Yeah, as many others there - I'm happy that Tom decided to give KDM a chance. I have some love/hate relationship with this game, but still keep coming back to it from time to time - IDK, it just interesting, "AI" is interesting, design is interesting... It's a great game, yeah, quite dark and cruel, but then when you actualy overcome something - it's just feel good, like when you learn patterns in White Lion behaviour or when you finally get armor and now you don't just with one hit... Most of the time. So, again - other than some unclear rules (like "what if you get knocked back when you already knocked?" (answer is - nothing happened, because you can't be "re-knocked") or some other stuff) its game is awesome. I hope that we could see "first game" expiriense and, maybe, some games later down, when you already know rules etc.. Series of this game would be amazing, but that is not exactly DT speciality. So I just hope that we could see Tom and Friends get smacked with Lion claws for the first time :D
Tom, I know thematically it will probably not be your cup of tea, but I hope when you do play it, that doesn't hold you back from experiencing the rest of the game. I personally love the game but can completely understand how any number of things could put some people off. Hope you guys enjoy!
I like this game. It's a reminder that even in the worst of times, there are glimmers of light to hold onto. Both parts game, experience, and piece of unabashed art, in a world where almost everything else seems to be striving for accessible mediocrity.
Tom's going to flip about the idea you can assemble the mini to look exactly like the gearset you're using. The day has finally come to leave the predjudice towards this game behind. Embrace the chaos and depressing darkness!
Tom: I'll give you advice - the best way to experience the game is not to read the manual ahead of time. Start from the beginning of the book when you play your first game. It leads you through the rules VERY well.
Would be great to see this get a DT review. I love what I've seen of the gameplay, art style, and the theme but haaaaate assembling miniatures-especially when there's this many 😫 (Yes, I know you don't have to assemble them all straight away). If they brought out a pre-assembled version I'd probably get it.
Read through the rules. They are easy to get through especially with the opening (tutorial) battle. But don’t skim through them. I didn’t particularly like the theme, not a minis person even less so if I have to put them together, it’s a pricey game and kind of repetitive with random dice rolls/read on a chart. Yet for some reason the game is super fun, to me!!!
I love the aesthetic and theme of the game and I don't mind the price point. I have also not played it, but after watching some playthroughs I don't get the hype at all. It seemed incredibly boring to me. Maybe I'd have to play it, but I guess I'll never find out.
I'm in a similar boat except the price point is prohibitive in my case. I love the aesthetic but watching a playthrough left me curious but unenthusiastic. Maybe one day a friend will buy the game and I can try it myself but until then I'll just watch these videos.
That looks awesome! Would like to buy today.... And I like the Idea of all dark and dangerous. Don't find it depressing.... Will there be a German version?
Expect death. Do NOT get attached your characters or else you will be disappointed. Its not about them; its about the community. Also it has you lose start all over mechanic, which i know you hate. But for some reason im fine with it in this game. (You have to totally lose twice before that happens. Which the second time is a lot faster than the first time.) Expect bad luck. And some wonderful great luck. The butcher was murdering all my teammates and i instant killed him by luck of the draw and roll.
@@harryosborne8215 so you can lose the battles, but when your population goes to zero, thats you lose and have to start over with year 0... but you don't lose all your progress. @@TheErnieforss I’m going to go ahead and answer my own question. That’s cheating. It sounds like you were introduced to the game by a friend who took it (ridiculously) easy on your group because none of what you said happens. I have played for four years, I am well versed with the rulebook and all story events from core. Look, the benefit of board games over video games is that you can do what you want. Homebrew is a thing. But normally it’s just slight cheats here and there, or rerolling when you shouldn’t. What you’re describing is absolutely, beyond-insane busted / unfair at the same time. When your population hits 0, that’s it. The games over. The end. You can fill in a box under “lost settlements” but it takes FIVE lost settlements to even get the first bonus which is a terrain piece during the prologue. That’s all you get. You don’t find any of your old stuff, nothing like that happens. That’s nonsense. When you play like that, we are playing completely different games. It’s incorrect to be telling anyone that those are the rules. They are not.
@@TheErnieforss if you ask whoever runs your group to show you in the rulebook where that happens, they won’t be able to. They made that up. Now, I admire the compassion if they were simply trying not to lose your interest, but that’s just not the case
You don't need to use the miniatures, the book is a "rulebook" but its also a tutorial and campaign book, like a D&D adventure almost. Also what's your complain about the wrap? do you want your stuff to be scratched or loss?
