The problem with the kiss in Superman 2 is not that it's a "fake" or "imaginary" power that's just stupid as opposed to much cooler imaginary powers like flying. The problem with the kiss is it's lazy writing. Fantastic worlds and people make for great stories. But they have to be consistent. Pulling "new" powers for superman out of one's ass in order to fix a plot corner, the writer painted themselves into, will always feel "cheap". Writer's can create any world they want. But once they set the rules of the world, consistency is important.
What Clark did with the Super Kiss in Superman II was he deprived her of enough oxygen effecting her short-term memory. Sorta like the condition in the Adam Sandler comedy "50 First Dates". Emotional trauma of the entire ordeal she has been through like the audience in the first two films plays a role in her ability to recall events or lack thereof.
I like Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's a proper, concept-drive science fiction story. I think that Star Treks II - VI, whilst enjoyable, are more character-driven hero stories, and somewhat indulgent to the cast.
I liked it enough, too, but would always, always fast-forward through those panning scenes. Enterprise flying into that V-Ger ship was such a lame attempt at remaking the 2001 "through the monolith" scene.
@@wildmanfisher I made myself a cut of the film, way back in the VHS days, that was something like 30 or 40 minutes shorter. Cut down the panning shots, shortened some of the long stares, and that mostly did the job. It still wasn't as compelling as "Khan," but there's a decent movie in there. It's just hidden by the leaden pacing.

Depends on the variation of Superman. Golden Age Superman can hypnotize people, but he limits that usage to convincing people that Clark does not look like Supes with glasses on. Also, I have fallen asleep within 30 minutes of starting Star Trek The Motion Picture, every time.
Superman returns wasn't bad. The biggest issue with it though is that it was essentially superman 5, so this is where they could bring in a new villain like brainiac, but who do they choose? Why Lex Luthor of course.........again
Lois Lane's "I Spent The Night WIth Superman" story that was published is referenced in Superman Returns, so...no big surprise there for her to realize her son is Superman's. But still, K Smith is hilarious in this
I understand that comic book fans would have been disappointed by its lack of originality and daring ideas, but as just a film fan and having no knowledge of comic books, I absolutely loved it.
I loved superman so much around the time the movie came out, was looking forward to it for two years sayed up all night on june 29th 2006 to watch the Reeve movie, went to the first showing of returns and fell asleep, thought it was because of the staying up all night, by the second trip to the cinema I knew that wasn't the reason. thank god for Zach Snyder, he gave us the superman we deserve.
I don’t give a shit what everyone else says Superman Returns was a good superhero movie this whole bull shit that it was terrible lol fuck that it was really entertaining.
One thing I really didn't about Superman Returns is how technology advanced by 30-40 years, in the span of 5 years after the first or second film. Folks went from typewriters to desktops and flat screen televisions. Plus Superman and Louis Lane aged backwards.
People complain the hell out of Man of Steel, even though I enjoyed Man of Steel though I will admit it wasn't a perfect film but at least shit actually happened in Man of Steel. At least he battled someone and didn't get his ass beaten and throw an island into space.
John Doe It's not that there was too much destruction, it was the character of Superman that ruined Mos. Superman is a virtusl Olympian god raised as a man with values of defending those weaker than himself. In Mos, they turned him into a hero who hates being heroic. And as for destruction, Superman fought Did in a populated area and allowed horrendous collateral damage (which is the reason Batman started to see him as a dire threat in BvS) and didn't even try to lead the fight away. The main issues I, and many other comic fans had with Mos is the Superman in that movie was a completely different character to the Big Blue Boy scout we know and love. Perhaps if he changed over time, due to the events in various film's, that would be fine(like he changed over time in the DCAU, and they had an episode where Captain Marvel was used to show how dark Supes had gotten, but it happened organically over Superman TAS and Justice League) but in Mo S he was raised to not get involved and to let people die for no good reason. And don't get me started on the body count left by Bats in BvS again, they don't show how he got so broken as to break his _only_ rule, no killing. People have read and loved these characters for decades, yet with MoS and BvS we get elseworlds interpretations advertised as the real thing.
