As an elderly millennial (I'm in my 30s lol), I'd say generally younger folks use it more but it's very much a thing so Abbott didn't start it but I would say it became more popular in the last few years thanks to online usage in the same way that other common AAVE sayings did. Also, I like to think since Gregory had that moment with his father where he really shared how he's grown to love teaching, got praise for his clandestine gardening, and worked together over the summer, they've been in a more comfortable relationship.