Thanks for trying to keep an open mind. I saw some of your past discussions with your guys and it was a bit disappointing whenever KDM came up because of all the eye rolling.
@@TheWildernessEnthusiast I sold them a couple of years ago. I bought the kickstarter for $300. I tried to build the starting 4 minis and failed miserably. Since I'd tried to do it, I sold the entire mini package on Facebook for $175. Had multiple offers within an hour. If I want to sell the Gambler's chest, I can probably $200-$300. So effectively the game was free.
I do enjoy some "gloomy" games, such as Gloomhaven (JotL), Mansions of Madness, Arkhams Horror LCG, etc but I get the feeling that this game might be orders of magnitude more dark...? Should make for an interesting review whenever you get a chance to do it...
I think the concept and game mechanics are interesting, but the art style, aesthetics, and world are too disturbing to me. Just trying to look up things about the game years ago left me feeling disturbed looking at the art for the models. I always joke that the artist has some deep issues to draw and sculpt these horrifying things. They really are made of nightmares. Tom, I can't wait to hear your opinion about the game. I think you and I will share the same thoughts about it.
Your mileage may vary, but in my opinion there are three camps of boardgame enthusiasts with regards to KDM - those who have played and have money tied up in it, those who have played and have no money tied up in it, and everybody who hasn't played and thinks it's too expensive (and/or too explicit, gory, and disturbing). The people who haven't played - even in a simulation and haven't been drawn in enough by the game's themes and components to think $400 is a reasonable price for a single game will likely reaffirm that thought if they actually pay for it and feel buyers remorse. The people who have played but have no money in it (that's me) probably think it has interesting mechanics and would be interested in something less costly but similar for their own collections. The people who were enchanted enough to invest money in it swear it's the greatest game ever created and absolutely worth every penny and will wholeheartedly defend it. This defense of a game you've already shelled out for isn't uncommon in our hobby, but as we're talking about a significant amount of money here - the defense within the KDM community is, IMHO a bit over the top sometimes. That's the main thing I wanted to say. If you'd like to read thoughts about someone from that middle camp (who obviously doesn't speak for everyone) keep reading. I'm personally rather indifferent to gore and even the very *ahem* adult themes the expansions explore (there's very little of the latter here - but a lot of the former), so am only focused on the mechanics. The game is essentially a boss battler with civilization aspects. So it's similar to a mostly on-the-rails D&D campaign where instead of fighting 60 tiny frogmen to get to the one giant frogman, you just fight the giant frogman. If you manage to defeat him, you'll use his froggy parts to make weapons and armor or maybe structures so you can make even better weapons and armor. While you're back at camp you'll make some decisions about what kind of society you want with an eye on how those decisions affect the game mechanics. Next, if you still have enough people in your camp, you might go out to hunt and (after a phase on that skinny long board that rarely every does anything positive for you) end up fighting a harder giant frogman, or a giant beetle woman instead using your froggy weapons and armor. This is why I say it isn't strictly on the rails, because when you hunt you frequently have options as to what you'll be hunting and what you'll be hunting with. Occasionally some scheduled blight will befall your camp and change things up, or something might come hunting you instead of the other way around. The combat itself is very sound and usually offers you a fair amount of options. The star of the show here is the monster AI deck and the fact that you're attacking various parts of the monster with different effects. There are very few instant death opportunities for the monsters, but TONS for your warriors who will roll on a table and often never get up or at least be greatly diminished (and on rare occasions buffed). In addition, you have to roll once to see if you're going to make a successful attack and then again to see how hard you're hitting (and if it does any damage). This is the single most frustrating mechanic in the game for me, because that first roll to see if you got past the monster's defense does nothing if you get a crit, whereas getting a crit on the second roll is table cheering elation. I am blessed with first roll crit mastery and cursed with second roll abysmal failure. So here's my review of the game: it's a good time that I like playing that I will never ever ever ever pay $400 to play. If I had ten times the earnings I have now and $400 felt like $40 I probably still wouldn't buy it because it just seems like a silly amount of money for a single game. Thanks for reading and have a great day.
