That's a fair reaction, which I enjoyed thank you. Very much originally a 1970s Belfast band, that influenced later bands including Green Day (nicely acknowledged in the movie 'High Fidelity'). Yes Ulster is a province, not a county, but props to you for knowing it was on the Island of Ireland. A very influential band in my own English family, the boys owning the entire single, album and EP collection on vinyl back in the day. Probably more SLF fans in England than anywhere else. First independent album to break the UK Top 20. Some great childhood memories. Thanks for giving it a go, and sharing your reaction.

If you want a lyrics video to another of their songs, this is one for 'Suspect Device' ruclips.net/video/Lc9Cc6e98W4/видео.html. They are from the late 70s/early 80s, although they are still touring now. If you ever saw the film "High Fidelity" with John Cusack and Jack Black, this was the band the got played in the shop, betting somebody would think it was a new Green Day track. So much of their stuff focused on the political situation in Northern Ireland - more about the people keeping them locked in conflict than taking a side. It caused something of a rivalry with another N.Irish band, The Undertones, on account of them never singing about politics.

1978 original. So if it sounds familiar, you know where they got it from.

Grew up, with an older brother listening to SLF. He has since taken me to see them live, and they were so good. The Undertones.

I have seen Stiff Little Fingers live. They are still playing and still challenging authority. If you want something more contemporary from them, try Guilty as Sin. This song is from their first album, from 1978. They were very political. The song encouraged their fans to resist both the British Authorities (The RUC dogs of oppression = Royal Ulster Constabulary) and both the Loyalist and Republican paramilitaries, "they say they've got control of you - ignore the bores and their laws. SLF still close their shows with this song.

I think what he means is that Ulster was a province in the original country of Ireland, but when the Irish catholics and protestants starting fighting (catholics for a free Ireland and protestants for Union with UK) and Britain allowed the Irish to become independent (sort of) - Britain kept the northern tip, which was made up of most of the province of Ulster, they then called that part Northern Ireland.
