THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO ON RUclips FOR GOLF! I just paid $250 for some online stuff, which is good, but without this, it would be useless. I practiced with a racket, and then 9 iron, back and forth... 60 shots at the range today, couldn't get it..BUT, shots 60-85 were launching, and straight! I maybe compress a golf ball perfectly 1 / 100. 85% of my shots on the course today were hit as good as I've ever hit them. 25 years of crap golf, and I feel like I can easily shoot below 90 now. Might be the first round of golf that I've actually enjoyed! Thank you!!
I have really been struggling with my irons - hitting a fade and losing distance. I knew it was in my wrist hinge on back swing. This gave me a great visualisation of what to do to close the club face more consistently. Tried this today at the driving range. Ended up hitting a draw and adding c30-40 yds to a 7 iron c165 to 170 with a much easier swing. Thanks Ali.
Wow! I hit balls in my backyard a lot, just whiffle balls with a lobb wedge. My miss generally like a push, but often I'll hook it. I've been working on trying to close it on the way down. I have been finding it difficult to rotate my hand slightly on the down swing without losing the Slightly bowed wrist. I just went out and used your pointer And it seems to be working out way better than my previous attempts or swing thought. Ball is flying straighter and higher. thanks.
I had a few good lessons with Ali, and worked on low point, but found out myself, that you can't get tge low point ahead if the bull is too far up in your stance, it's very easy when you move it back a little, which changed my consistency 👍🏻
awesome tip - I am struggling on 18 and rarely put a score in to match this. I have been struggling with backswing as I have been to vertical. I have understood this and seen an improvement by rotating over my shoulder than above my head! Looking forward to trying this next round.
Thanks for the tip-it was something I used to do and now remember why my irons were so powerful and accurate in the past. Please advise if my thinking the same hand position will aid in driver distance .
Having a similar problems with lofty shots and no distance. Pro said my launch angle too low but didn't talk about address. Ali explains club face/impact angle and demonstrates, with clarity, how to make adjustments. Going to the range today to try it out.
To all the skeptics watching this: this is your solution to adding distance. You can take a lesson for $150 an hour if you want, or you can just do this for free. You will get the same advice, and you will get the same results!!
This definitely works. I have practiced this on the driving range and took it to the course yesterday! Awesome results - thank you, Ali! I do, however, have a harder time doing this with my driver. Should I only use the technique with ny irons?
I have had the same issue and this was a really good explanation of the fault, the one thing I think you could have highlighted more is body rotation, without more rotation the ball is likely to go left
You nailed my swing fault. I’ll work on getting the club face facing backwards. I play a lot of tennis and I crush my forehand with the same thought. Thanks
You ok with the wrist twist ( motorcycle throttle) happening on the way back ( from square at address) or do you feel the best results happen with the wrist bow at transition?
I have realized that I have developed a two hinge swing. Namely that my swing with my shoulders and my elbows hinging but not my wrists and I am losing yardage, hitting spinny shots and losing it right all too frequently. I think this might be the ticket to my problems. Definitely going to be conscious of these suggestions next time I hit the range. Many thanks for the ideas!
I literally just came to this realization earlier today while taking few swings and seeing how my wrist flexion in the backswing changes the face at impact. I've struggled with distance, creating lag in the downswing, and pushing the ball right. This video couldn't have come at a better time, thanks!
Ali if you get the shaft lean and the ball is going more to the left for a right handed golfer is that shaft lean without turn or why is it going to far left thanks love this video
Novice here. Was the main the club face direction in the downswing? Looking at the tennis racquet example, it appears that your left wrist was bowed to create that face direction. Am I missing the point and fix? I got the same problem with only hitting 8i and even 7i about 125-130 yds.
Thanks Ali for another informative video. I'm 75 and can still get 220 yards off the tee, but usually with a slight fade. Been working on trying to draw the ball for years and I'm about ready to just stay with the fade. Do you think that this tip would help to close the face more than my normal face rotation at impact? I swing inside to out on a circular path but my driver face is always open slightly causing a 5-10 yard fade. Thanks.