I had the honor of playing Christopher Reeve's character in "noises off". It was an excellent show and incredible. I was Superman. Not my favorite, but an honor. Watch the movie. But the play is way better. Guys, take your lady to the theatre. Trust me
I get that you wanna hear him be honest about what he likes and dislikes but, he's famous. If he talks shit on like suicide squad, someone who worked on that movie is likely a fan of Clerks who says "Awe man Kevin Smith say he hates this think I worked on, he's my hero". Idk if that happened it would probably make you feel bad about it and put you in a bad mood.
The impression I got the entire movie was that Lois knew 100% that Jason was Superman's son, but she didn't know (yet or for sure) he had super strength. When Lex suspects his parentage and waves the Kryptonite in Jason's face, she is obviously lying when she says that Richard is the father. Even Richard seemingly has his suspicions, at least that they slept with each other, as seen when he asks Lois about the "Night I spent with Superman" article.
I don't know about why people hate this movie, but I am confused on what Superman Returns was supposed to be. It does have great ideas (I especially love the scene of Superman floating in space listening to the whole planet), but it does not deliver on them entirely. And come on, Warner Bros.! Use a new villain already!
10+ years on, I can appreciate it for what it was, a love letter to the Donner franchise.... And yet, when I saw it as a kid, I vividly remember being bored out of my fucking skull.
I like any movie that has Matt Damon and Ben Affleck acting together. They were childhood friends and they act off of each other so well. Good Will Hunting is still one of their best.
yes he might be bitter that WB got rid of his script, but you gotta admit he points out a lot of the big mistakes on superman returns. I agreed with everything
Man of Steel is the Superman film they should have done in O6 taking advantage of the technology we have and still maintaining rich characters with depth.
Shoveler: Oh, don't start that again! Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing doesn't wear glasses. Mr. Furious: [Long-suffering] He takes them off when he transforms. Shoveler: That doesn't make any sense. He wouldn't be able to see!
I used to make fun of Kevin Smith for how he dressed but I heard an interview where he admitted he has body shamed himself his entire life and then I just felt bad for him. He dressed that way out of embarrassment. :( So happy to see him much healthier these days.
If you dissect the film you see that he wasn't trying to recreate the film, Superman was trying to recapture something he lost. The movie was great and depicted Superman as it should have. -A fan since long before Doomsday-
I still think the '78 Superman is the best Superman film ever made and Superman doesn't throw a punch in that one either. While I enjoyed Man of Steel, Superman's heroics don't hinge on violence the way they do for other superheroes. Superman Returns was a flawed film, but not for the reason Smith gives. The biggest problem with Superman Returns, in my mind, was its reverence to '78 Donner film. See, Richard Donner made a film that was steeped in Superman mythology. He gave us a straight-faced take on Krypton and Jor-El and Lara, on Smallville and Clark's coming of age, the Fortress of Solitude, then Superman's rescues in Metropolis and squaring off with Lex Luthor. Yeah it gets way cheesy, but the point is, Donner dug deep into Superman lore to create an epic Superman film. Singer didn't dig into Superman lore. He dug into the Donner films. Donner showed reverence to the Superman source material. Singer showed reverence to Donner. THAT was the breakdown.
Part of the problem was that they messed with the formula. The Lois/Clark dynamic was totally changed, the father/child relationship never quite came together and Superman felt more disconnected in general. Some of it made sense, Lois had moved on after five years, but the chemistry wasn't there anymore and nothing came forward to replace it.
Well, Reeve's Superman never threw a single punch in "Superman the Movie", either. And it still worked perfectly!! His Superman was just more full of joy and confident, had more charisma and a positive outlook...
Thus lies a big issue with writing for Superman and his villains. You either make them as OP or more. And in doing that there's nothing to stop that opposing force.
Loneliness is not a trait of Superman, and that was my biggest problem with this movie. Superman is so disconnected from people in this film, and yet that isn't who Superman is from the comics and it wasn't Christopher Reeve's Superman. What makes Superman so human is the fact that he comes from a world that was so ahead of us and yet he lives among us as if he's one of us. That's what makes Superman the most human of superheroes. This movie just didn't have that or Reeve's characterization.
