It was their final day, and they already had something planned. At the end of the day, they already showed them what can happen if you don't follow orders (logs on the head), so I believe they went a bit "easier on them" that day due to the gas room exercise.

I think this is a watered down version. I served for the korean army many years ago. Before entering the gas chamber they make you do a lot of squats, jumping etc just to make sure that you’re not holding your breath. And then we did take out our masks and had to sing, had to do squats altogether. The waving of the arm as you say were (1) to make sure you are still capable of following orders (2) make sure any chemical particles remaining on your uniform and body would fall off.

They were agreeing to join a foreign countries boot camp… what exactly is a mystery about it being hard, it’s boot camp. If anything this was easier than what most would have thought. The fact they can talk and laugh in formation is ridiculous by itself. 😂😂😂😂😂😂. This is so watered down.

@@taden2007so I do think they went a little "easy on them," but on smiling and/or laughing in formation... so I played Texas high school football, and the workouts were brutal to-muscle-failure type stuff. And one of my fellow o-linemen, for whatever reason, smiled and/or laughed through literally everything. Whether he was pancaking a defender, getting chewed out by a coach, or trying to get out one more rep in the weight room, big dumb grin. None of us (him included) understood it, but it was apparently just his stress response. But he was also a varsity starter for a reason.

If you dedicate your life to training seriously... Someone only watch the one-time taster and entertainment experience kids scout camp videos and say,
"You guys, it's not that big of a deal, why are you making such a fuss?"
Would you feel good if people responded like this?
Doing that would be like humiliating two years of your life. It would be like being denied youth, which can be considered the golden age of your life.
So, people need to have an attitude that allows them to change their positions and understand each other.

The Korean Army training center makes trainees sing military songs in gas chambers. All trainees had tears, snot, and drool, and their skin was itchy.
The Navy's gas training seems much easier than the Army's. Maybe it's because the army has a higher chance of being exposed to the gas.

We do take mask off and sing military songs and some physical training in the gas chamber in Korean Army, Navy, Air-force boot camp.
The training in video was easy on foreign guest.
We also do 18 mile march at the end of boot camp. of course there is ceremony the end of the march when soldiers get back from march similar to how Roscoe described.
However all training foreign friends have been through is worth something I could say and hope that experience could help whatever they do in future.

I am a Korean who's been through this kind of boot camp more than 40 years ago. I just want to mention one thing about dog tag. One of the main purposes of dog tag is when a soldier dies in combat. When a soldier dies in a combat, other solder near him takes off the dog tag and stick it between upper teeth and lower teeth. And the kick the lower jaw so that the tag can be stuck in the mouth of the dead soldier. The reason why they do this is that after the war when the dead soldier's body is found , they can identify whose body that is.

It really interested me since I'm interested in military history. I still have those tags and they mean the world to me because they were his. It is cool to know that other militaries did that as well! I may not be Korean, but I thank you for your service and I'm sure you did your country proud!

23:20 25:00 The reason waving the arm & jumping are to shake off gas particles attached to their body. 1. In my case, there were gas particles attached to my face, so I had to wash them with water, but I rubbed them with my hands and struggled for 10 to 20 minutes. 2. Each boot camp has a different style of gas chamber training, but in severe places, people take off their masks and sing two songs, so some people escape in the middle. 3. Most Koreans think that this training has less gas for youtube filming.

Went through Korean Army training, then went through KATUSA (ROK Army branch made for supporting US troops on base) training before getting a post at Humphreys. Your comment about making the trainees sing something to make sure they experience CS gas in the lungs fully was spot on. Actual vanilla boot camp made us do that. As for what I remember from training was the feeling of not having ANY alone time whatsoever. It's weird when they eventually give it back to you. That and the best advice for getting through my mandatory two years was some old officer telling us, "Imagine you're shooting a movie for two years. You're not the STAR, sometimes you are, but you're an actor in a movie and the script says you gotta do this in a certain way." That made me silence the part of my brain demanding a logical WHY for all the shit that came down the pipeline sometimes.

