What is the Animatrix? Matrix Revisited

My dad showed me Beyond when I was really young, over time I forgot about it but had recurring dreams about falling and stopping right before hitting the ground in a weirdly pastel world for years. When I rewatched it for the first time ever a few years ago it was such an intense sense memory to both the dreams I used to have and the moment of my mind being blown by the short as a child that I fully cried.

Beyond has always been my favorite for being dreamlike, being a bit of fancy, and for having this pastel pop art sense ability. A bunch of kids find a glitching part of their world and they mess around. Simple but so much more compelling than the violence and over-stylized fights in the other shorts.

The Animatrix was is under rated. I thought everyone was going to get hyped and be into it but aside from some of the nerds it actually went under the radar. Few years later i ask other if they watch it, they all say "yes" but they for some reason the don't seem to grasp the significant of this anime in its time and place. Each story was amazing.

I agree! I was eight when it came out - and being raised up to that point on the original “Matrix Trilogy”, as well as anime like “Akira”, I was so hyped the day I came home with my father from IKEA to watch this!
I rewatched it only last year as a double feature with “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Even though I couldn’t remember much of it up to that point, I still always knew it was great, and my memory didn’t fail me on it - it was great upon rewatch!

I love the Animatrix just as much as the first Matrix movie. It deserves to be talked about more and I can see it’s influence on sooo many movies and shows today like Love,Death,&Robots and even Thor: the dark world . Beyond and World Record were always my 2 favorites. The idea of pushing yourself so far past your own limits that you wake yourself up is brilliant and the idea that all “paranormal” phenomena is just glitches in the matrix is mind bending!

So unexpected to see the second renaissance so low on the list, and not that many commenting on it in the comments!
The documentary storytelling, fantastic momentum through music and editing, plus the perfect buildup of madness and dread made it an instant favourite.
Its the kind of short that made the matrix universe interesting, and it kept your pulse high throughout.
i dont think any of my friends were big matrix fanboys back in the day, but everyone i have talked about animatrix with in the later years always had the second renaissance first on their list as the most memorable.
Yeah, its not as stylistically great now as it was back then, but as a young animation student i remember it looking pretty fresh, and the merging of 2d and 2d worked really well.

The Animatrix was released when I was at university studying multimedia design and after watching it, I decided to focus on World Record for my animation module. I attempted to emulate a similar style of design for my own short and it gave me a huge appreciation for the amount of work that must have gone into it- I felt like I was going mad! World Record is always what I think of when it comes to The Animatrix, perhaps with Beyond in second place.

When I first saw the Animatrix, it blew my mind. Seeing that the machines were an oppressed race seeking vengeance, seeing the first people to break through the matrix's illusion... It all was so intensely philosophical, it changed my view of life and existence in general.

World Record and Beyond were my favourites, but honestly I loved almost all of them. The only one that I didn't love (and I still liked it) was Detective Story. It was a cool slice of noir, but other than its style I don't think it really did much.

It really is amusing that you brought up Blue Sub no.6 in reference to The Second Renaissance as I was just thinking about the 2 longest lasting effects of The Second Renaissance part 2 and Blue Sub no.6 for me. Overseer and The Thrill. Overseer with the song used in The Second Renaissance part 2, Supermoves and The Thrill being the band that did the soundtrack for Blue Sub (though their Speed Jazz album is far better, and the Blue Sub no.6 soundtrack is quite good tbh)
That said, my odd self will always look to Gankutsuou out of his works. But it should be no surprise what my favorite piece of this anthology is after saying that. It is of course, The Second Renaissance part 2. The music video-esque nature of that segment with that particular story told in that mostly visual manner where aside from the end, most of the voices are really just part of the sound effects, combined with that music is just perfect imo.
edit: There is a phrase commonly attributed to Sun Tzu, but afaik (and I just spent time searching again, just to be sure) not actually from the material that exists and is attributed to him (I am not going near the shitstorm that is the argument over his existence, and The Art of War's authorship) that really sounds a bit corny compared to stuff you can directly source but says "an evil enemy will burn their own nation to the ground in order to rule over the ashes' or some variation of that saying...... regardless of who originally said that (and I have heard a thousand different answers to that one) they really took it to heart when making this part of the lore to The Matrix. While I have no clue where that exact line comes from, the sentiment embodied in it, is shown time and again in actual history, two examples being the final surrender of Jerusalem by the crusaders and the threat of what they would do to its population, to the royal governor of Virginia in 1775 saying "...that are able and willing to bear arms, they joining his Majesty’s troops, as soon as may be, for the more speedily reducing this Colony to a proper sense of their duty, to his Majesty’s crown and dignity." by "reduce" he literally meant "reduce to ash".... not to mention this was the proclamation that threatened to free any indentured servant or slave who would fight for the crown (way to light a fire under the asses of the population with that, in Virginia of all places, so essentially he is threatening to burn their homes and take what they consider very valuable property away in order to return order to the land). Here they are both threats and not actual actions taken in the end (mostly, while not widespread as he would have liked, Lord Dunmore did end up with a few hundred former slaves on his side), but it shows that sentiment is older than the United States at the least.