I liked Superman Returns. I always have, I just thought the good stuff in it was always enough to overshadow the bad, but within the context of seeing Man of Steel I grew a whole new appreciation for it. In terms of tone, the Chris Reeves Superman movies and the Zac Snyder versions are polar opposites with the Reeves movies being incredibly corny and the Snyder film taking itself way too seriously. Yet through these extremes they both hit a very similar problem: Plausibility. The Reeves films were too goofy to be considered close to reality with a bit of dated dialogue as well as outlandish solutions to problems like reversing the earth's rotation. The Snyder film tried to be a little closer to realism, but that illusion was shattered because of Superman's incompetence as a hero lot's of smaller logic gaps like sacrificing your life in a storm for a friggin dog. Point is, the common complaint among fans is that the Reeves films are overly goofy and the Snyder film is overly dark and pretentious. Superman Returns, in my opinion, hit's the perfect balance. It's got the colorful wonder and enchantment you can find in any Superman comic like saving a falling shuttle and being impervious to a gun turret's barrage of bullets, but it also addresses character weakness in Superman FAR better then Man of Steel did. Take for instance the premise: Superman hears that there may very well be remains of Krypton left, and so he goes away for a while to try and find it only to come back empty handed. This leaves him initially depressed because he thought he could finally go back to his routes only to find out he is still terribly alone. But through this realization he remembers that he still has a home amongst the people of earth and that he still has the opportunity to use his incredible powers to do great things. This ties in greatly with his conflict of Kryptonian versus human. Not only that, but it's puts Lois in understandable emotional denial because she just can't believe Superman would up and leave like that. The years without Superman's presence prove uneventful and so she comes to a decision that the world didn't need him. Superman proves her wrong by taking her on a flight and saying "You say the world doesn't need a savior . . but every day I hear someone crying for one". This is great development that the Reeves movies didn't have and the Snyder film failed at executing properly. It shows how Superman's absence hurt Lois even though she tries to deny it and now that he's back she can't help but feel whole again even though she's denying that too. It also proves to be great commentary on the idea of humanity needing a savior (Superman is ALWAYS great commentary for that). The movie is about Superman discovering his place in humanity once more, and it's very satisfying because it's got all the enchantment of the Reeves films but brings to the table a surprising look at Superman the reeves films never really offered.
MIKELIN8 I mean I get where he’s coming from. These are superhero movies. They’re supposed to entertain and Superman Returns didn’t really entertain. X3, as shitty as it was, was the more entertaining movie if you walk into it understanding that the guy who directed Rush Hour is directing it, not Bryan Singer. If a movie opts to not be entertaining, it should at least be moving. Shawshank Redemption, Schindler’s List, they’re not there to entertain you, they’re there to make you feel something deep down. I figure that’s what Bryan Singer was going for in Superman Returns, but Superman just isn’t the character for that
Smith must have seen a different movie than I did (or all that weed changed his perception) because I got the impression Lois clearly remembered her affair with Superman and in Singer's original cut, she covers for Superman when James Marsden notices how much Clark looks like him (both examples of what Singer ditched from Superman II and what he kept). Its pretty clear to me that she knew her son was Superman's but she didn't know how much Kryptonian DNA affected him (or did Smith forget the scene where Lex, suspecting her son's parentage, waves kryptonite in his face and watches for a reaction?)until he threw that piano at the thug(or is Smith assuming the "Superman's Babysitter" strip is officially canon, now?). It does illustrate the biggest dark cloud that Superman Returns had for me months before it was released: Singer's slavish adherence to Superman II despite the fact it was around 30 years old and all the inanities in it (the Magic Amnesia Kiss included). Seriously, when you're trying to sell a movie to, primarily, a young general audience, you shouldn't assume that they've watched a movie that was made decades before most of them were born and know it by heart! Singer's Superman II is a great example of what happens when a Fanboy gets waaaay too focused on his favorite version of a Franchise Character and doesn't care if the audience doesn't share his views! To quote another Franchise's famous tagline: "With great power comes great responsibilty." Singer was given great power with the Superman Franchise but he acted without responsibility. And thus it is best to think of Superman II as a one shot Elseworlds issue
You can call it "art' if it generates an emotional response in a person obviously in your case it did so, so it can't be all bad, even if not all good glad the film touched you in a positive way, congrats on being a dad hope you and son enjoy many geek movies together !
When I saw Cavil in that film Immortals, and he's standing there with his large red flowing cloak at some point in the film, I thought, THERE'S !! your new Superman. Then after my girlfriend calls me as says - guess who's the next Superman, I didn't even hesitate to guess who it was. It was Cavil. And I wasn't even surprised. He's the perfect choice!!
