My local Dave and Busters had the giant three screen version with the gated shifter. During the early 2000s this quickly became my favorite arcade racing game, mostly because of how realistic it looked and felt for the time. I miss when arcades were more popular and Sega still made classics like this.
I became addicted to this game, at our local Dave and Busters. Thank you for the Memories! I only chose Sugo Japan road race every time even from my very first race and always in full race mode. Earning extra laps was a first achievement and I think it was 26 shifts (up & down) per lap. Earning 1st place and writing in my initials was the bigger challenge. There was one other person who occasionally knocked me off the top spot so naturally I had to find more speed and fix that! This went on for over 1 year! Back and forth, find more speed to reclaim my top spot! I am pretty sure I was the last winner between the two of us, and we were never at the game at the same time! 10 years later we met by chance. I was at a local machine show and had a conversation with a technician and the subject of Dave & Busters came up and the F355 game when I said “yeah I had first place”. The gentleman held out his right hand for a handshake and said: “So did I”!
Me and my dad used to play this in the Philippines. Man, arcades we’re still popular at that time and that Daytona, Ferrari F355 Challenge, Initial D, and Maximum Tune were the peak of 2000s arcades. Too bad they’re no more and now claw machines and kiddie carnival games have replaced them.
F355 Challenge is an arcade racing game developed by Sega AM2 for Sega NAOMI Multiboard hardware. It is the brainchild of AM2 head and Ferrari enthusiast Yu Suzuki, and was originally released in 1999. Like previous Sega AM2 racing games, F355 Challenge is based on a real event endorsed and run by supercar manufacturer, Ferrari - the "Ferrari Challenge". Here, Ferrari owners come together and race across various race tracks across North America. At the time, they were likely running an "F355 Challenge" for the Ferrari F355 as the car was still current, however this changes year-on-year.
So many memories 😮 I often traveled to Finland with my father in the early 2000s by ferry and this game was there on the lobby. Almost every young boy on the ship were near this arcade machine. I waited in line for hours to play it. I remember the beginning so well, when the red ferrari turned through the brick building.
Man this game brings back such old memories. My local cinemark theater used to have an arcade a few years back and had This game with the cabinet. I remember begging my parents to lend me a few quarters just to play this since it looked so cool. And even though I wasn’t great at playing the game, it was an exhilarating experience. Fast forward to today, and they took out the arcade, thus my memories along with it. Man, it would be great to find and arcade with this game again, since they are now hard to finf
Not sure where in the world you're located, but Cactus Jack's in Oklahoma City, USA still has one. Wasn't in the best of shape when I played it though :(
I love this game so much, I learned how to drive stick shift with the gated shifter when I was 15 years old. No other arcade game was like it at the time. If I could own one vintage arcade game it would be this one.
Played it in the arcade with the 3 screens at SEGA City......absolutely amazing machine. Then a little over a year later..... it came home and I got to play it when ever I wanted. This is still THE best racing game ever made. This game nailed things that still arent in new games like Forza or GT7. I still play the living shit out of this today.
Oh my god this game makes me so sad… I remember there was camping i used to go with my parents when i was younger, and they had a Daytona USA arcade machine. Then the last year we visited that place, they replaced it with this arcade machine. I only managed to play it two times (lack of pocket money, i was just a child after all lol) but i loved it. Fast forward a few years later to the present, and me and my dad went over to that camping for a memory trip. But… the arcade machine was gone! They didn’t even bring in a new one. Which makes me sad. Especially as this game just felt so groundbreaking to play.
I remember playing a cockpit F355 Challenge along with San Francisco Rush and Cruis’n Exotica at an arcade at Rivercenter mall in San Antonio in the Mid 00s which might have been called the Cyber Zone. SF Rush was my favorite but F355 was chilling it felt like you were actually driving one.
I remember playing this when it first came out, crashed into a wall and the hard vibration of the steering wheel scared the hell of me. Got much better when I picked it up on Dreamcast. Also pretty sure that's Genki Hitomi of Vow Vow fame on the vocals.
I remember playing this in an arcade years ago. It was the first time I've seen an arcade cabinet with a six speed shifter and clutch pedal. Unfortunately at the time, I haven't learned how to drive a manual transmission yet so I did poorly. I wish I could try again now that I know how to drive an actual manual transmission.
Thanks for uploading. 💪🏼 I didn't play this since the early 2000s but loved it back then in Arcade and Dreamcast. I think, this is the first real simulation racer on consoles. Will give it a new try with an Emulator when I have my new Alienware.
I worked at an arcade at the time that had this deluxe 3-screen cabinet, but I don't remember this obnoxious music at all. I wonder if my boss turned it off in the settings. If so, good on him. Good lord
It's an under-rated game. Switch off the driving aids for a real test of skill. The screaming V8 race sound and realistic handling really make it an immersive experience. Gran Turismo through the years was good but compared to this, it felt like a game. I think the only game that feels like a replacement to F355 Challenge is Assetto Corsa on the PC when in sim mode.

Arcades aren’t arcades anymore… It breaks my heart
I have to admit the early 2000s arcade has a variety of old and new arcade games unlike today.

Used to play this in a mall in Abu Dhabi (2003 vacation)
I recollect the intro music being different, after the coin insertion.

@@vacuumman3729 don’t worry I’m in the USA, but maybe I can check that out :)
Im sure theres some way to play this in MAME on PC with a wheel and pedals
@@eternalreturnal yeah there’s gotta be an emulator with a mod out there for steering wheels and shifters. That would be a blast

Maybe you should start saving up for a real F355 now, nobody can tell you that it's too late to start living your childhood dream.

I love the fact that when you insert the coin into the arcade machine of this game, if feels like you're turning on the Ferrari F355 engine.

What's the song from the menu?
My small local cinema had this arcade and my big brother would just hit me on the head randomly when I sat on the arcade 💀
Yes, omg those graphics, i only played the intro, the gamepkay was never for me