Dude I grew up with Animatrix. Kid’s story and Beyond in particular made me who I am with my tastes I think, Kid’s Story showing me the possibilities of animation (and love for the sketchy line art style) and Beyond for giving me such a surreal and profound feeling, with how it moves, with its ideas (I mean it’s the reason why people like Satoshi Kon and Charlie Kaufman are my favorite directors, it’s harkens back to that surreal feeling of editing and presentation) and so much more. Anyways, thanks for this dude! Don’t burn yourself out because you’re one of my favorites :)

First I saw the Animatrix was on a music festival, the Second Rennaissance i specifically remember with the virtual mandalas and whatnot - it was that way of experiencing it, the visuals were so vibrant and fresh at the time that you would just put it out there to catch people with it, they would just forget what they were doing and stare. Now that you mention it, Shirow used religious imagery in combination with high tech in the Ghost in the Shell manga, specially in the second volume that came out at roughly the same time the Animatrix did. But Dick puts religion in a high tech setting in his Electric Sheep, so i guess thats not so new. Anyway, thanks for the video, it really takes me back!

This was a great project, it really fleshed out the world of the Matrix for me in a way that goes even deeper than the films did. I think this is because the amount of freedom given to the animators really allowed for them to expand on the concepts of the film in an organic and creative way, without ever contradicting the established lore
And yeah, World Record is by far my favourite as well. I'd even credit it as one of the first works of animation to really get me fascinated by the beauty and freedom of the medium

I’m curious if _Flight of the Osiris_ was conceived before or after the Matrix video game (since they are linked). I’ve always felt I had a slightly different Matrix experience because I played the games. The fact the games were written to take advantage of deleted scenes, it’s like I’ve seen the Extended Edition that most people don’t know exists. I was a little surprised to remember how narratively useless _Flight_ was without that context, it’s technically super important to the canon story (even if the pacing issues would have made those plot points impossible to explore on screen).
If you haven’t seen the scenes used for the Matrix video game, I definitely recommend looking them up. My favorite scene is Agent Smith, in Zion in his stolen meat suit, going (more) bonkers and carving Pi into his hand. It supports the “Agent Smith is the One/is also the One” theories, since Pi is technically unknowable and infinitely complex, but not so much that a sufficiently advanced mathematical calculation can’t (somewhat) accurately predict how it will affect the equation. He’s the representative of the chaos in the system that the machines were purposely plugging into their Matrix-calculus in order to predict the effects of it, but the machines only calculated for a single The One, not two, hence the unprecedented/unexpected ending with Machines vs Neo vs Agent Smith.
(This is subject to change with the new Matrix, I’m sure, but the actual canon or non-canon status of the game and the clips within has been a fun fan debate topic for years)

I tend to enjoy self contained stories a lot more than never ending sagas with the same characters over and over.
Reboots and remakes of the same story make me think that the creators can't let go and don't have any faith on the franchise doing well without depending on nostalgia or characters they love like in The Matrix's case, Neo and Trinity.

