I am in Pennsylvania USA. I live in an old farmhouse built in 1850 on 3 acres of land with a small stream running through it. This used to be an 8-acre mini farm, but years ago, previous owners sold off acreage on both sides where newer homes have been built. I'm city born and raised but I love the country life. I really wish this was still an 8-acre property. I'm 61. I would love to have even more land, but I am getting too old to keep up with so much land. Thank you for this beautiful video.
Great video. I grew up in Ireland in the 1960s and remember a lot of little farm and labourer cottages where people died or that were abandoned when people left mainly for England over the decades and couldn't sell or even give them away. If Daniel can bring life back to even some of these, that would be excellent.
I've a cousin who lives in Mohill and my mother came from Carrick on Shannon (the Shannon forms the border between Roscommon and Leitrim) so this was very interesting for me. The area could do with some young people with an interest in the land. It was very pleasing to know you'd bought a ruin and renovated it.
Buddy you need your own TV show. I could watch your material all day. This is fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to put this out to the world. I'm watching from Florida. While we do have some nice scenery down here, nothing here can compare to the Irish countryside.
Only seeing this now. Looks beautiful, not far from us up the road from Mohill. We only have an acre but are putting in native & fruit trees. Thanks for the explanation of the reeds & cows. We’ve had a couple of cow invasions & reeds started growing after. We stopped cutting the grass, except once a year, & have had ground nesting birds - last year a quail nested in the long grass. Wonderful birdsong all day, beautiful insect life, bees, butterflies, dragonflies & intriguing moths at night. Lovely, lovely Leitrim.
Omg I would love that property. I would love to escape this prison island Australia. My partner and I have just built a new house on 7 acres to start our permaculture garden and acreage. Life in Australia is becoming very difficult very quickly.
Hello from rural Monaghan Ireland. Things seem really bizarre over there by all reports. I seen video after video on FB of what's going on and hard to believe. Australia was always regarded as home away from home for the Irish but god tables are turning. It's scary what's being forced upon ye. Stay safe.
@@Mittibh it is a beautiful country scenically. Real estate here has also become only for mega rich. We were lucky to get our land a few years ago for a good price, but could never afford it now. We are lucky that our population is low compared to land size, but in saying that, most of the land around the middle is inhabitable. Most of the population is on the east coast and around the bottom in Victoria.
So life has a way of giving parallels. I find out I have a cousin in county Leitrim and my great grandmother was born in the outskirts of Mohill. Then this video shows up on my feed. What a beautiful property.

Today, I switched on the computer and turned to 'photo of the day' as I always do. The photo was of a beautiful landscape and I said to my son that it reminded me of where I grew up in Wales, before the countryside there deteriorated. I looked up the place in the photo and was directed to your video. I am getting a real appreciation for Ireland, although I have never been there. I think I was first drawn to Ireland by watching numerous UrbEx videos, where (as in Scotland and other countries) lots of abandoned rural properties have fallen into disrepair. I love these small holdings/ steadings and see so much potential in them Thank you for creating this series, it is fascinating to me.
You're great and that's good. What's bad is advertising cottages like this....which get mostly bought out by people who want second homes, holiday homes, which inadvertently raise the prices of properties. Gentrification in other words. In areas across Ireland it's now difficult for someone to build or buy as prices have escalated beyond means of the average person.
Absolutely loved this, it's the first video I've watched of you and you had me so hooked....the possibilities are endless with this amazing property!! You've got yourself another fan x

Planner here: Just an important point in buying a property like this for living in. You need to confirm that there is a clear record that it has been used as a dwelling within the past five years (electricity bills, postal records, etc). This is crucial to ensure it is considered a 'habitable 'dwelling' which will make it much easier for planning permission for restoration/expansion. Having said that, this landholding is large enough that you should be able to get permission anyway as a small farmer. I'd also check on local 4G and internet connectivity, it can make a big difference.
@@MossyBottom I'd just add a few points in no particular order: 1. Always check the 'rural housing' and 'rural industry' sections of the County Development Plan to see what policies are relevant to what you want to do. Most councils are very supportive of genuine local small scale businesses and small holdings, but may be suspicious (sometimes people claim to be small holders when they really just want permission for their McMansion in the countryside). Also, check and see if there are specific designations associated with your area. Also, check online flood maps (from the OPW). 2. Never buy a house as a dwelling unless the seller can provide proof of occupation in the past 5 years. 3. In general, outbuildings associated with small holdings are exempt from any planning requirements. Ask the Council for advice. 4. Remember that in Ireland, there is a third party right to appeal - even if the Council says 'yes', a disgruntled local could appeal it. 5. Never say 'AirBnB' in an application as this is legally ambiguous and may have tax implications. Just state if its to be used for guests or short term lets or some other use (such as retreats, etc). 6. You should note that sometimes Councils attach occupancy conditions, even if its for the extension of an existing house. A typical one may state that you must reside in the house (i.e. not rent it out) or sell it for 7 years. They may also attach conditions on requiring improvements to a highway access or to wastewater treatment, even if its not directly associated with the application. 7. Always check and see if you are in, or near, a European designated habitat (SAC or SPA). This could have implications for what you intend to do, including forestry or agricultural works. 8. Never take planning advice from a selling agent, a builder, or a politician.
@@lizmcauley7169 Just to clarify - 5 years is not stated anywhere in the regulations or legislation - its a sort of rule of thumb established by the courts over a few decades of decisions. It’s not a strict rule, just something to keep an eye on.
Bravo on finding the perfect (second) application of your skills and knowledge of Irish rural life. The aspects of the property you addressed were outstanding in practicality. Just what a serious potential buyer would want to know. This is a new direction for your channel yet totally expressive of you. If you bring a buyer to the owner, you should get some compensation.
This was a fun alternative to the farm updates. That really is an amazing property! While I don't know a lot about it, I would consider turning an acre or two of woodland into a permaculture food forest.
Mate, you are amazing at what you do. This is a peach of an idea to feature Irish properties with various potentials. So beautiful and thought provoking and, I have to say, frustrating as I would love to live and work in a place like this. So bloody cheap compared to Australia where I am. Thanks for these remarkable videos. (Those last few edits/out-takes were hilarious)
It's not cheap to renovate these old properties correctly, using the correct materials so that you aren't just creating loads of problems. Any building without a concrete floor would require underpinning to have a concrete foundation poured, definitely not cheap. Cheap land in Ireland is cheap for a reason - either it's not suitable for growing crops on, or it's in a location where there is no infrastructure (like broadband), or the renovations required to bring a house up to habitable standard would cost a few hundred thousand euro. Planning permission in Ireland isn't straightforward either, people qualified in planning are required to submit applications and drawings, and to comply with all the regulations for a valid planning application. I'm Irish and have first hand experience of old houses.
Somebody needs to hire this guy! I think this is a new business model. He brings his good looks and speaking ability to make videos for people looking for these kinds of places and the owners who want to sell them. Wow! Well done Mossy Bottom!
The reason everything is so green is because it Rains Almost Every day there. When it’s not raining it Drizzling. Most people who live in Great Britain are depressed because of the crappy weather there
You could always graze geese in those wet pastures especially near the lake. They are light and would eat the grass and fertilize at the same time. They could utilize the lake to drink, bathe in, and escape predators. Then you could sell them for Christmas dinner.

