Speaking as a man of color myself, I adored this movie when I first saw it.
Its so refreshing to see a piece with this combinations of influences. As someone who grew up in California as well as grew up watching anime, it was interesting to see these elements depicted together like that. Its a really interesting film if a bit flawed.
I think the kneejerk propensity to call something cultural appropriation just because its not made by people of the race depicted sets a dangerous precedent. We should be encouraging artists to explore other cultures and source materials, as long as they treat it with respect. And us as viewers need to learn the difference between a bigoted, derisive work created from ignorance, and a genuine work created out of respect for the source material.
i agree although i feel the idea of appropriation should be more of a neutral term since it's only really bad if you're disrespectful in my view.
its interesting because while i havent read it i saw some posts when i was exporting this that said the comic is muchh more in depth on the culture angle and the film kinda boils it down
@@Stevem i agree, appropriation SHOULD be a more middling term.
But in my experience it's almost always used to ill effect. To fuel the mob of social justice against a person or work that ultimately doesn't deserve it. To silence people, works or ideas that they don't personally agree with or like.
It can be used to point out racist propaganda for example, which is great, but it very much is a double edged sword...
@@vamuse on the internet things are all treated in extremes there maybe many people talking about appropriateion in level terms if it be academic or forums, but those conversations probs wont get the attention of a more explosive encounter
@@Stevem that is very true. We see the extremes that the internet can breed. And the concept of appropriation is a tool to be used for either good or bad.
I don't mean to catastrophize, I'm just wary of it's potential unintended effects. I guess I meant it more like how one would be cautious with a power tool. When used properly chainsaws are great... however...
But yes, when done correctly, calling out works that are damaging and hurtful is hugely beneficial
We have so many issues here in America (racism, sex , words ) and I think it makes us sensitive and bias on a lot of subjects like personally I dont believe in zero tolerance on things like racism and culture appropriation in terms of identifying it and attack it immediately . I do think it’s always good to understand and try healing before banishing calling something a phobia then attack said person with a phobia never a good idea
I liked it a lot. I'm a Latino that grew up in Los Angeles, and the depiction was a distillation of it's essence mixed with that ankama magic. I loved it!
More creators should step outside their boundaries and do more of this sort of thing. The amount of effort put into this shows it was done with respect, and that's all anyone really wants.
I like the way you phrased it. MTFZ is just a very well animated B-movie. The story really isn't anything to rave about, yet the animation and art direction are so well crafted, that in the end, it comes out to be an alright movie that's still a fun watch. I will say, I never noticed how much of the backgrounds and other assets were actually 3d. I've never seen Tekkonkinkreet, so MFTZ was my first exposure to how this studio blends the 2d with the 3d in this fashion. Very glad you made a video on this film! Quality content as always, Stevem.
You should definitely check out Tekkon. Its one of my favorites
Finally someone made a vid on this movie. Thank you and love your vids man hella underrated movie❤️❤️
I knew you were going to get to this weird French/Japanese collaboration eventually. I actually dug their caricature of LA and gang culture. This is definitely along the same lines as Tekkonkinkreet and that suits me just fine. Anime that steps outside the normal bounds of a typical production always catches my eye.
I mean, the title itself is a little weird. Doing a story in a location you don't live in and have not much experience about is not a matter of if it is authentic, which it inherently is not, or if it is appropiation specifically with MTFZ, since it is never claimed to be reality (and runs away from reality) and it is clearly just an inspiration/cartoonization for an interesting setting.
It reminds me a little of Disney's Encanto and how its setting its the country Colombia, since the staff spent like 2 weeks as tourist and loved the places.
The story itself is not authentic since the story was made up and charectarized by people with a very general and fairy-talish understanding of the setting, but it also isn't an appropiation, as it is a clear cut inspiration and almost adoration of reality, however cartoonish it may be.
In my opinion, it would become appropiation when people/marketing take the movie too seriously and promote Disney's Colombia as interchangeable with reality's Colombia and monetize/simplify/erase/warp people's perception and expectations of reality unapologetically, almost saying "this is what we'd like this place to be, so it is reality for us".
And that kind of appropiation can be done by people that could very well be native and "authetic" to the setting being told, as they can very easily narrate their perspectives and experiences in a totalitarian and closed narrative while claiming it is complete objective reality and promote it as such.
its a late night on the spot bait title lol , i'd say disney are the kings of appropriation its all they do, but id say the word is neutral, it can be negative or not
@@Stevem Exactly the same happened with Coco, which is funny cause now a lot of people in Mexico cashes on the the movie's popularity. So now you can see "traditional" wooden toys inspired by the movie characters, or Mariachis that would play the songs from the movie as if they where a traditional thing. I'm Mexican but I live in Japan and I've met some people who's main reference about Mexico is that movie, which to be fair is no that bad, but I think that's the equivalent of Otakus or weebs coming to Japan thinking it's gonna be just like in anime.
Mutafukaz is one of the most underrated animated films I've seen. What I think it's lacking in substance, it makes up for in vibe.
