Couple things about this spell.
1) The human skeleton weights only about 15 kg. You could carry a couple of those with you wherever you go. If you "tetris" it properly, you could even fit them in a chest so that the townspeople don't freak out,
2) If you lock that chest, you could pre-animate your skeletons that you carry with you. It gives you a contingency plan if you fail to be present at the right time of the day to use a spell slot to keep control of your 4 skeletons, as they will still be contained.
3) No one said you _had_ to use a spell slot to keep control of 4 skeletons. Once your box is full, you very well could just start working on another box of skeletons and leave the now neutral-evil-uncontrollable skeletons in the box. Just because you don't control them doesn't mean they can't be an asset in a fight or act of heinous terrorism. That way, no one will think of giving you reasons to commit heinous acts of terrorism.
4) It can take longer than you would think to bump into 12 full sets of human bones. Get started early. Sure, your party might think you're a little weird for using invisible servant to scratch and quicklime the flesh off every bandit that pisses off your barbarian, but as soon as you hit level 5, you'll be ready.
5) No other spell in the game gives you 4 actions per turn-per-spell-slot-for-24-hours without requiring concentration. It literally is broken. It's like they didn't care to balance the spell at all. It just breaks the action economy.
6) A wand of magic missile does not require a spellcaster level to use. If you can make them or can buy as many of them as you want, every skeleton can deal 3d4+3 per turn. At level 5, that's 36d4+36 (average 126) per turn for a bonus action that doesn't take your concentration. It always hits. There's no saves.
7) Skeletons can wear robes, gloves and masks, even armor if needed. If you use minor illusion, you can make your voice sound like it's coming out of one of them. That way, your enemy takes 126 damage per round not-counting your own actions, while guessing which mage to attack.
8) Skeletons don't need to eat, sleep, drink, or even breathe. They don't require light to perform their task, and don't get sunburned either. They have an int. of 6 and can perform some basic tasks if ordered to. They don't require a wage and don't unionize. Whilst it takes a bonus action to give an instruction, they can all follow a different one. If you set them on a simple task like working looms, mining, or laboring the ground, you can make products that are so abundant and so far below market averages that you can crash any local economy in a matter of months.

A lot of level three spells are weirdly good
Bag of Holding could be filled with an entire band of skeletons. Good way to carry many of them around inconspicuously. When needed dump them out watch them reform then run while they attack with overwhelming action economy.
Don't you have to use a bonus action per order though? I thought you could only command 4 at once if they all took the exact same action, which works for the magic missile thing

...Yea. I kinda did that to flee with my recently deceased teammates as a good character. Don't ask. They got better. They had a blast roleplaying their zombie-selves, until I could ressurect them.

Only higher level support nerds can do it.
Once they use their action to confirm the veracity of another nerd's sayings, the said nerd gain the "overly confident" status.
A nerd touched by "overly confident" cannot be frighten, scared, or intimidated for 24 hours. It will also give a bonus of 50% to all XPs the nerd recover during those 24 hours.
To balance this, the nerd also loose 4 points in Charisma, as he is temporarly really annoying.

Agreed on the animation, Honestly the "fireball in the tavern, showing peoples faces melting off" crossed a line for me, and made me pretty uncomfortable. But the info was excellent as always.
@@Ardith_Prime I’m always rather graphic in my descriptions of the consequences of my players’ actions. They’re playing heroes. Heroes should feel compassion even to their enemies. In the first session a little boy they rescued watched them closely while they slit an unconscious orc’s throat. Now there’s one more boy who’ll grow up seeing ruthlessness as a valid path to results. Maybe I’ll let them meet him again.
@@flying-sheep D&D is a game originally designed around roleplaying killing lots of sentient creatures because they are intrinsically Evil with a capital E. The more you think about this, the less morally justifiable it becomes.
This is not exclusive to D&D. Large parts of fiction in general rely on the audience being willing to judge the Other as subhuman, which is the sort of mindset that has historically led to genocide.
So let's go slaughter some orcs!

So basically in RUclips's attempt to make their platform better for advertisers, they made it worse for advertisers.

If you're referring to Undying Servitude, it's just 1/long rest, isn't it? You can't use spell slots to cast it, so you're basically bound to 1 minion per long rest.

That's not everyone's thing though, do remember that some folks version of fun is... actually story based. Much like how Zee's other stuff involving that Tengu Thief is really neat and fun sounding to me.

Depends on the Alignment. I’ve got a neutral Tiefling Death Cleric who is fine raising evil creatures and entities as bodyguards as he controls them.
Alternatively, I had a lawful evil undead black Dragonborn Oathbreaker who lost favor with his goddess and did everything he could to try and win back her support and actually die. It’s been five years and I’m still waiting for that conclusion.

