This is my idea of heaven . I used to live in old cottage I enjoyed every minute of it I used to have to get water from the well this is my way favourite way of living . 😊
To live in an old stone cottage in Mayo where my grandmother grew up (before she moved to America) is such a dream. The Ox mountains are starkly beautiful. It’s so wonderful to see your love of not only old buildings but the old ways of living. I wish I had the money to buy a place like this as I have dual Irish citizenship.
Hello from Montreal, Canada🙂Love love love this video😍😍And I absolutely share your enthusiasm for the small bed space near the fireplace!!! I did not know about that and I would do like you, I would have one space like that if I were to buy a house in Ireland. Looking forward to other videos!
Well said .. Very well said. I live in Mayo on a very small offshore island. Loveliest part of Ireland. Had a cottage in Leitrim once a few stages on from the one you feature and a keen hobby as I am high risk covid and old now is looking at houses in Mayo online and I see several with the wall beds! Would LOVE that.
Oh Maggie, you are such a joy to watch. The love you have for the topic is evident...and I'm grateful to have found somewhere I can enthuse myself and keep to my goal. We live in Australia but but my partner (and our children) have Irish citizenship thru descent. We are madly saving our Australian dollars with hope to convert them to euros and make the move - we've never seen snow!! I adore your videos and look forward to the next! 💫
If I had the money. I would love to return back to Ireland with my pets and live in the old cottage it is what I have dreamt of for a long time and my idea of heaven on earth love the isolation of the place and the area is perfect for me. Wish I had the money but I am self employed and on extremely low income if this was not issue I buy this place today and move straight over perfect eco site. Love it xx

Such a beautiful place beautiful scenery good decent fresh air peace and quiet land to farm etc that little cottage would be great restored love the place great people and the best accent around Would love love that place was born and raised rurally from a farming background would love to get back full time to the rural farming life can't beat it unfortunately made the mistake of moving to a city I'm 💯% not a fan of city living. Anyway loved the video will definitely watch more Stay safe and well Godbless to you, myself and all the other good decent people
Pity you don't get into the house's and film. These videos could be fantastic if you could show people around via the camera.. you've a great personality and a trusting face. Maybe the seller will throw you a few bob, if your video helped sell the property.
I've been looking at places online for a very long time. I'm sure I looked at a place like this in Mayo, a few years ago. I live in an off-grid narrowboat, so off-grid is what I prefer! The property I saw did look like it had a stream by it. And it was also in the shadow of a mountain. Living off-grid you really want to be on the sunny side of the valley, for obvious reasons. I've seen a few of those nook beds too. ☺️👌 If I found an old chimney I'd put a stainless liner in it and fit a stove. Old chimneys can be porous and leak carbon monoxide and weep tar from the soot. Stoves only use about a quarter the fuel of an open fire too. Also, my dad came from a mountain farm. Before the council put water on his allotments, he just dug his own well for his plants. Honestly, we have no idea the skills our old folk had but we forgot.
I love stone houses and traditional architecture in general. I will never understand people who don't realize that a well-built house has a soul. I've been wondering why traditional Irish cottages and houses don't have turf roofs like in the Hebrides or other similar climates like the Faroes or Iceland. Is it limited by environmental factors or is it more of an aesthetic choice? That being said, I think this house would look lovely with a well-built grass roof. Oh and please do go on about those little things, it's very interesting and we learn a lot from it :)
just found your videos today! Love them! you are inspiring.. can you point to a video that maybe discusses Planning Issues? IE could you move into something like this or would you need planning permission? and how would you sus that out?
I love your outlook and attitude, it's exactly how I've always looked at these houses, but, unfortunately, living in a fairly modern house in an estate in Dublin, I could never get my family to make the transition, thinking of doing it alone now that they have all grown up,
I could never again live in a terraced house, country living has to be the best, fresh air,and peace and quite, well water and healthy living, don,t if only!! Just do it.
Lol. This building is located in an elevated area with poor soils and drainage near the Ox Mountains. Trust me - agriculture there was primarily small-scale livestock, potato and sometimes a small acerage of oat or barley cultivation. A granary is one thing that building was most certainly not
This may sawnd funny but can you get a stone cottage with running worter and Lecky with old open fire playses about harth an Acer in the back or front of the cottage for about £ 8000 to £10000 freehold
Given the embodied carbon in a new-built home (especially a masonry one), bringing an already-built house back into use even at a low spec gives a sustainability plus that can't be sniffed at. If we make the electricity supply renewable, then even heating a less-efficient house with electricity isn't a bad prospect for the planet, as well as the buyer's pocket, so that (with a more resilient rural grid!) is really what we need to be agitating for, for everyone. It will be much more effective in the long run than all the individual efforts we make (not saying those shouldn't be made, but greening the supply is the biggie).
The work and skill is locked in the walls off the old building with a good roof and hemp insulation internally double glazing under floor central heating so what if some one disapproves it . If it suites your pocket to heal what others say or think it’s your life at the end off the day
These are not houses but decaying ruins that need more money to repair always having a ruin patched house, better would be to buy the land and build a new healthy house
@@sarahpengelly8439 ahahha this is funny I did a 4 years of chemistry in school. The co2 one molecule of carbon and two molecules of oxygen in the case it will goes to the ceiling when they will try to heat up houses after having given him a coat of paints.
Each to their own. . Thats not what is being promoted here. Saving the historical beauty, the legacy, and authenticity is paramount. Either you love old houses with character or you don't. My second great grandfather's house still stands one of the inner rooms is a log cabin hidden in the walls. I could never dream of demolishing it even though its creaky and leans.
@@vannjunkin8041 Hey dude I live in a country that is a museum, I know very well what is the artistic and historical value of a building . Four stones joined with mortar and a roof rotted wooden boards do not make it the Pantheon.

Yes, a new healthy house that takes lots of natural resources to build. Maybe you did not read the previous comments about carbon footprint?

Pretty sure the point is to save their historic places and embrace their Heritage along with saving a shit ton of money. But hey....what do I know?