Why do unboxing if you already have convinced yourself that you hate and don't like the game? It defeats the purpose because you have convinced yourself and will find every possible reason to hate it and show it in the worst possible way.
Finally ... you are really late. Where have you been for the last 4 years since Kingdom Death : Monster 1.5 was released? ;) Have fun discovering. Kingdom Death is one of the greatest gaming experiences ever.
Our group got in a TTS play to see if we liked it - it was a bust at the point we were wiped out a second time ending that campaign with the nemesis. The theme IS amazing. The village building is great. The battle mechanics are a let down. Dice roll dice roll flip card death. Not a lot of choice once you are in combat that matters. This is the type of game for someone who does want a dive with a dark theme and brutal nature that doesn't mind total luck fails. I have my complaints about Gloomhaven with how slow it unravels and the agonizing slow drip of campaign and story elements, but at least that one has us coming back to play mostly due to it's fantastic game mechanics (most recently via the the new full campaign release of the app).
This game will get destroyed by Tom. Too heavy, repetitive, and roll a die to see what happens. And i’m not even talking about the art which i’m sure he will hate too. Looking at his top 100 it’s obvious it’s not a game for him…and for me.
I mean... he liked Middara quite a bit, and to me, Middara's combat is more boring that the AI system here. But yeah, I'm not expecting him to like it that much, though I'd bet he likes the settlement idea to an extent.

Have fun with it, i must admit i have 😁 I houseruled the ending a bit, because i like hope and a good ending after hardship. IF you make it that far.
I'd love to hear how you houseruled it!
Yes! You just purchased my favorite game.
This game just looks and sounds incredible.
Get on it Dice Tower!! Such an epic gameplay experience. Have fun guys and gals
Watching you open this is priceless. Very entertaining
If you glue your fingers together .. USE REVELL GLUE not superglue. These are plastic parts that don't need superglue.
Props for trying this one out. It's a flawed beast with some very unique and good mechanics.
Tom, I know thematically it will probably not be your cup of tea, but I hope when you do play it, that doesn't hold you back from experiencing the rest of the game. I personally love the game but can completely understand how any number of things could put some people off. Hope you guys enjoy!
Can’t wait to see the 4 squares review!
THE DAY HAS COME
So glad your giving it a try
I like this game. It's a reminder that even in the worst of times, there are glimmers of light to hold onto. Both parts game, experience, and piece of unabashed art, in a world where almost everything else seems to be striving for accessible mediocrity.
I personally love miniature assembly but i can understand if someone doesnt like it.
Whaaaaat. No way Tom’s playing this (haven’t watched yet so maybe he said as much, don’t @ me)
Maybe as part of a 24-hour marathon, this'll be the adult swim game
Holy crap! That is so much shrinkwrap!!
Really necessary to shrinkwrap the main board... and the book?!
Tom's going to flip about the idea you can assemble the mini to look exactly like the gearset you're using. The day has finally come to leave the predjudice towards this game behind. Embrace the chaos and depressing darkness!
dont get to attached to your character, everybody dies
Everyone *may die. Not everyone dies always.
@@BailiwickVideos oh, but in KDM everyone dies, one way or the other, sooner or later
Lance Archer's favorite game.
Tom: I'll give you advice - the best way to experience the game is not to read the manual ahead of time. Start from the beginning of the book when you play your first game. It leads you through the rules VERY well.
+1 to avoid spoilers and never read the book until instructed.
How much does it cost ?
4:40 "man, everything is minus" maybe if you check on the back of the token, you can find a PLUS for each minus...
Sprues. Sprues as far as the eye can see
Read through the rules.
Never thought I'd see this on the channel lol.
Which the second time is a lot faster than the first time.)
Expect bad luck. And some wonderful great luck. The butcher was murdering all my teammates and i instant killed him by luck of the draw and roll.
What do you mean you have to totally lose twice, and how is the second time faster
@@harryosborne8215 so you can lose the battles, but when your population goes to zero, thats you lose and have to start over with year 0... but you don't lose all your progress. You start with some stuff but your town doesnt have the same strength as before. Once you lose with the town weaken.... you lose the game and start all over again with nothing, but at least the town will be full strength.
Spoiler: after the first lost. The new people find your old town that once was and some of your stuff that was left behind.
@@TheErnieforss can you give me a rulebook page number where this information is found? Because that’s not at all accurate
Time for a Quackalope Dice Tower crossover?