Because regardless era someone experienced, there is no easy sacrifice. Of course, someone would say it seems easy but an important thing here is that military service is tough because soldiers are sacrificing their delight and freedom for you and me that they've never met. One of a fellow recruit happened to got a gas mask with faulty canister, and he realized this the moment my group went into the chamber. He was in panic and asked DI to exchange the mask, his request was declined and sent back into ranks, probably because we all have to remove the mask anyway.
The recruit lost it, and tried to break through the door bypassing the DIs. Bad move honestly, He got beaten up dang hard and dragged out. Gave me and other recruits pretty good idea, what will happen if we try anything stupid. The memory still lingers even now.

Perhaps that recruit may have written about how he got beaten up by the Drill Sergeant and then perhaps he got reported. I don't know, I didn't write about it, because back then, I thought the DI could beat the shit out of us.
But honestly, even if he or I wrote about the beating incident, things are really easy to cover up in the army so I wouldn't be really effective. Not until one of the recruit dies of course... What happens in army, remains only within the army. I saw 3 cases of suicidal attempt; one of em was successful unfortunately, two cases of unarmed deserters when I was in service, but nothing was heard outside the society.

@@junpark8078 Norway is a much smaller country, so it`s probably easier for us to make a fuss about things that is not right than it is for people living in the U.S. That DI would have been fired in Norway is he had done the same thing to a recruit. We have tabloids in my country who would have written about this if it had happened here. We also have a pretty strong union for our recruits who deals with abuse from officers. We had a real asshole DI in our troop, and he got in trouble. He was not physical abusive, but unfair, and caused low morale amongst the soldiers. His superior officers did not like him, so our union guy reported him for verbally abuse, and he was reprimanded by his supervisor. He behaved after that. Where i was we had pretty high ranking officers who ran the place, and they were more mature than the DI`s who used to be pretty young and very immature. If the senior officers heard about any fuss from their DI`s, they took care of it. Our chief was a rear admiral (lower half) and he was pretty fair to us. For the most part i enjoyed my stay in the Navy. I served at a NATO base where we had a lot of foreign visits from other NATO countries. We had soldiers from the UK, and the U.S. visiting. I was even allowed to tour a huge American nuclear submarine that came to visit our base. The crew and officers aboard were very pleasant and nice.

As someone who did my years in the Korean military back in the 2000's I can assure you, you can finish it. The training part is difficult only for the first 2 weeks, then you body adjusts. Also having surrounded by others who bear it with you makes its a bit better. The hard part is the mental portion. Back in 2008 we had 2 stupid asian american reporters who thought it would be 'good' story to sneak into North Korea for an article. Because of those two, we had to write a will for our parents incase we died, and had to sleep in full gear for a month also on alert in case of a armed conflict with North Korea just because of those two selfish (excuse my language) bitches. Those reporters? They had the audacity of writing a book of their experience on probably patted themselves on the back not realizing they cost US and Korean citizens millions of tax dollars just to get them out. Cases like that when you don't know if you will ever see your family again and knowing no one will really know what kind of bs you have to go through makes the military life hard.

I can feel all the replies from former Korean military servicemen. I had the same experience in which the concentration of gas was at the level of 'I can't see anything,' and do push-ups and sang a song. Removing gasmask, filter, re-wearing, mounting other's filter, drinking water through a straw, etc..... LOL, I Don't miss that. And I can feel that the level of training in the video is not even close to the 'real' training. HOWEVER, considering the experience they're having and the fact that they're not Korean citizens. Also, it is ACTUALLY a TV show. They got threw pretty well. 😄
The purpose and lesson of the experience(it is not training, it's demonstration and experience) is that YOU WON'T OPERATE WITHOUT GASMASK after that moment. You will always have a gasmask no matter how much it makes you inconvenient.
