I’ve going on 4 years of dancing now, but Im going into my 3rd year of ballet. My appointment for my first fitting is soon and I’m soo nervous! I started doubting myself so I found this video and I’m more confident now😁 my balance, my posture, my strength, it’s all really good. Though I have a flat foot so arching is much harder for me, but I’m working hard with my teacher.

I just ordered my first pair of Demi pointe shoes. Because I have been in and out of different areas (jazz, ballet, gymnastics, cheer, Arial silks, figure skating, etc) due to moving or lack of money, I really want to make sure I won’t hurt myself since I really only have RUclips and my Gigi (she was a cheer captain and then cheer and dance mom for about 20 years but she is not a teacher) to help me, I want to make sure I won’t injure myself. I stretch and stretch and stretch constantly and I’m going to be spending a few years in Demi pointe unless I am able to get cleared by a ballet teacher and started getting supervision. Still, even getting Demi pointe is a dream come true. I’ve been fighting for ballet specifically since I can remember. I’m 16 btw.

I started when I was 9/10... pointe shoes never really hurt my feet until I got my 3rd pair when I turned twelve, which was the summer before 7th grade (my age rn, but I started school, and I had the other 2 pairs of pointe shoes for a full year each, only did like 20 mins of pointe for each class every week and there are two classes per week though) and that's the first time my shoes felt less comfortable. The big toe on my left foot hurt more (I put part of a cotton ball in for more cushion and it really helped but made the shoe feel smaller). It was also a different brand and harder than my previous shoes. Since I'm currently 12 I've aced the test pretty easily but then again I've been on pointe for 3 years and going. I heard at some point at a different studio that you should have done ballet for at least 5 years before getting pointe shoes (which meant I would have started 1 year ago if I didn't switch studios, not for the same reason). Back when I had gotten my 1st pair of shoes I had only been dancing for 3 years (I'm in my 6th year right now) so I didn't necessarily fit that rule which I was kind of worried about when I got my 1st pair. Luckily my pointe shoes were fitted nicely and I haven't had many problems. The ones that I have now are the ones that are a different brand than the others and harder than what I was used to back when I had my first and 2nd pairs. I have had my 3rd pair for 3 months and I can't tell if they are dead or not. They are a lot easier to go up on and my toe doesn't hurt anymore. It also fits my foot and feels better which is normal because my pointe shoes change to the shape of my feet. They are pretty broken in but I can't tell if I'm going over them or not. My teacher looked at them and didn't necessarily say they were dead but she also didn't say they weren't dead, so I'm not sure. I can still dance in them pretty nicely though.

I don't do ballet (took beginner classes once a week for a year, long time ago) and only very ocassionally do sports, but I could do all of these without any trouble. I did start walking on high heels at a very young age and tend to stand on my toes when I'm barefoot without being aware, its an automatism (my calves are quite short due to the heels). Figured that might be why I passed the test.

I started ballet classes again 2 weeks ago and I had my very first pointe class this week. I had to quit dance along with ballet because of Covid but now I’m so glad to be back, I started ballet in the second grade and did it up until Covid along with other dance genres. The reason I am able to start pointe after not doing ballet for 3 years is because the pointe classes itself focus more on building more ankle strength so while I do own my first pair of pointe shoes I only wore them for small exercises and took them off for the harder exercises that could’ve been dangerous for me. I still have the flexibility in my feet from all those years of dance I did though and I was still stretching during the lockdown. I also am old enough, I’m not going to say my exact age on the internet but trust me when I say I’m definitely old enough and have fully developed ankles. I know a lot of people say it’s dangerous to start pointe so early after not doing ballet for years, but I’m taking my baby steps, building that muscle back up, and not pushing myself too hard. My ballet teacher knows what he’s doing he’s a professional who’s been doing ballet his whole life and is making sure I am not pushing myself too hard and makes me take them off when I’m working my feet too hard so I don’t break my ankles

Absolutely!! I have always told parents to start with a pair of demi pointe shoes at age 10 (something for them to look forward to getting and can help them work on technique). [To be clear: demi pointe shoes are NOT meant for going en pointe!*] Then, pointe shoes for their 12th birthday. So glad to hear others advocating this too. I honestly get quite discouraged when I see parent-led social media accounts/pages that show their 9yr old en pointe 😓💔

I'm actually teaching myself ballet, I've been watching your videos a lot to learn a bunch about ballet, I've also watched ThePointeShop to see where to get good point shoes and to make sure there the right ones, and I was looking to see if I'm ready for point shoes because I've been practiceing ballet for about a year. And I aced the test!

      I completely agree with you!
I danced ballet for several years when I was in my teens and twenties, and went en pointe in my early twenties. I have very flat arches and rather stiff feet, although after pretty hard work, my feet became much more pliable and easier to get over my boxes.
Trouble was, we didn't have so many different brands, types, and fits that we have today, and I got very discouraged and stopped dancing altogether.
These days, I am taking video classes on RUclips, and enjoying myself very much!!
I will be taking classes soon, so that I can adjust my technique and maybe, just maybe, consider pointe classes.

I'm a 15 year old and I've never done any ballet in my entire life. However, I've been doing ballet workouts for a stronger core, stronger legs, stronger arms, stronger feet, a flexible back and I've been stretching a lot to increase my flexibility. The reason i started working on those things is because i wanna start doing ballet so badd. But were not financially stable at all and ballet classes are so expensive so my mom refused to let me try out ballet. All the workouts I've been doing really paid off because when i can do all of those exercises. I know I'll have to train a lot more if i ever wanna go on pointe, since I've never even done a ballet class before. But this proved that im really improving and motivated me a lot to continue working on my body. If i ever have the chance to do ballet, I'll take it no matter what

Girls watching this, I know you're excited about pointe but if you're younger don't rush. The reason you get taller and the reason your feet get bigger the older you get is because at your age your bones are not yet fully fused. Long bones like those in your arms and legs are for you actually three separate bones those being the two ends (proximal and distal epiphysis) and the shaft (diaphysis). As you grow those shafts are getting longer and once you've reached your adult height and size the shafts and the two ends will start to fuse together. The last bone to fuse is your collar bone (clavicle) which won't finish developing until you're in your mid twenties. The bones in your feet (tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges) fortunately fuse earlier so you won't have to wait too long. But your tarsals (the little round or square looking bones close to your ankle) need to be formed and it's best for your future dance careers if your metatarsals (the long bones inside your foot before your toes) and the phalanges (your toes) are at least trending towards becoming one bone each (epiphyseal union). The ends of your metatarsals will all be present when you're about 8 but they won't be completely fused and together until you're 14. The bones of your feet provide attachment points for muscles and tendons and so it's important for your instructor to protect your feet. They're not delaying you because they're mean or strict but because they want to make sure that you will get to stay in pointe for a long time. I know how old twelve feels to some of you, but don't rush. Do your exercises so when the time comes you'll be ready, but you can't rush bone development.

@@AngelNierop It’s hard to say without knowing you, but generally speaking children’s growth plates are not closed at age 10 making your body more susceptible to injury in general + the added stress of pointe means more risk. I’d make sure you are doing strength training for sure as well as keep working on ballet technique.
