this awesome video. We used to live in that area, so we have such good memories of cycling the paths there with our sons.
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. It was a super fun and relaxing ride, am having good memories too!
Sorry Columbus was less than pleasant to get through. The Alum Creek Trail should be open again in the fall and the usual Ohio to Erie Trail route is easier. We're glad you enjoyed the overall greenery and smooth linear trails.
Thanks for watching. The Columbus reroute was a bit of stress in what was otherwise a very memorable and relaxing ride.
Many thanks for your awesome work on this great trail!!! Much appreciated!
Great video! I ride the trail between London & Cedarville a lot. I'm checking out the Kosing Gap trail in a couple weeks and I got sneak peeks of that area thanks to you!
Love Allah-Las
too right - I just added the playlist to the blurb. For some reason YT did not automatically credit by name the Allah-Las.
Y'all sure made a great video, I love videos with scenery like this. I can tell there was a lot of work put into making this a I thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video on What not to eat.
Just kidding.
You sure picked a hot month in a hot year.
When you go through Xenia.... don't mention Tornadoes. They have had a heck of a bad history with really destructive and deadly storms.
Cheers.
Oatmeal cream pie 4EVR! 500 calories. Mission critical.
Very enjoyable video and informative! Thanks for posting
excellent video! editing, drone shots, narration, all great.
Much appreciated!
Check that box off your bucket list; thrilling trip.
I can see you were impressed. It surely is a great trail. I rode part of it in May but planning to go back and ride all thing like you. Thanks for a preview. Well done video enjoyed watching 👍

That is super cool! I am from Ohio and i had no idea that there was a trial that far!
You came to CFulton great you saw it
Great video, very informative. Just subbed.
Hi TravelingThru222 - thanks for the sub and comment! Must say I have been following you since Eureka, Montana (not literally). Much appreciate your vids on the GDMBR - one of my goals. Coincidentally, I too was in Eureka, same week.
Nice video, very well done - cheers!
Favorite quote from the video: "Hello ducks" 😂
Glad you liked it!
Nice video.
Thanks!
Wonderful video. I live a 1 mile ride from the Milford Trailhead. I ride this trail 3-5 times each week between Cincinnati and Morrow.
Thanks - Glad you liked it!
Loved the video. I live in the centerburg area. I have been riding bikes since 2015. I was planning on riding it in 2018, but was sidelined by a car crash that had me in recovery until fall of 2022. They said I would never ride again. I'm riding this trail this summer. Hopefully the end of June 2024
Thanks! Its a great ride - good luck and enjoy!
What a wonderful video! Looks like your trip was well spent - and the wildlife was incredible! What camera were you filming with? I noticed the falcam mount on your backpack, but never what you had mounted there. It was incredibly clear!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. The volume of wildlife was quite a surprise and a joy. I used a GoPro Hero 10 with a mic and a Panasonic Lumix G9 mostly with a 35-100 pancake zoom (aka 70-200mm).
I once rode from toledo to Edgewwod KY by way of the Simon Kenton trail over 2 days. I love that whole trail system. I want to ride the leg up to Columbus.
Something this video cannot capture is the feeling of accomplishment you must have had at that intersection at 15:15. That was a hell of a hill, probably the steepest one on the whole tour. Which isn't much compared to other areas of the world, but pretty intense relative to riding the wonderful flats and gentle grades of this trail. My father and I rode this just a month or so after you did, what a great tour!
What was your favorite part about the trail?
Hi - thanks for the comment, that was one of the big hills, am remembering 200ft. We travelled really light :). The whole trail was awesome - if I had to pick a section the Millersburg to Akron section had so much variety _and_ gorgeous scenery, it was a highlight.
I have ridden the southern parts of this trail for years. It was nice to see you enjoying it. We just rode the Xenia to Yellow Springs section yesterday. Did you stop at any breweries along the way?
Hi - Thanks for the comment! We kept pretty close to the route, so I guess we didn't see any breweries at the right moments. I left it out of the film, but we got to sample Ohio diners, mid west doughnut shops, Skyline chilli, and more. Very different for us - we had a blast!
Looking to work up to doing this path this year or next
Have fun and pack light - look out for the weather!
I live up near Cleveland and was just on the Cuyahoga Valley National Park section of the towpath yesterday. Glad you enjoyed the ride from Cincy to Cleveland. Maybe someday I'll get the courage to do it haha
Mt Vernon 1.5 hrs from my house
Nice vid. What brand and model bikes did you use for this trip?
Hi, Good question. Gravel Bikes, obtained used. I am riding a Salsa Warbird (2019) custom GRX build kit, and Elizabeth is riding a Pivot Vault SRAM kit (2018). Both these bikes are a ton of fun both on and off road, and we ride them a lot. I was riding on 32 or 33mm almost slick tyres, Elizabeth was on 38s. My inner bike nerd says this is the Achilles' heel of the 2018 Vault, since 38mm is the absolute max, and makes me think about a swap for the 2019 (increase max size to 45mm).
You ever come this way again. Ill show you canal Fulton r to t
Thats it, i knew someone ate a oatmeal pie.your bad listed
Akron 20 minutes
Why all of the gear if you never camped?
Hi, even not camping, we still needed a bunch of stuff for spares/repairs/clothes/food/video/life...... Bike 40-45lbs. I did not know what to expect, so I just brought all the standard stuff, apart from the tent and sleeping mats/bags. We had zero mechanicals, but thats just the way it is! Yes, I took a down jacket. hahahahaha. List adapted from Pedal Powered Adventures packing list.
Minimalist list of stuff for not camping: Socks, Rain jacket, Rain Pants, Hat, Down jacket, swimming stuff, Off bike short sleeve shirt, Off bike shorts, Off bike shoes, Water filter, Head lamp, Ethanol Stove, Stove fuel, Sporks, Towel, First Aid Kit, Bicycle Lock, Spare Tubes, Patch kit & tire boot, Tire plug kit, Sealant, Safety wire, zip ties & bolts, Spare shift cable, Duct tape, Chain lube, Tire pump, Bikelights, back lights, Electronics, Bicycle GPS, Phone, Power brick, Charging Cables, Earbuds, GoPro, Camera Panasonic G9, Drone dji Air1 and RC unit, Ear plugs, Tooth brush, Tooth paste, Tylenol/ibuprofen, sunblock, coffee/tea/filter, cups, clif bars and snacks, knife/multi tool, insect repellant, toilet paper, plastic zip lock bags.
can't IMAGINE riding with a backpack! WHY?
If you haven't done the katy it should be on your list
Agreed - I have a cunning plan to join them all together

You should have jumped in the Miami River.
