    Hello and thanks for tuning in to SUMO PRIME TIME. It’s Day 15 and the final day of the New Year’s Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. Entering the final day, Yokozuna Terunofuji and Sekiwake Kotonowaka are the co-leaders, each with 12 wins and 2 losses, while Ozeki Kirishima is hoping to score a come-from-behind victory at 11 and 3. Each one of these contenders was fighting with so much on the line this time. Terunofuji was hoping to prove that he’s still the king of the ring. It would be his ninth championship and first title since May of last year. Kotonowaka is gunning for his first top division title and rise to Ozeki. The November champ Kirishima is hoping to make Yokozuna by winning back-to-back championships. Fans were kept on the edge of their seats as the championship race went down to the wire, and then some. Find out who walked away with the most coveted Emperor’s Cup in the end.
    Before we go, please don’t forget to join us during the month of February, as we’ll be back to bring you more features and updates to satisfy your sumo appetite. Arigato!!

    What an exciting basho! Terunofuji once again proves he's top dog. Kotonowaka surpasses his father's top rank of sekewaki and will be ranked as an Ozeki for next basho. Let's hope Kotonowaka can match his grandfather's rank and become a Yokozuna someday!

      @stevenicholas5651 9 месяцев назад +20

      @karvakalle Terunofuji at 80% is still better than any rikishi active today... And You know what?. He looked amazing this basho! He completely dominated after his 2nd loss. I think his 1st week he was a little rusty. But he tossed Kirishima out of the dohyo like a rag doll on day 15, and he did it with immense pressure on him, too! I mean Kotonowaka put crazy pressure on him by beating Tobizaru amd forcing Terunofuji into a must win situation. Then he still had to beat Kotonowaka in a playoff. Not to mention he already best Kotonowaka a few days prior and it's so hard to beat the same man 2 times in a basho!
      Imagine if Terunofuji didn't have the MAJOR knee injuries he has! He would probably have 20 yushos... Kotonowaka looked amazing this basho and he absolutely has nothing to feel bad about. He gave Terunofuji a real hard fight in the playoff and took him out off the dohyo with him...

      Teru is a 100%. Not 80%. His legs are in great shape. And whatever he has wrapped in there has supported his legs pretty good. So, congratulations to him , he was strong and big and he won with experience. Had a very serious approach to sumo. He wins again and will be back next tournament!😊😊

    • @NyangisKhan
      @NyangisKhan 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@luuk341 The thing is that Hoshoryu's 10-4 against Kotonowaka so the chances of him beating Kotonowaka on the final day is pretty high. Also Hoshoryu always tried something new when he fought Terunofuji. And he's also bigger and stronger now so he might come up with something new again and beat Teru.

    • @Tomoesong
      @Tomoesong 9 месяцев назад

      @@luuk341 I think he's talking about possible Hoshoryu vs Koto match. If he didn't pullout he would be the one facing Koto instead of Tobizaru. And Stats are not a guarantee but Hoshoryu dominated Koto between their match numbers. If Hosh didn't get injured and pulled out, there's high chance that there will be not play offs.

    I can't wait to see the banzuke for the next basho! Wakamotoharu will have a much-deserved promotion from Maegashira 1 to Kotonowaka's vacated Sekiwake position with his 10-5 record and Outstanding Performance prize. Both Komusubi and almost all of the top Maegashira struggled in this past tournament, though, and deciding how that will affect the rankings will be a difficult task. I guess they will promote Abi from Maegashira 2 to Komusubi with his 8-7 record. Will Nishikigi go from Maegashira 5 to the other Komusubi position with his 8-7 record? It will be very interesting to find out.

    He wouldn't have come back if he wasn't certain he'd be walking away with the win.
    His two choices were: retire or come back and show them all what a real yokuzuna looks like
    Right now Terunofuji still sits on top of the mountain alone, uncontested. All is right with the world.

      > He wouldn't have come back if he wasn't certain he'd be walking away with the win.
      People said that last time and he was out after 4 days. He was always 1 bad day away from that. But he did it, and 1 yusho more to achieve his real goal.

    Terunofuji has to man the top of the mountain by himself for a little while longer, but it shouldn't be too much longer. Kirishima will likely win another basho soon, and we have Hoshoryu and the soon to be Kotozakura just behind him. Not to mention the cadre of capable youngsters making their presences felt. Let's go for #10, Teru!

    Will Kotonowaka now change his name as his grandfather gave permission provided he reached Ozeki?
