40 : 45 . 988 console time via local recording frame count using somewes's tool
Here is the explanation / logic / argument for considering this a 40 : 45 . 988 :
Time starts the frame the missile disappears and time ends the frame samus faces forward.
The time, if you count the video's frames is 40 : 46 . 00, that much is true...
but, the game doesn't run at the same frame rate as the video.
video=60fps
game=~60.09fps
The game frame has to happen before the video frame.
Of course, that goes for the beginning frame too, but I believe the tool takes this into account.
IMO, it's a pretty cool edge case on the ambiguity of the SNES frame rate not matching any common video capture rates lining up with the arbitrary nature of focusing on certain units of time such as the second.
The frame counter tool was made by a former SMB1 WR holder. I conferred with him to make sure I understood, and he said he would consider it a 40 : 45 . 9 but it depends on how the community would want to consider it.
The Super Metroid SRC leaderboard seems to have accepted it as a 40 : 45, for what it's worth. I have zero control over that board.
Regardless, it beats my own previous WR by like a 1/3 of a second, and that's something I could never be frustrated about. Hell, I was somewhat frustrated about getting a 40 : 46 . 8 a couple of months back, but I was still ecstatic about that!
Anyway, you can consider it a 40 : 46 . 00 if you like!
I still recall vividly when this game first came out. Was home from school friday evening, saw the commercial and was blown away by the graphics. Then my cousins invited us for an overnight, and my older cousin came home from work with a copy of this game. That saturday, we played through it in its entirety, using graph paper to record maps and noting places we couldn't get to. Was the best video game-related memory.
...there's an in-game map system though?
@@adre2194 It was easier to reference paper outside the game so one of the cousins can think and call out where to go while someone was playing and vice versa.
That’s beautiful
OMG!! The graph paper maps, I did the exact same thing (And still have them). I was really detailed, even mapping out graphling block locations, lolz :)
Ha! Man that's a great idea! As a kid it would've been fun making that and then using it while moving instead of constantly pausing the game to look at the in-game map.
I think we're incredibly lucky to see the world record rewritten so many times. Congrats bro
ikr, zoasty always amazes us.
I'm 43. Had the original console and never played this masterpiece until lately. After many hours and tons of close calls, i can truly appreciate your skill level. I missed out as a kid but am thoroughly enjoying playing it now.
Same here! I’m 48 and never played this as a kid. Finally beat it a few months ago and it’s still incredible all these years later.
It's been years since I got interested in the Super Metroid speedrunning scene, and seeing it still so healthy feels real nice
Super Metroid has always been a favorite game of mine. Maybe in the top 10. Still, to this day, it probably takes me 3ish hours to beat the game. Seeing these guys rip through it in 40 minutes is absolute insanity.
@@timhowland7103 I hear you. I'm not a speedrunner but have adapted their tricks to have more fun during my playthroughs. I always unequip the screw attack as soon as I get it, because the joy of mastery wall jumping is so powerful and intoxicating. I still languish my time in the game during each playthrough. I've done most boss routes (some of which need speedrunning strats), but even after enjoying pulling off the shortcuts; I still end up mostly doing 100% pickups for the quality of time I have messing around. :)
Super Metroid has been one of my favorite games since I was eight and I still love it so much and it feels so crazy that it is still such a popular game and I can see people online that are also super interested in a game that shaped my childhood. PS this game was the first game that I was legitimately wanting to come back to over and over every single day till I beat it!
The artistry of this game somehow even surpasses some contemporary games
Masterpiece
magic of the 16 bits
@@KristyKidman I thought it has 32-Bit 🙈
@@ChrolliForever no SNES is 16 bit
@@ChrolliForever looks better than most 32-bit games tho
Those left/right vertical climbs ending with the little morph ball that eloquently rolls over the last enemies head, with just enough space between the enemy and roof, gets me every time. So damn smooth, so damn classy, just so damn good!
We call that one the 'worst room in the game', it's a hard one
Watching this guy get gravity suit before varia suit was truly mind bending
Thats the fastest route for ya
I consider it a mad flex that he got a 3 round phantoon on the fastest time ever recorded so far.
years ago he took the RBO record by such a wide margin that he saved the animals and was still like three minutes ahead of the #2
@@FloydianHate SM history is a beautiful thing. Hotarubi is doing streams on YT of other games with almost no views. He was the OG beast at this game!
I love how a game from 1994 still has so much to offer even almost 30 years later
That Norfair section through to Ridley was so goddamn clean. Congrats!
I don't understand how these bosses died from so few hits. Mind blown. Well done!