After I watched this movie, I felt like I would understand it a bit more if I read the comic book. The ending was really confusing. It didn’t seem like it was setting up a sequel, but rather it was missing something to complete the story itself.
Definitely read the comic books, a whole lot got cut out to fit the general story into the movie.
@@PEPERSTEAK For sure. It's hard to fit 500+ pages of main comic, much less 300+ pages of supplementary spin-offs, into a feature film and still keeping it relatively in-line with the original source. And the comics are getting a sequel starting january 26 so there's even more content to delve into that the movie just wasn't able to do.
Look at this guy taking all of the credit, acting like he wrote and voiced the whole thing. It was obviously the cat, who is exhausted and sleeping in the background from all of the hard work. I'm onto you.
i appropriated the cats work you got me
The scene in MFKZ where the protagonist confronted the gangsta and the shooting sequence began gives me the GTA San Andreas vibe.
As someone who grew up in the “bad” part of LA (before gentrification) they really did capture that in the backgrounds
I have talked to the author over IG nicest dood very cool
oh glad to hear !
Sounds interesting, I'm gonna check it out. This month has been awesome, studio 4C has a lot to offer.
glad youre enjoying it
I love your vids. Thank you for sharing this.
yesss this movie is one of my favorites ever.. and this video came out on my birthday no less I feel so blessed fr
I liked it, but my only complain is that it could have been a bit more wacky and outlandish, it could have used more psychedelic and surreal elements.
yeah it could have done with pushing the boundaries more
This movie was a full on trip
Solid vid essay!
Cultural appropriation didn't even cross my mind watching MTFZ; to me it's a hyperbolic representation of gangs, cops, feds, and mass public shown in media, which is already the worst of the worst. The basis of, "How much paint are you huffing, america?"
Always enlightening seeing other countries take shots at usa, to see through the lens of other's what our actions are saying about us. Cause we aren't the best or brightest, but we certainly act like we are.
Japanese European anime coproductions have been there for a long time. The 1990s Moomins Show, The Yona Yona Penguin Film and The Oban Star Racers Show are all examples of a Japanese European anime coproduction.
I've got so much beef with the term "appropriation" it's not even funny. It's fine for someone to make a piece of entertainment deriative or inspired by a culture they're not a participant of. They're not making a documentary, they're making entertainment. It's extremely limiting to have to make stories based solely on a certain level of "complete" experience. Oftentimes, the term is just used to arbitrarily gatekeep culture or just a politically charged version of "I don't like this thing. Stop it". And at worst, "appropriation" suggests that all minorities of a certain skin colour all act the same.
It reminds me of when Macklemore's entire career got shot down the moment people began accusing him of cultural appropriation. Is making silly rap music a crime or something? Heck, I would love more rap music that isn't tied down by the street perspective! I would love to see more of our culture shared and not have a bunch of my kind of people decrying that someone else is benefitting from it. How is that a bad thing?
I would say that if cultural appropriation isn't used in a context of academic works that really understand the word, than it shouldn't be used.
I think Americans are very confused to the actual meaning of a word, and it's really problematic that they attached it to the cancel culture.
But I dunno, I think there are some instances where we should actually point at it and say: "woooow, that's really not cool". The question is, is it comes from misunderstandings or malevolence, because if yes than why shouldn't we call that out?
@@thisguyfromtherenaissance934 completely agree with this.
You will notice they have a million different excuses for why you're not allowed to do something and the only people who can are already part of the club. It has nothing to do with protecting anyone and everything to do with stopping them from expressing themselves incorrectly
Interesting to see how many collaborations there were with foreign entities
Nice to see a video about this ! For the movie they had to edit a looot from the source material and make it shortee, and I advice to read the comic to have the full story, the sequel of the original serie is comic this year btw.
Say it in theater and was really enjoyed it.
The film was fine in terms of showing respect to the groups it portrayed and is very reminiscent of the early 90s in terms of gang culture.
Sure it was over exaggerated in some parts but in no way offensive.
Plus when it comes to animtion this truly is a unqie concept / location for the medium.
It's a pity the story didn't really land.
I don't know why but it gives me subtle 'Freedom Writers' vibes.
I saw this with my sister who is not an animatiion fan
Get overall impression was "this is how a sheltered European Frenchie thinks Hispanic culture inside the United States look like, like they just played GTA (five)"
And while i don't fully agree, i can't help they just used the background because they visited los Angeles once.
I had the graphic novel when I was in France, had a very grimy atmosphere, and the art style was pretty good imo. The author also included a bunch of road trip photos from California, probably what inspired him to make the series.
Yeah it's very much a caricature of what california culture looks like to an outsider. The characters can be fun, but a lot have a bit of a forced edge to them so they come across more interesting than they are. And that can create a bit of a hollow feeling towards them sometimes
This movie is amazing, inspiring me always, I love the designs.
Now I just want Crip Mac to get his own anime.
Well I did find the blu ray in a sales bin for 5€ a couple years ago thinking to myself, ah might aswell just get it. I had not paid attention that it was in anyway linked to Studio 4°C XD
It was a very enjoyable movie for me. The Climate Change plot did feel out of place and kinda just dropped on as a heavy weight towards the end. It was interesting to see something so radically different by Ankama than their previous works.