What a gift you are making to everyone. I love the gentle unselfish way you approach this. It is so PRACTICAL, so often when people talk the dream they forget to mention all those negatives, and mostly forget to say how many skills you need to acquire and just how much very hard work it is. The other thing people don't talk so much about is how much money you need available to become self sufficient. What a blessing you are.

I love your videos and am interested to see the rest (an Irish guy living in Germany, so this is a taste of home). However the only worry I have here is (and call me pessimistic) that these detailed videos of places to buy could attract the wrong type of buyers to those areas, e.g property developers and people who, rather than live a self-sufficient lifestyle like yourself, would instead buy the land/property and turn them into Tourist rentals/ AirBnBs etc...and change the unique character of the area. What are your thoughts on that?

While I enjoy my home and the county I live in; when I was in my 20’s and 30’s, living on a piece of property like this and creating a homestead was a huge dream of mine. What a wonderful lifestyle. Keep the videos coming, you are helping me relive my dreams! 🌿 And yes, something to wake up to!

Totally agree!
Daniel, I hope you become an Irish citizen🇮🇪❤️
Your dog has a happy life. He loves to explore with you. 💚💚
Stay safe.
Well we have medical apartheid here. You can't run from it.
@Colin h lol yes it’s probably much better where you are.

Greetings from Suffolk Virginia in the USA. This place is so beautiful it's so green.

I've been looking (on line) at Irish cottages with land. Some are astonishingly cheap, compared with UK prices. What a wonderful find!
You will not find places like this in UK that are affordable! I am from UK but I purchased a renovated 3 bed cottage on 7 acres in leitrim 5 years ago for €125 👍 best move ever. These places are getting fewer and fewer, don't wait too long if you are going to make the jump 👍
@@scoyle1750 wow, you have a major chip on your shoulder! I am not taking Ireland away from Irish people ! I have every right to be in this country and I pay tax in this country ! They want nice new builds or to live in big towns and cities with amenities- or maybe you are not aware that rural Ireland is in decline!? I'm retired and on Airbnb, I'd love to start over there. Your a good judge of property character to be giving a heads up about places.
An Irish farmer told me the ideal is to have a bit of bog, a bit of wood, and a bit of tillage.

My partner (28) and I (25) are looking for a smallholding/small farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland to grow organically both for ourselves and to supplement my floral (side) business. But close to Aberdeen so we can still retain our corporate jobs as we're too nervous to take the full leap! This was so interesting, especially as we look for a place to call our own.
You need to get a series on RTÉ or Virgin, way way better than most of the presenters.
You’d be perfect for Nationwide, or one of the many shows they produce.
Solid evaluation for anyone who’d consider a move to Ireland. Well done.

This country is so incredibly beautiful! Leaves me speachless everytime. I've been actually looking into properties in Ireland for a past couple of weeks and if I could I would move there in a heartbeat.
This property seemed like an absolute dream even though it would require a lot of work and time, but it would be definitely worth it and the future owner will be an incredibly lucky person :) I had a chuckle when you said that you wouldn't mind getting cut off from the rest of the civilization during the winter months, because I was actually thinking the same thing.
If only I could. What a dream place!
Absolutely loved this, it's the first video I've watched of you and you had me so hooked....the possibilities are endless with this amazing property!! You've got yourself another fan x
Absolutely love this new aspect of your videos. You can read the descriptions in the sale ads all day but they don't give the desired details you did. I hope you make this a permanent segment of your videos.

Thanks for that Philip. It's very interesting to get the view of a planner.
@@MossyBottom I'd just add a few points in no particular order:
Oh to be young again!! You would make a great dad- singing lullabies to your little one.

You could always graze geese in those wet pastures especially near the lake. They are light and would eat the grass and fertilize at the same time. They could utilize the lake to drink, bathe in, and escape predators. Then you could sell them for Christmas dinner.

I am sitting out this long long long hard lockdown here in Melbourne, Australia, remembering my life living in a rural nature conservation area for years. Looking at your wonderful new series reminds me so much of the dreams, the reality we experienced. You have thrown 5 years of experience, and thought into this video.