Same! and the last skip I never seen before, before last boss
The way the Metroid saves the day always epic
hey hey now, she's not Metroid yet give it about 27 more years' worth of games
@@Nouxatar bruh, he means the baby metroid

I've never watched a speed run of this game before. This is one of my favorite games, and I've beaten it multiple times (my best time is 1:54 game timer). I saw Summoning Salt's video. My favorite part of this game is when the music plays after Samus receives the super weapon from the Metroid and you start kicking Mother Brain's ass. It was so much better to see her get rocked this fast by a constant barrage of hits. I know that isn't the most impressive feat of skill in this run by a long shot, but it was my favorite. Thanks Zoasty, for making one of my favorite games of all time even better.
Metroid was doing cool factor playable cutscenes before it was cool
Wow a new world record on any%. I was sincerely expecting many more years to go by before we could see something better than the previous run. Extremely well played Zoast! Keep on being awesome and impressing everyone!
He can't keep getting away with it!
(It never stops being a joy to watch your runs.)
Congratulations on improving your run, I somehow missed this 10 days ago!!!
I used to watch speedruns of this game all the time. Didn't play it for 4 or 5 years, just finished the game again yesterday and now I'm getting Super Metroid videos in my RUclips feed again.
They're always watching. Lol
hey Zoast. you're the reason i got into GDQ. i'll never forget your alternate grip for Tourian back in the day. just, bahahahaha, gorgeous! Keep slaying and inspiring us, Zoasty! Thank you!!!
You never cease to amaze me my friend . True professional !
Wow look at that two handed play on one side of the controller at 37:12 awesome playthrough!
見事なプレイでした!おめでとうございます!
I know in-game time doesn’t count anymore, but still, seeing that end screen at 00:27 is absolutely insane 🤯
I follow you since 2013-14 and you keep grinding for sub 40... this is by far the most incredible work i've ever seen ! Keep going Zoasty !!!
Insane, dude.
sad I was asleep to witness an any% wr live, but ecstatic to see it broken by you! What a run, with a fast mid fast, too!
I love this game
Amazing record. You're one of the greatest speedrunners of all time.
Congratulations Zoasty! Incredible run by a true Super Metroid professional!
thx for the upload and big GG for your new WR/PB !
「メトロイド、オモロイド:METROID, OMOROID(Metroid, super fun.)」
※Omoroi=Pronunciation and notation of "Omoshiroi (Interesting / fun)" in Kansai dialect.
"Metroid, Omoroid" is a catchphrase for a Super Metroid TV commercial in Japan.
It is expressed as a line of Samus Aran.
Legendary run. It would seem that it is no longer possible to go faster, but Zoast breaks the record every time. Gongrats!
Getting the varia suit well AFTER the gravity suit alone blew my mind. Well done!
Man, Zoasty, it's been a few years since I've seen your previous WRs, and it always amazes me how you can still crush this game, like an absolute unit. Congratulations on your current record, mate, you earned it, and good luck at the upcoming coop run at SGDQ! :)
Former
@@bradystafford7654 Yeah, saw that yesterday.
Congrats broheim, glad to see the competition is heating up again just had to wait a bit.
I had no idea maridia could be done that fast! amazing run!
I've watched it a few times now.
Super impressive Zoast.
I always loved how Samus ship was like the bounty hunters in critters
grats zoast on the WR it stood for a long time your a total legend!
Glad to see your not only still running the game but also on top, much respect man!
After all these years I still love seeing you lower the record. GG
Very nice. Amazing how easy speedrunners make it look. Congrats.
Congrats Zoast, happy for you dude!
Never PB by too much 🍻
Maximum content
Grande Mestre
Foi um prazer sem medidas assistir ao seu vídeo. Parabéns!!!
Came back here again after seeing the new oats wr a few days ago to make sure I remembered to like the video. I did! =)
This guy out here getting WR with a three round?! Throwing for content again! (Congrats man…can’t wait for what’s next.)
Awesome run! Congrats, Zoast!
The title is very clear, and I'm watching this weeks after, but I still feel like just typing "good luck" anyway. I know it may seem strange, but I do it out of habit... which, I think, does make a marked difference in the long run: What I mean is I will always impart positive energy on speedrunners as a mostly subconscious, trained reaction. Much like the button presses of the runners themselves.
So, the best of luck in this run, Zoast, I feel like you've got this! :)
Love the Ridley fight and the minute leading up to it. The tricks look so good.
