The Great Netherlands Horse Rescue

The biggest horse story that came out of The Netherlands in 2006 was the amazing tale of the Great Netherlands Horse Rescue. A group of about 100 horses were stranded on a small piece of land when the waters rose unexpectedly after a fierce storm. The horses were stranded for three days on a tiny sliver of land. Firemen and animal welfare officers brought the horses food and water to keep up their strength. As wind and icy rain blasted the horses, they huddled together with their rear ends facing the wind. Finally on the third day, the great rescue was made.
The video of the horse rescue is incredibly moving. The combination of the horse footage and music will bring happy tears to any horse lover's eyes. The sound starts about a minute into the video.

I wonder if these brave ladies know that, after all these years, people are still watching this and are amazed at their courage and skill, not to mention the wonderful horses they rode!

I've seen it hundreds of times and can watch it over and over again. Today this is the third time I have watch it...it brings tears to my eyes...Love it
there was this woman, Norma Miedema. she was there, from day one. she is the one who called for help, no one helped her. from day one, SHE was the one who told everyone to help tear the fence down and get a horse and go into the cold water and confince the other horses it was not deep enough to drown and it was save to cross over to the main land.
but no one would listen to her. not the mayer, not the firefighters, not the God damn army. and then there were this girls who 'suddenly' came up with the same idea and guess what? the plan worked and no one has ever called Norma's name. the forgotten woman of the north. SHE is the true hero because she cared enough to be there, 24/7 in the cold water.
SHE deserves some credits too!!!

What an epic rescue! To see those horse all huddle together like that, and then begin to follow the lead of the riders, was truly amazing!
I can't believe I found this again! It's been fifteen years, and still sends chills up my back.
The heart of a woman; the courage of a warrior. Horsewomen of Holland you have been written in ink on my list of all-time heroes.
Everytime I watch this it makes me cry. Such an amazing rescue of these horses, so moving. And these women who saved them are heroes. They didnt just watch but came to action. Beautiful, great example of how we should help and care for animals.
The only reason human beings are on the earth is to rescue animals in need. Apart from that, we wouldn't be missed.
Computers sure have progressed in the last few years. Somehow those horses managed to splash seawater right through my screen and onto my face!

Still all these years later still brings tears to my eyes watching this, the complete trust to follow.
It's so interesting to see the chain reaction of everyone lining up after some of them followed the lead-mare. And zero hesitation.. the trust in the herd- even if it's a merged is so strong..

People may make fun of the herd instinct, but with capable, careful, knowledgable leaders, a lot can be accomplished.
This doesn't just work with horses.

It may be the biggest single horse rescue in the world, and the most beautiful sight..
Excellent use of horse psychology. They were ready for the 'boss mare' to lead them out. "The leadership role in a herd is held by a mare, known colloquially as the "lead mare" or "boss mare." The mare determines the movement of the herd as it travels to obtain food, water, and shelter. She also determines the route the herd takes when fleeing from danger."
true Leaders never push....lead by "example" ... the herd will follow! BRAVO!

Those women were magnificent. I have watched this many times, it always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for your bravery and amazing horsemanship.
This took everyone working together, finding the route, and the expert horsewomen and the beautifully trained horses they were riding. Also a herd of horses naturally respond to the Alpha Mare !!

It were 7 partly extremely young women. Their names are listed at the end of the original clip, with the names of their horses. The one on top had the idea but the Authorities fight her since many years as she also rescues other animals. She finally simply rescued the horses without allowance. Horses kept drinking salty seawater although they brought freshwater by boat.
SIX riders and their mounts. PLUS the woman who led the whole rescue.
6 Women and one of their was pregnant and she didn't know at the time.
There are numerous morals to this beautiful story of love, care, compassion, vision, courage, strength, determination, communication, working together and blind faith. Thankyou for reminding me xo

that took teamwork, the finale of which involved the 6 women. Before that, there were those who rescued the 1st 20. And there were those who prepared the path that was to be used. CONGRATULIONS TO all for this Grand Rescue!
So moving. I've watched this clip and the longer version more than a dozen times over the years.

Still one of the greatest rescues. I thought of this because i saw two horses who had a similar problem on 9gag. After seeing that i had to see this again. Well done, great edit with your choice of music. Those women, firefighters and everyone who made this happen back then are heroes for life. Have a great day.

I have got to learn to not chop onions while watching youtube videos. This is such a beautiful show of generosity by these ladies. I hate that so many of the horses died but I'm happy that the majority of them were rescued. They are such majestic creatures.

Anyone who has had a horse or the opportunity to be around horses long enough to understand them can tell you how intelligent they are. If one has the blessing to be with one for a period of time, as I have, there is a spiritual bond that develops that is difficult to explain, but wonderful none the less. Very cool vid.
I haven't forgotten you women for saving those horses.. always thought of you and the horses with warm feeling.

What a beautiful story and most of all, what a beautiful ending. Where were the men, though? Why no men joined the rescue efforts? My hat off to the brave women who save those poor horses.

The men could not get it done and would not listen to Norma and then some horsewomen came along and somehow showed the horses they could trust them, and the rest is a history.

A magazine article showed pics of an elder horse being helping to land, then later one horse faltered when it reached the grassy land, all attempts to keep it alive but it succumbed.
Yeah one horse was supported to walk by three or four men helping him across. Few girls were seen rubbing him down, covering with straw and giving him immediate care and attention but they brought him across rugged up and wearing a sling so I'm guessing he was barely able to stand when they first got over. He was shattered poor lad.