No. Even the worst DCEU or MCU is still miles better than Superman Returns. Also the heart attack and large amounts of weed have changed his outlook on life. "Better to light a candle than curse the darkness" is a quote he uses alot when it comes to pop culture nowadays.
Problem is that everyone bitched about Superman Returns being boring as hell cos Superman doesn’t throw a punch then bitched because in Man Of Steel there’s “too much action and fighting”. People suck.
Everybody that was there on this night was truly living in the moment. I know it was the nineties, but there’s no phones or cameras in their hands. They’re watching and listening. Being completely respectful for the man on stage.
7:14 - Why would Lois question when she and Superman did the deed? If he's as big a Superman fan as he claims, he'd know that they did it in the Fortress in Superman II.
You know what other movie has a Superman that doesn't throw a single punch? Richard Donner's original 1978 "Superman" movie. Still the best Superman movie, possibly the best comic book movie ever made. Am I wrong? It's been at least a year since I've seen it so I could be forgetting an instance. If I am, please describe it so I can revise my assertion. Thanks all.
The biggest flaw of Man of Steel is the fact that Clark never faces any consequences for killing Zod and allowing Metropolis to be levelled it’s completely inaccurate and unjustified as an ending to the what was largely a great movie with a new interpretation of Kal - El
Concreteowl I think this is a common thing that happens with people. When a shitty movie comes out and then later a n even shittier movie comes out, we tend to think the previous one wasnt that bad when in reality theyre both terrible
+Pale Horse I'm not so sure it's his directing, it's the writing, whoever that is. I like Snyder's visuals, he's a visonary don't get me wrong. But in both the movies he's done with superman, the writers or whoever don't quite know what to do with superman. Cuz in BvS he just kinda mopes about and then dies and in the first one its y'know an origin story so it's just introducing him. I did like the idea of him killing thought it was an interesting take on the character it was something new, but his guilt for having to kill was never addressed in BvS (that I can remember, correct me if I'm wrong) and the first thing we see superman do is straight up kill a man! Or put him in the ICU anyway. I'm just not sure they know what to do with Superman. Get someone on board who knows about superman like Max landis for example. As controversial as he is, he knows superman and writes good superman stories and he is a screenwriter. Get him in and ask him what's what with superman. But whatever I couldn't make that movie. Like if Zack Snyder came up to me with a time machine, took me back to day 1 of pre-production and said "you fuckin make it then" I'd cry and pee myself. Or maybe I'd make a cool film but probably not.
+Jak MP Ha ha, good ending. I do agree that the writing is lacking and inconsistent. It sounds like we disagree on Zack Snyder's directing, and that's fine. I feel like every movie he's directed since 300 are dominated by the same gray, brown, and black coloration and are typically more style over substance.
+Pale Horse oh no that's completely what I was saying haha. style style style. I do kinda dig the visuals though. you can't deny he does cool visuals. but beyond that not much
+Jak MP Yeah, he does sometimes. I thought 300 was good overall, and it had a ton of great visuals. Sucker Punch was cool to look at, and not always just for the pretty girls in hot outfits.
Kevin Smith, pay attention to movies when you watch them: 1. Lois DID know her son was Superman's. You can see it in the nonverbal performance when she's around both her son and Superman. She just didn't know how or if to tell him, until the end. 2. In Superman II, both the theatrical version and the Donner Cut, Superman and Lois "do the deed" at the Fortress of Solitude." That was when her son was conceived.
Yes we know that he had sex with her. THEN HE WIPED HER MEMORY… Therefore she should be wondering where her superman like kid came from you fucking morons that’s the point he was making you idiots. He clearly acknowledges that the events of superman two happen that they had sex and that he wiped her memory that’s what makes it illogical that Lois is just fine with having Superman’s baby since she wouldn’t remember ever having sex with him.
@@wildmanfisher You're out of your mind ... all those sequences were beautiful .. .I agree with you about the 2001 references ... I prefer to think of it as a homage, because it still felt like enough of it's own thing to keep me loving it. The transhumanist propaganda was thick with the resolution .. but that's ok though .. It's star trek after all
Depends on the variation of Superman.
I wish Kevin was this honest about his opinions today
Zach Snyder killed the DC cinematic universe lol
That was joss whedon
Restore the snyderverse got more Twitter mentions than avengers endgame.
