Finally someone shows how the damn thing closes. Hahaha. I have watched hundreds of these videos trying to figure out what keeps the fish from falling out and finally someone shows the lines to the lead-line. Thanks! Mystery solved for this land-locked guy who has never seen a net in his life.
***** haha i know it sounds silly for someone who has used these nets but for someone who has never seen one it was a great mystery but it all makes sense now. Thanks from Kentucky.
***** haha thanks bud. Im moving to Africa in a couple weeks right on the beach so I've been watching videos on cast nets, crabbing, shrimping, octopus traps, making sea salt, surf fishing, flounder, lobster traps and all that cool salt water stuff. My only experience with the ocean is catching a little spiny fish that puffed up til i threw him back. I was four years old on a family vacation then. Haha
Joshua Taylor, I have been castnetting for over 28 years, this video, by far,is clearest and most informative I have ever seen. The method I throw my net is completely different because I usually do it standing in breast high water, but as for standing on something or shallow water, you makes a piece of cake the way you do it. Thanks for the great video.
Everyone is so afraid of putting it in their mouth but this method seems the easiest to remember when learning without the video. I’m about to go give it a try. Thanks and hope you’re doing well and in health in these days
Hey Joshua great instructional video for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to show newbies the ropes instead of just showboating like a lot of other people do these days.
Very good video. The best one I've seen on RUclips. I have a large net for 3 years any can't throw it but wit this video I think I can now. Appreciate your help Cpt.
This is great for me. I'm smaller and younger and all the other videos never work but this one always does and now I have pretty much unlimited bait fish anytime I need them.
Nice job. Been trowing 9-13 foot nets for about 40 years. I learned to throw the net from my wife's grandfather who was born on Terra Ciea Island on Tampa bay in 1898. This is how he taught me, so I'm safe to say that this how we "old timers" do it !
THANK YOU! This is hands down the best tutorial I've ever seen. You've helped me to cross over the line to try to lean to throw one. I had previously used a device that helped me throw smaller nets like a frisbee but it can't handle larger or heavy nets and is not of much use usually. I now feel confident enough to purchase a net and practice throwing it using your guide here. Thank you! Now I just have to decide size/mesh and weight to purchase as I'm a big guy at 6'3 370 lbs and I can probably sling a pretty good size one once I learn. So I know a smaller one will be better to learn on but I don't want to waste the money on a net that won't be optimal later. Thanks for discussing mesh size and recommended depths for them-that was very useful for a greenhorn like me. Many thanks Josh-!!
Hey buddy.. I am Moving to Punta Gorda April 5th. I am glad I stumbled upon your vids. You are very thorough and will be an asset to my catch rate. Thanks for taking the time to make all the info vids. I'll look you up when I am situated.
Great instruction. I've tried out many of the other cast net techniques from other RUclips videos, but this one worked best for me. Thanks. Also, at least for me, letting the section in my mouth get pulled out (a little pull pressure vs. just letting it go) helps me get a better spread. It opens up the backend better. Also, this technique is easier to do in the tight confines of small center console boat, plus you don't have to hold the weight for a long time. I've seen many cast netters that can only throw the net a few times because holding the weight for a long time does them in. Thanks again. Roger.
Great informative video. I used to know how to throw a cast net but have forgotten since I haven't used one in a few years. You're video helped remind me pretty quick and helped a lot, Thanks!
yes very nice, just bought a cast net, threw it 6 times ...opened once lol I'll try your way ...Thx.. You catching any Crab's off your dock...I've been making a couple Crab trap's .... never tried before....
I watched lots of cast net videos cuz I must learn how. Yours is by far the best explanation & method. Thank you. It could be much better if your photographer w ould show what you are doing.
Good instructions. I've seen a lot of very poor "Instructions" that did not tech anything. : ) It's been a while for me back in Panama City near the bay where I used my 6ft cast net nearly every weekend to catch bull minnows and finger mullet and some shad for the fresh water. At least now if I get me a 10ft I should get it out without error. Cheers - Happy Fishing!