I have a natural fade too which is generally fine but some holes require a draw shot shape. I change my set up. Drop rear foot back 6 inch, slightly firmer grip, ball back half inch and start path further right. If ball too far forward I hook so I suggest you try at range to tune set up. Hope this helps.
I’m not a expert by any mean, but my 7iron carry 175-180 yard without cutting the loft like that. I was previously a little bit more one the leaning forward impact position i was having a lot a trouble with getting it too thick with high divot. Getting back too having more loft and a straighter impact position help me to get the same (if not more) spin, with a more forgiving angle of attack. Might have loose a bit of distance, bit i’m using my club as they are intended, not making a 7iron loft like a 5 iron with less club speed
So you make a conscious decision cock your wrist at the beginning of your downswing? I am little confused as to how one gets to that point. I see how it is beneficial, but don't see how to get to the cock wrist point without making a conscious swing decision mid swing. Any thoughts would be welcome.
I got my ball speed to 164 with a driver today on the simulator and I'm over 50. All because I twist my grip as the club goes back in the backswing, which is what he's talking about. My previous best was 160 ball speed and usually 150 was about my best without doing this.
Anyone tried having the ball further back in the stance ? I'm sure its helped me a lot with forward shaft lean at impact, helping to compress the ball better . I game hybrid irons and my 7 iron launches at about 20 degrees, which seems a bit high watching this. Anyone else playing hybrid irons and getting higher launch angles?
I used to duff behind the ball all the time. And I figured, if Im hitting so far behind the ball, why not put the ball farther back in my stance? lol its been working so far
Hybrid irons are made to launch the ball higher, not really for people who need to compress the ball like this. The idea of the hybrid shape is to put more weight behind the head to help the ball go higher and farther without the compression that this video is talking about.
Great video. This is exactly the issue I have. I just can’t get the distance out of my clubs I should have for my swing speed. One question… is this just for irons or would this work for hybrids and woods?
In a previous Video Ali suggested shaft lean which opens the face slightly then close the face slightly and re grip to square the face this has worked for me a lot easier than moving the wrists hitting the ball way better thanks to Ali advice
When my swing is off or whatever may be, I’ll do as you mentioned BUT it’s just to limp me through the hole or series of holes or maybe the rest of the round…but then it’s back to the range to properly fix the issue. By doing this at set up as a norm, you’ll begin hitting crazy duck hooks b/c we tend to swing faster and harder a couple holes in to our round. What is being taught in this video is a permanent fix, not a crutch that will soon be as detrimental as the initial problem. You want to groove a good repeatable swing, not continue to change to suit the immediate needs…you’ll always be struggling and never see and maintain improvements.
I hit my irons straight but no distance. Like my 7 iron usually 111 to 115 yards. I feel I follow your instructions just can’t get any distance. I’m 67 and feel I should do better
I used to play golf at a level I was confident in and content with, but I’ve been brutal on the course these last couple years. My game has regressed badly since taking about two years off from playing. It’s horrifying. Im sure gaining about 30 pounds of lard on my fat ass doesn’t help, but just can’t get into a position at the very top so I can get my hands ahead of the club head on downswing. Losing tremendous club head speed. Any recommendations? Lol
Why not just swing normally and cut down a 2 iron - AW set to get more control, vs doing all this work and change your swing to lean a standard 5 iron - LW set more forward?
I’m not a pro by any means but if you want distance the club should be behind your hands or the shaft shouldn’t form a straight line with your arms until after contact. Which ever description helps you. Because once the shaft catches up to your hands you begin losing club head speed. It’s kinda like throwing a punch. If you’re just punching someone’s face your not doing much damage, you need to punch through the face. Just trying to give you multiple examples incase one or two don’t make sense.
What I don't understand is..? if you hit your 7 iron 128yds & you then add forward shaft lean & now get 151. The question..! If the distance to target is 151yds, why not use a 5 iron. I carry my 7 iron 125yds with no forward lean (and dead straight) why would I even try to hit a club that was not designed (the loft) to hit same distance as 2 clubs higher. Doesn't make sense..?