I fucking love it..... he says "why does that's getta boo? Is he not in a wheelchair? YES! I rest my case" lmao
I’m in the minority in that I actually really enjoy Superman Returns
I don’t give a shit what everyone else says Superman Returns was a good superhero movie this whole bull shit that it was terrible lol fuck that it was really entertaining.
I think it's the best Superman movie personally. The only one that explored his character and showed the hardships of being Superman.
But he certainly got his ass beat in BvS. MoS is ok but BvS is ridiculous
Man of steel was great it's better than Superman returns! That movie was boring I keep falling asleep on it.
"Which means hopefully Superman gets to punch somebody."

Actually he’s said that he only likes to talk about movies he likes now.
Alsoalso it's just as easy to lift up as it is to tear down, why would he waste energy tearing people down when he can (try) to lift em up...
Emo Superman for the entire film

And pretty much ruined by homelander
This is widely ahead of it's time, by the way.
To be fair: in the comics, there was a long period where Superman’s powers expanded as needed.
I cant help but like this guy. Great guy. Loved Dogma. Amazing movie.

So happy to see him much healthier these days.
This is perfect
Part of the problem was that they messed with the formula. The Lois/Clark dynamic was totally changed, the father/child relationship never quite came together and Superman felt more disconnected in general. Some of it made sense, Lois had moved on after five years, but the chemistry wasn't there anymore and nothing came forward to replace it.
Well, Reeve's Superman never threw a single punch in "Superman the Movie", either.
And it still worked perfectly!!
His Superman was just more full of joy and confident, had more charisma and a positive outlook...
Superman Returns was definitely boring.
I know MOS has divided critics and fans alike, but I like the movie.
LORDUnLuCkY13 agreed
If Superman punched anyone, he'd kill them, hence why he doesn't punch anyone.
Thus lies a big issue with writing for Superman and his villains. You either make them as OP or more. And in doing that there's nothing to stop that opposing force.
Boring.
He punches people in Superman II, and when he finally does kill someone he doesn't even punch them.
@@mickeye6428 Those people he punched were Kryptonians, and if you're talking about the diner scene, he had given up his powers at that point.
@@Lost_n_Found_1 He fights more than just Kryptonians and there are two diner scenes. He still punches people.
I wasn't fond of Superman returns either.
However,Smith is wrong about the rescue scene of the jet & space shuttle./
It was spectacular.
Superman Returns is seriously underrated

No, its really not
Star Trek TMP is.
For real. I enjoyed it. My only complaint is that he should have actually died sacrificing himself.
Susano -wo that was going to happen in Superman Lives before that got scrapped.
i'm sorry but superman returns is a badass movie. just re-watched it the other day. loved it as much as i did as a kid when i saw it in theaters
@Thomas van Kampen This definitely didn’t age well 😂🤣😂
She wrote the 'I spent the night with superman' article though, it was referenced in the film.
I guess X-3 was better because more stuff got blown up? Other than that, it was awful, too.
I'M THE JUGERNAUT BITCH!!!
I figure that’s what Bryan Singer was going for in Superman Returns, but Superman just isn’t the character for that
If you think X-3 was bad.....Try Dark Phoenix
jb111082 They both suck on ALL levels. Plus the real reason why Dark Phoenix is failing is because of Disney buying Fox, who distributes it!
You can call it "art' if it generates an emotional response in a person
obviously in your case it did so, so it can't be all bad, even if not all good

Superman Returns isn't that bad. It's a much more coherent film than Man of Steel that's for sure.
Dude, you're fucking crazy.
The biggest flaw of Man of Steel is the fact that Clark never faces any consequences for killing Zod and allowing Metropolis to be levelled it’s completely inaccurate and unjustified as an ending to the what was largely a great movie with a new interpretation of Kal - El
All Snyder can do is make a coherent universe and you pull that off too?
Concreteowl I think this is a common thing that happens with people. When a shitty movie comes out and then later a n even shittier movie comes out, we tend to think the previous one wasnt that bad when in reality theyre both terrible
Superman returns ruled!
I know this mostly off topic, but I like Henry Cavill as Superman. I wish we could see him being Superman away from Zack Snyder's horrid directing.
Henry Cavil is a great Superman though for sure
Kevin Smith, pay attention to movies when you watch them:
Did Kevin not see the Donner cut of Superman II, as soon as he had his powers taken away he nailed lois