Hi Capt. Taylor, IF I could sing, "Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody, I got some money cause I just got paid. Now how I wish I had someone to talk too, I'm in an awful way!" Ha-ha!!! Seriously Dude, good video. Wish I could do it. For reasons only you would know, I can't but it is a VERY Educational Video and I was actually given one f these nets. I believe I will be able to tell my brother in law how to throw it. Thanks Dude! Have a Super weekend and catch some fish, OK? Take care!
Thanks for your video, being left handed, i guess i learned to throw a 4 ft. net, the wrong way, as i am trying to learn to throw a 7 ft. cast net, but the right way. Thanks from Texas.
Dang, no wonder I have a hard time lol. I gather with my left hand like you do, but when I throw, I throw it left handed. I'm neither (or both, whatever) handed. It's made a lot of things in life 'interesting' lol. I guess I will have to learn to throw right-handed, or gather the net in my right hand so I can toss it with my left hand.
Yea, I objectively reviewed my boat, while trying not to be bias. I've been on many inshore boats and I prefer my boat over the ones I have been on. Really it's all relative and preference. You just have to find the one that is functional for your intended purpose and one you are happy with.
this basically how i throw mine. you make it seem hard by adding stuff but you can get the same effect with that same net with just folding it and grabing the lead line, then throwing it. the most important thing is to get the lead line to fully open up with as much force as possible. really focus on spinning it to were it rotates outward as much as you can. it takes practice but youll get it.
Really informative. I have a small net now and it's stiff as a board. I'm looking to get a larger net. What size net are you using in this video? I think a bigger net will be a little easier to throw and it will give me a larger surface area to cover on smaller schools of bait. Thanks
Hello DJ, I wouldn't say throwing a larger net is easier but practice makes perfect. I am using a 10 foot net in this video and that is what I personally prefer.
D.J. Taylor Take your net and put it in a 5 gal bucket with water then add fabric sortener in and mix it up and let it sit. I do mine before I go to bed then when I wake up I pull it out and bam soft and ready to go! I hope this help .
How much fabric softener should I use. Everybody I have seen on forums have said to use about 2 cups and hot water as hot as it will get out of the tap. Let me know what you think.
***** Thanks for your advice. What brand net would you recommend in the 10 ft size. I'd like to find one that has a lot of lead per foot so it will sink fast. Thanks
D.J. Taylor I would use a cup or less. its only 5 gals and you dont even need that much water just enough to cover the net. let it sit over night rinse and it should be ok.
Thanks for the sharing! If you hook the part in your mouth on your left thumb will the trow still work? I do that on a shorter net to avoid the nasty water in the river and ICW. Just asking so to learn.
I was always told to do quick snatches when retrieve so it closes the net a little bit quicker. Dont know if that works really but just a precaution. I throw a 12 foot as well and I am trying to tweak it a little. Towards the end I found out we throw it the same way but I fan it in air instead of the ground just because it is quicker for me.
Finally, a video that shows, illustrates and demonstrates "how-to" instead of .. "hey look at me video".. Nice job man.
Thanks 2300cbrown, I appreciate the compliment.
Finally someone shows how the damn thing closes. Hahaha. I have watched hundreds of these videos trying to figure out what keeps the fish from falling out and finally someone shows the lines to the lead-line. Thanks! Mystery solved for this land-locked guy who has never seen a net in his life.

Thanks for the sharing! If you hook the part in your mouth on your left thumb will the trow still work? I do that on a shorter net to avoid the nasty water in the river and ICW. Just asking so to learn.
+Sonny Reeves Hello Sonny, I have never tried this method, so I can't say but if you do and it works let us know. :)
Nice THANKS!!
+W Kohler Thanks and you're welcome!
Funny that you mention that, I am uploading a review for my Hewes Redfisher right now. It should be up and ready in about an hour or so.
The beard, what happened to the beard bud?😂😁 is that a double? Great video. 😎
This is before my serious beard days, now I feel naked without it.
Yalled Absolutely, you prepare it and throw it the way you feel most comfortable. Quick jerks will close the net and help prevent bait from escaping.
Nice tim wade got the 5ft. Gettn a 10 ft asap
Doug Noble Awesome