Speaking of, their Dofus and Wakfu series was a lot of fun and the Dofus Movie: Julith is really where Ankama shines with their layouts, animation, and crafting a well rounded story with characters that all play a part in the story at large. The Dofus tv series Treasures of Kerubim helps to ground some of the background for the movie, though it isn't necessary to watch before hand.
Avid Andrew Callaghan enjoyer 😆
crip mac enjoyer

This was a pretty cool video on 55th street
Just noticed while trying to recommend your video that is kind of hard getting to it because of the MTFZ / MFKZ difference in the naming. You might wanna check up on it. Cheers!
Boondocks is the Boondocks BECAUSE it was made by Black people. That's why MKFZ misses the mark. Well-to-do french animators haven't experienced what the poor Africans in a Paris ghetto live today. If you want the real deal hire Black artists. We exist.
How does it miss the mark? Also, the animators/artists aren't the ones making the storyline, so in the end hiring Black artists would lead to minimal creative change.. If Black storymakers want to make stories, then its a matter of them making the stories.
@@_H8ed_ I guess it missed the mark when it came to black LA culture. Boondocks hits the mark on black culture and its people because it was written and created by a black person(obviously) while MKFZ is very dramatized and just a general caricature of the black LA gang life. The characters seem very hollow. This is kinda hard to explain but with Boondocks you can tell it was made by someone that understands black culture and with MKFZ its the opposite.
This movie.. The whole time I was watching it I was thinking I really should be loving this but for some reason it just didn't do it for me, I think mostly cuz of the plot, just didn't keep me engaged. It took like 3 times to get past the first third of it.. In fact I'm not sure if I watched it all the way through in the end
The following isn't an anime, but I was wondering if you would consider taking a look at a movie called Waking Life. I feel like it's definitely worth talking about in terms of its obscurity and weirdness. Also, another great video. I always wondered about this movie. All I had heard is that it wasn't good, but it was beautiful.
ive seen it, prefer a scanner darkly in terms of the directors work
@@Stevem I actually also prefer a Scanner Darkly, but I always thought waking life was more strange and obscure.
@@stheteller7470 it is those things lol , kinda feels like a lucid experiement really some of the convos are complete bollocks though
@@Stevem oh I absolutely agree. When I first watched it I actually hated it, but I loved the animation and soundtrack. But then I decided to watch it a different way. I watched it the second time by watching each conversation individually every night. It took around a month. But I actually like the movie now. A Scanner Darkly is the superior movie though, being more of a traditional movie, and with a deep and entrancing story, as well as proof that Keanu is an incredible actor.
I'm black and I love this movie
i love the uniqueness of this film as a whole, but when the mc looks like THAT and his buddies are just as equally absurd, it's a little bit off putting when he says he's seeing 'some trippy shit'
What's Boondobs? Did the video mean the cartoon Boondocks?
its soooo good! the best
Shout out Vince staples
“Appropriation” is a non-starter, the idea that cultural appropriation was a real thing was always idiotic and poorly argued and even worse in execution.
I watched this and it was like my edgy highschool doodles going on a cool adventure. I didn't hate it, the animation was real good too.
I guess it's weird for me to say this as someone who is almost obsessively keeping up with everything related to this comic (and the sequel coming out next year), but it really is quite mediocre. The comic especially sets up a lot of sub-plots and things which have no real pay-off or resolution - it feels like RUN just has thousands of "cool ideas" and cannot let any of them go, he has to cram all of them in there regardless if they add to the story or themes.
You suggested an adaptation of Loba Loca, and while I agree that the artwork by Singelin is superb, it's also written by RUN and has the same pacing issues - a constant barrage of new scenes and "situations" with not enough time to let any of them sink in or have proper impact. It's set up as a sort of coming-of-age story, yet Guada's arc is strangely undefined and nebulous. It's unclear to me in what way she has matured by the end or what lessons she has learned.
The whole series seems to have a big issue of "style over substance", where impressive visuals and homages to action film set-pieces take priority over telling a cohesive and poignant story. It's such a shame, too, because some of the plot-threads have potential to be interesting. Luna's defection from the Machos is amazing in theory - how do you break an entire childhood of being brainwashed into believing you're part of the "master race"? Pity the whole thing is conveyed in two short scenes and never expanded on...
Really hoping RUN takes a slower approach for MFK2 and thinks about his writing a bit more before putting things to paper, but given the similarly hyperactive style of the recent Mutafukaz 1886, I have my doubts.
Definitely felt like the movie was more offensive than appropriating😅
This movie looks awesome, the story......not so much.
I liked M☆F☆K☆Z better than Tekkonkinkreet.
Love the style, the plot is confusing as fuck and ended up being disappointing
muh appropriation, lol
MFKZ was ok. Like Tekkon Kinkreet I really like the world they built. It felt alive and watching it you felt immersed in it living there with the characters. The story itself was a mess. Really fell apart towards the end. A lot of things were left unexplained and the ending was definitely anti-climatic… very unsatisfactory
you are a she/they?