Ah I remember the good old days in 2nd edition when there was basically no limits to what you could raise. Not to mention evil priest could just "Control undead" at will to gain more and more. Yes you could raise entire countries of people into your unending zombie/skeleton army.
You haven't lived until you taken down a dragon with something like 4000 skeletons.
High level Wizards can still do that with a couple finger of death and just store them in a demiplane

Fun Fact: Burning an 8th-level and 9th-level slot allows you to make 5 Wights... Who can each animate 12 Zombies... Meaning for an 8th-level and 9th-level you can have 60 Zombies and 5 Wights.

You can also give a Skeleton a Headband of Intellect using your bonus action to command it to Attune. Have a wizard apprentice
I had some fun with a necromancer once. Then for some reason we started to exclusivly fight enemies that either don't leave behind corpses or cannot be reanimated.
I'm assuming you had too much fun as a necromancer.
I had a similar situation as a snake slinging druid.

I assume that when my possy of Zombies reached a certain size and just started surrounding anything the dm threw at us he deemed them to be a problem. Personally I blame the fact that that we were using flanking. The zombies literally had advantage all the time. The poor enemies just disapeared screaming beneath a mound of zombies.

Honestly, this video actually made the point that if Warlocks did have Animate Dead, they could be horribly overpowered.
Warlocks regain their spell slots after every short rest they take. Given, when they get 3rd level spells at level 5, they only have two spell slots and they cap at four spell slots at level 17.
But this means a Warlock can refresh their spells every hour. Even if we say the Warlock has to sleep 8 hours and say they only take three short rests in the sixteen hours they are awake, that would mean as much as eight 3rd level spell (two for waking up after a long rest and six more for the three short rests) casts a day at 5th level
@@josephperez2004 Well if you want to do that there's always(usually) multiclassing. Doesn't quite hit off until level 10, but a Warlock/Wizard is perfectly viable as a multi
Technically if Unearthed Arcana is allowed though, you'd be better using a Wild Soul Barbarian 6 / Divine Soul Sorcerer X. But the math for that shenanigans gets messy fast
@@josephperez2004 Warlocks also can have animate dead if you use the class feature variants Unearthed Arcana, which is one of my favorites.

I wonder if Tasha's added an invocation for Warlocks to get Animate Dead specifically because of this video.
It’s so bad though. You get one skeleton of zombie RAW.
If you need a minion from an invocation, take Minions of Chaos.
And if your DM let’s you cast Planar Binding at 6th+ level by treating your Mystic Arcana uses like spell slots, or lets you take a higher level Planar Binding as a Mystic Arcanum, then you can keep your elemental for a while.

I wonder where this falls in the timeline? Like, the Skank that fought Trevor was at least high enough level to cast Finger of Death, because he had to be to cast clone, and there were way too many zombies in that room to be sustined by Animate Dead (I counted about ~60) Animate dead = 12-13 (technically more at higher level castings, but why would you do that) and let's be super generous and say, 2 Undead Wights via Create undead (which grant him an extra 12 zombies each) and a third permanently controled Wight via Command Undead for a total of 48 zombies. Still too many, so Finger of Death must be involved.
If this episode happens before Trevor, then we are time traveling, how do we know where we are in the ASEU?
If this happens after Trevor, why is such a powerful necromancer wasting time/spellslots on Animated Dead? Is it just to spend time with his brother, or is these two running an instructional class canon?

And this is why I think Trevor is still alive. Because turning everyone in his home town into zombies severs no point unless he is alive. But if he is its all a twist the knife make all of his town into zombies.

@Viktor Magnusson Hm, that would be pretty cool! Something like find familiar, makes your book hover after you, do cute things like display words and pictures to communicate, can store scrolls for you in its pages, maybe once per long rest lets you swap a prepared spell for an unprepared one, or use a spell slot to cast one spell you know but hadn't prepared that day. Some little flavorful conveniences.

One important thing to mention: a 14th level necromancer can attempt to assert control over undead creatures PERMANENTLY, whether it be your undead or someone else’s. Keep that in mind when building your army

@@@ASquared544 @Alexander Blixt but you can take control of a undead that creates more undead under it's control, like a mummy lord(probably the best option, cr 15 intelligence 11(more than 8 so it gets advantage on the save, but it has magic resistance so arguably that doesn't even matter, but crucially less than 12 so it doesn't get to make the save again every hour), the mummy lord itself can cast animate dead, and it has 3/3/2/1(for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th level slots respectivelly) meaning it can control up to 56 undead(!), and finally he has a lot of strong abilities that mean he doesn't really need to use it's spells to be effective(althought you probably want it to stay away from the fight so as to not risk losing it and suddenly having to deal with the now free skeletons/zombies))

These are some of the fun ones.
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, page 71, retcons this. The "Undying Servitude" invocation allows a level 5+ warlock to cast..... you guessed it.... Animate Dead!