Mind blown by all the time saving strategies and techniques
No strange pitched singing.. No annoying twitch alerts... Thank you for that. Just perfect playing
No idea how you run so fast even in morph ball, so many tricks. Congratulations!
watching this and occasionally glancing at the way he holds the SNES controller makes my carpal tunnel flare up.. props for insane skills!
Congrats!
This put a smile on my face
Zoast breaking world records like bread it's just amazing, keep the good work!
It kept looking like one of those extra energy tanks wouldn't be necessary, but you kept dropping just below that threshold. Well done. Probably one of the most impressive things ever done by someone wearing flannel pants.
you need to have 3 full tanks of energy when Mother Brain hits you with the Hyper Beam or you will die. Speedrunners like Zoasty truly do get the bare minimum number of energy tanks to beat the game
Congratulations! Very cool seeing you run this again
Yoooooo congrats dude! Love this game to death
This is actually impressive! That Shine Spark maneuver to get to Norfair was crazy.
GGs dude! Keep ripping through those WRs and PBs
Kudos man deserved, a lot of hard work into these pixels you have put.
I hope a new contender shows up soon.
Whaaaaat! Nice man! Can't wait to find a good time to chill and watch this full run.
I've been watching Zoast's speedruns since 20 freaking 17. 6 long years, and I'm still amazed.
Shit's crazy.
thanks!
I was not aware of these sub 41s, congrats zoast!
That Phantoon, missed a few small jumps and still got WR. Good stuff Zoast!
Just waiting for that sub 40 barrier to fall next! Amazing as always, Zoast!
Congrats Zoast!!!
decent run
still passed 20 years ago and this fuckin game it the best way to pass Sunday afternoon..
i had no idea this run included a 3 round phantoon LOL. What a run, really fun to watch.
Congrats!! That is a spectacular run! 🤘😎 Heck yea Z!!
That Ridley fight was near perfect. Just two shots lost to tail whips. Amazing to pull that off in the middle of a good run.
Holy, welcome back and the return of the beef with behe. This is such a beauty of a game
OMG!!! I have to say that was the greatest fast completion I have ever seen! Super Metroid completed in like 45 minutes, with no need for the Space jump, Screw attack and just like a short need of maybe 11 missiles, a few super n power bombs to open a few doors, but no need to get the whole lot!!!
I have to praise you! You were superb! You even gained the Gravity suit way before the Varia suit! N no need for the grappling beam!
I think Mother Brain can always be beaten after hitting her with a few 40 to 60 hits of charge beam!
I can say a few more things like how you managed to make that water jump & reached the missile, n without the grappling beam when going towards the wrecked ship, n quickly beat that 1 eyed boss there! (1 question, did you beat that red boss that turns in to a skeleton)?
WELL DONE!
Nice run! Congrats!
Absolute madlad, you're insane Zoast!
Crazy! Been watching you since the good old days when GDQ was on the couch
Samus ordered a pizza, went to end the space pirates and got back home before the delivery guy arrived.
Congratulations! This was amazing to watch.
Amazing how much you remember and how fast this was done great job 👍
Much appreciation to the speed running community for keeping these masterpieces alive.
The run is superb. The Randy Savage with a PowerGlove profile pic is legendary.
Just finish my first run in super Metroid last weekend, I am honestly speechless now after watching this
The BEST wall jumping I've ever seen!!! Congratulations!!! :)
Nunca te rindas, y sigue haciendo nuevos récords la verdad me encanta este juego ya me pase sus 7 veces
I remember my grandparents letting me stay home from school to get this game the day it dropped. I was 9 or 10 This was awesome to watch .
Good job and very impressive ! You got first on the leader board!
13:00 stretching his hands!
Congratulations Zoast with the most. Amazing feat, you reached the fourty mark.
I was a Japanese, but was impressed with your play. Talk about the act of God👍
Congrats zoasty!!
Great run, man! Always so tense watching the last 10 mins! Good $#|+!
Best player of all time. Gg Zoast
I remember saving up my summer part time job money to buy this game in 1994 (?) when it first came out. It was well worth it. Such a great game, and happy to see it lives on in the speed run community.
Keep up the good work zoasty
That is some crispy movement
Only like 2 or 3 slip-ups in jumping, phenomenal.
I knew it wouldn’t be long after your last PB! Congrats man!
I just need to shave off 1 hour 50 mins from my best time and I'll be right on your tail Zoasty. Great WR
Incredible man you are a legend.
This guy utilizes every technique almost flawlessly just short of glitches that completely f@&k with the code. I had uncovered a few just by chance but I learned like 3 more from just watching this video.
Congrats zoast! You did it again