THAT was one of the best explanations EVER. So applicable to me. Thank you so much.
I’ve playing for 30 plus yrs.
Took me over 20yrs to find out what I was doing wrong.
This video is PRICELESS..
Glad it helps Alex

Nice version of the twist the grip method, which I think is the key to ball striking.
Thanks for the tip-it was something I used to do and now remember why my irons were so powerful and accurate in the past.

I agree, he should have mentioned how important having the correct hip rotation is...as I struggle with this myself...
He probably thought “One swing change at a time.” So as not to confuse.
You nailed my swing fault. I’ll work on getting the club face facing backwards. I play a lot of tennis and I crush my forehand with the same thought. Thanks
Great vid Ali...Big thanks for this one.!
Wow! Great video Ali. Tanks
Glad you enjoyed it
This video might as well been about me. Great lesson.
You ok with the wrist twist ( motorcycle throttle) happening on the way back ( from square at address) or do you feel the best results happen with the wrist bow at transition?
Wondering the same thing

Does this work for driver as well please..?
Great video Ali, but the start is a bit strange? I like your video based on a shaft forward and square club face for a iron, working well for me👍
Tried something different, good to hear
@@AliTaylorGolf nice to try something different, but I agree with Martin. I thought I’d joined the video apart-way through. Great content though.
Does this work the same with the woods?

Do you need a weak grip to do this? I was just trying to it, and felt some strain in my forearm.
I hope this works for seniors lost distance over the years

I have the same question, and I have a harder time replicating this with the driver and fairway woods.
Please answer me....does this apply to a strong grip? So many conflicting answers out there.
Why not close the face at set up rather than having to move the wrist's ?
He would have missed left and the wrist change shallows the club in the downswing.
In a previous Video Ali suggested shaft lean which opens the face slightly then close the face slightly and re grip to square the face this has worked for me a lot easier than moving the wrists hitting the ball way better thanks to Ali advice

A closed face in a miss hit is usually a chunk or low left at best
How often should we change grips
Once a year according to my fitter
By lowering the launch angle and swinging slower the spin must have dropped a ton too. And that means less stopping power into greens.
Angle of attack went down so kept spin loft decent
I hit my irons straight but no distance. Like my 7 iron usually 111 to 115 yards. I feel I follow your instructions just can’t get any distance. I’m 67 and feel I should do better
it would be very helpful if you could make the proper golf swing in slow motion
Close the face at set up and you will normally pull everything.
How an 18 handicap got 30 more yards out of his 7 iron. He grabbed a 5 instead.
🙄
Surely that would only be 20 yards 😂😂
I used to play golf at a level I was confident in and content with, but I’ve been brutal on the course these last couple years. Talk about a confusing video ???
This video is the reason I would never take lessons. Would ruin my game.
Maybe not the video for you, shame you don't want to let a coach help you get better.
You're merely delofting the club; a technique that has been used for decades. Nothing new here.
And yet so many golfers still don't know and understand how to do it.
Yes, but many golfers forget to set their strike correctly.
I turn my club upside down and it works incredibly well.
Tl;Dr hood it lulz
What I don't understand is..? if you hit your 7 iron 128yds & you then add forward shaft lean & now get 151. The question..! If the distance to target is 151yds, why not use a 5 iron. I carry my 7 iron 125yds with no forward lean (and dead straight) why would I even try to hit a club that was not designed (the loft) to hit same distance as 2 clubs higher. Doesn't make sense..?
The less loft will also create better low point control and more speed. Help you hit all clubs longer.
@@AliTaylorGolf Thanks