@@benjaminwahl8059 Which means you top out at 1 minion, because you can't animate a new one and reestablish control of an existing one with the same cast. Unless you play around with the timing of your long rests, since you lose control 24hrs after you animate or refresh your control, but regain your uses on a long rest, which has no set schedule. But even then you just top out at 4 minions.
Timing around your long rests can be easier to deal with depending on your race. If you're an Elf, your long rests are only 4 hours instead of 8, making it actually possible for 4 minions
My warlock has this and while I know it’s not as powerful as the wizard variety, this is still so much fun to have
@@Trinithium sleep and rest aren't synonymous. Sleep always grants rest, but resting doesn't require sleep. Rest is simply a set of changes that occur when its' conditions are met.

@@Richan2150 Two different songs by the same artist. "Tempted" and "Something Good" both by The Hazelnuts. "Something Good" is a lot more upbeat after the intro part but "Tempted" remains the same as in the video EXCEPT when it gets to the part with the men singing the line eerily. I think that might be from a cover of the song but I don't know who sang it.

There’s a UA that adds animate dead to the warlock spell list. Getting the free upcasting on it is fantastic, not to mention resting repeatedly to animate larger hordes than even the wizard.
@@talongreenlee7704 now that I think of it, that's probably the reason why it's not on the Warlock list but it's so stupid it's not there in SOME way for Undying locks
rylog8 you can get Create Undead at 11th level. You can only animate ghouls, though. You can’t upcast it to get wights that themselves can animate dead.
you know those invocations that say "once per rest you can cast x spell using a warlock spell slot"? animate dead needs one of those

You underestimate the power of Eldritch Invocations. At will Mage Armor, Invisibility, and Hold Monster.
Although, the UA class feature variants actually DOES give Warlock animate dead.

Conjure Woodland Beings (4th level Druid spell) takes 1 action to cast and can summon 4 panflute-playing satyrs for an hour of concentration. I think that's a better choice for a magical band.
I happen to have a tiefling lore Bard with his own "Band of Bones" who uses Thaumaturgy to howl like dethklok as he shreds his lute. It is glorious.

Back in the day (3.5) the spell wasn't limited to humanoid OR medium, instead being limited entirely by HD.
This made for some absolutely hilarious abuse, like the armor-plated skeletal mammoth we ran around with. It had a seat in the ribcage that the necromancer rode in as a "pilot", an animated ballista on top and basically operated as a fantasy equivalent to a Star Wars assault walker :P.
One of my character ideas is a Divine Soul Sorcerer that is NG and animates the dead to help people. Though she doesn't see her undead creations as minions or throw-away assets. She sees them as her children.
Eventually, with DM approval, she'd gain a bit of a cult following and her divine soul would begin to grow seeing as it is technically a mote of a divine spark. After that she begins the path to becoming a demigod.

@@KazumiKiguma You also still need a full 8 hours to benefit from a long rest if you're an elf, you just aren't asleep for 6 of them, allowing you to complete minor tasks

@@yoshi24800 While the elf only needs 4 hours of sleep all PC's require 8 hours of Sleep or Light Activity to gain the benefits of a Long rest. While it is very uncommon for this last bit to come up for most races Though it really shoulc come up more often for people working as adventurers, this is important bit of imformation for an elf. Though keeping in mind their are a lot of really productive actions that can be considered light activity, like reading, studying, copping spells into a spell bbook, cooking, esc. So this is still fairly strong.

True Ressurection can create a creature's body entirely if absolutely nothing of it was left. You need only speak the creature's name and they will be resurrected. You need only say "Blade in the dark, Orcstabber, Sqwqlgoth, Vengeance, Strahd Slayer and Twice King Trevor".

@@urahara64360 some of the previus caracters were a one episode thing, like a throwaway, but the ones showing whit this necromancer are like "canon" since he is reusing him so much so I asume he is gonna use her.
@@LikingLurker the second mcgenk has only appeared in one other episode where he was a virgin so changes can be made when reusing a character.

I think he's specifically referring to Clerics as Necromancers, same with Paladins, both of which can Animate Dead, but are worse at it than Necromancers.
Well, Oathbreaker Paladins can anyways, and are actually rather good necromancers surprisingly, though not as good as Necromancy Wizards. Death Clerics are pretty decent, but are more about blasting with necrotic damage than animated the dead.
Of course, with being an Oathbreaker or a Death Cleric, you run into the issue of them being DMG subclasses. You basically need an evil party or a party that doesn't mind a token evil teammate. In the latter, you also run into the issue of stuff like undead usually being enemies of the party, and generally being more built with opposing PCs rather than aiding them.
Here's some stuff I put together showing how many undead can be created and maintained with various configurations of spells, including a max-level necromancer with Raise Undead as their signature spell, spending all possible spell slots to create and maintain their army.

My favorite mailing/telecommunications system in a fantasy world: a bunch of underground tunnels full of skeletons ready to peasant railgun your packages/messages anywhere in like, an hour, logistically since they'd have to be brought into and out of mail lines and couried the rest of the distance but distinctly alive people.