Animatrix 2 would definitely be interesting; we can only hope that with this new Matrix they delve into more world building outside of Hollywood.

My ranking is almost exactly like yours. But for me Beyond is the very best. Honestly is my favorite Matrix related thing after the first movie itself. Koji Moritmoto short Noiseman was the reason that I learned to draw and worked with animation and comics. And his work here is so original yet mundane, reconforting in a weird way. Really love that short. But besides that my ranking would be the same.

Whether exploring the world or the concepts or the application of them around time and space or mans nature to reality and connection to their own humanity or the connection of man made robots to their robotity or humanity, the whole thing was a really rich cake that was greater than the sum of it’s parts. Sort of why I loved fantasia 2000 or other compilations of vignettes. I think there are some that stand out more, but where they don’t play with new concepts or expand and instead dig into the themes the best explorations find the intimacy and humanity in the more humble stories. That being said people usually put flight of the Osiris and Matriculated at the bottom. I thought matriculated was actually the most interesting concept. It’s an idea that gets a little better the more you think about it. I wonder how the whole thing has aged. Haven’t seen it since I was a kid.

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  2 года назад +1

the issue with martriculated is the concept is interesting but the short spends a lack of time actually dealing with it, there's a long capture scene, then a messing about inside scene and then oh no we're being attacked by robots lets stop everything to fight bit, this part most of all is not needed the concept alone should be able to carry it

    • @Angels-3xist
      @Angels-3xist 2 года назад

@@Stevem yeah I do agree. It was the lack of exploration that made it less, but it had such unique and deep and different potential from the others. Defiantly the most interesting theme to me even though I liked it less the first time. Really I have to watch it again to remember what I thought. I just remember there being a deep exploration that could have happened and it being interesting to try to interpret. The kind of story that makes you think of another story. Biggest part of the Animatrix seemed to be building on imaginative novel “what ifs.” a great watch to inspire creative writers.

It's always been the high watermark for me when I see Hollywood studios comissioning Anime Studios to do something in their franchises. Thinking of the projects made for Batman and Halo for example. And sadly. Noone has yet to come close in getting the overall execution right. They seem to always be much more limited and they go for more of the reigned in style and anime creators that have yet to find their voice. Making it often feel like wasted potential.
The one exception to the trend of mediocrity in trying to ape the success of Animatrix is the recent Star Wars Visions anthology.
Now, if only we could get Morimoto to do a short for Visions 2...

    My ranking:
    8) A Detective Story - easily the worst of the bunch for me. The story is entirely pointless, adds nothing new to the Matrix lore, and ultimately feels like a waste of time as our main character dies at the end, with zero growth or awareness. I tend to skip through this one.
    7) Final Flight of the Osiris - A good idea of telling the story of what happened. But it's hampered with too much fanservice. It feels more like an exercise of style over substance. It has good atmosphere, but the directors are too busy with shallow things like the sexy intro fight instead of building characters or conflict.
    6) Matriculated - A great idea with an interesting concept, but mixed execution. The characters retraining the Machines to be allies is a great idea. Unfortunately, there's not much depth there in how they turn the Machine from enemy to ally. Props to them for that ending though.
    5) World Record - Good concept and solid execution, but done better in Kid's Story. Feels a bit like filler.
    4) Beyond - Loved the idea of this and it captures the adventurous human spirit and youth in general. I still wonder: what would have happened if Yoko went through that door? I always theorized she would wake up outside the Matrix and it was an exit point. Someone else I know thought it would destroy her "code/mind". Never got an answer to this question.
    3) Kid's Story - some deep themes on seeking, isolation, and thenstate of technology causing social isolation. The ending was a great idea and the animation, while unusual, flowed so well that it felt like a world in motion.
    2) Program - perfect balance of style meets substance. The animation is stunning and the emotional weight behind the choreography moves the fight. You feel for the character and her struggle, while questioning what really is real and where her loyalties lie. The twist ending is fantastic.
    1) The Second Renaissance 1&2 - Liked the history of man and machine and how it expanded the lore overall. Probably carries the most weight out of any of the shorts.