Exactly what I was thinking! Haha!
No. Really, no.
is this 1.6? did you get it early?
1.5 i think. The board game was donated to him by the family of a deceased gamer.
@@nurseruben5431 - If that’s true, damn.
You don't need to use the miniatures, the book is a "rulebook" but its also a tutorial and campaign book, like a D&D adventure almost.
Also what's your complain about the wrap? do you want your stuff to be scratched or loss?
Just sold my mostly fully painted copy no regrets. Loved painting and building the models but the gameplay is pretty stale.
Do a playthrough video
Thanks for trying to keep an open mind. I saw some of your past discussions with your guys and it was a bit disappointing whenever KDM came up because of all the eye rolling.
Subvert your expectations, the rules have to be read very literally, don’t assume thing or do so at your detriment.
I sold my minis for about what I paid for the game. I can't imagine Tom liking this for a pile of reasons.
As in you JUST sold the miniatures?
@@TheWildernessEnthusiast I sold them a couple of years ago. I bought the kickstarter for $300. I tried to build the starting 4 minis and failed miserably. Since I'd tried to do it, I sold the entire mini package on Facebook for $175. Had multiple offers within an hour. If I want to sell the Gambler's chest, I can probably $200-$300. So effectively the game was free.
My favourite game
I do enjoy some "gloomy" games, such as Gloomhaven (JotL), Mansions of Madness, Arkhams Horror LCG, etc but I get the feeling that this game might be orders of magnitude more dark...? Should make for an interesting review whenever you get a chance to do it...
KDM is easily next level. It's at the same level as Gantz / Berserk.
Ah Kingdom Death, the only game I needed to get a lawyer for a client painting their stuff lmao ruined it for me!
Best game ever.
I literally know nothing about this game except for Tom has refused to play it. This is super exciting to me though haha
Why'd y'all subject poor Tom's innocence to this?
hmmm .. I wonder what the Tom of 15 years ago would have to say about this
We who are fans of this game have this abusive relationship with it. We suffer and we like it. This is the true nature of horror.
Holy crap!!
Why do unboxing if you already have convinced yourself that you hate and don't like the game? It defeats the purpose because you have convinced yourself and will find every possible reason to hate it and show it in the worst possible way.
Pretty epic video, after all the hate this game got from you ;) I am not saying its a great game, but i like open-minded approach :)
Nah, I’m good lol I ain’t ready.
....I hate unpinted miniatures
...I super hate unpinted miniatures to mount
🤣
Tom ty for giving this a go. I question if you will like the game its not for everyone but is one hell of a great game.
Finally ... you are really late.
If you play this just realize it’s a 2 player game. It’s not that fun with more much of the time.
XD that playthroug is going to be something. Though the outcome will probably be "interesting gameplay but the theme is a big no no" ^^
This game will get destroyed by Tom.
Goodness...got anxiety just watching Tom reveal that minis box. I'm with Tom, definitely not for me. Good luck, Roy! Hope you guys have good time (finally) exploring this game.
4:36 "man, everything is minus" maybe if you check the other side of that board... Bias be bias, you want the game to be mean and bad, so it is Tom...
Omg do you only like happy fluffy games? Watch a scary movie
I guess you don't watch many of my reviews. Try 'em out, you'll find that I have diverse sets.
I always laugh and shudder when US citizens place MA on things. Blood and goore is most of the time PG13, but the moment genitalia can be seen the rating goes up to mature. What's wrong with kill, maim, burn? Sexuality is where the real evil begins! Cringe.
Might as well just throw this right into the trash after unpacking it.
Looks like a game that will get a yt tutorial that lasts an hour. Too much and probably too expensive for my taste.
I have heard this game is very highly regarded and loved, but watching you go through that was all "nope, nope, nope". Hard pass for me, not my style at all! Thanks for covering it though
When you do play the game, I advise putting some clothes on some figures.
this game is so extra. this has got to be for new boardgamers that fall for the miniature craze

Kingdom Death was one of the first big kick starters back in 2016. You got everything in that box for 100 bucks. The minatures in KDM are some of the best you can find anywhere, but the game is amazing even without them. Many people were able to buy the game, sell the minis for it and break even.
@@mahuloq7562 bro people are spending upwards of $1500+ on this game and all of its miniatures. That's ridiculous imo
