- After overhauling a Nag1 Trans it produced a P0741 on the road test, after pulling the trans for the 2nd time, i decided to air check the converters and found the first 2 rebuilt converters were bad right out of the box. I show this because these converters have a clutch pack inside and with an Input shaft the converter can be air checked. Thanks for watching. Happy 4TH of July.
Thanks, Gary. I don't know if you have a relationship with the rebuilder of those bad units, but please get this detailed info to them. They might even need to essentially do a recall on their end. If you think this was a real pain for you to resolve, just imagine what it would do to a DIYer...I'd be dead in the water. And some suppliers are not what I'd call 'retail friendly', so you are in a better position to get noticed.
Wonderful video! I do drivability. And it's hard enough to figure out the original problem and repair it, let alone have to diagnose the parts that we use that we trust. QC obviously important because it needs to go back to the customer 100%.
It's frustrating to have an issue. But when you get a new part and have issues, let alone multiple new parts that are defective before you even install them, will make you pull your hair out and start doubting your skills.
Really enjoy your videos. Watched your teardown and rebuild of Dodge 62TE. Had to subscribe. Keep up the great work, you are helping more than you know.
Good explanation on the issue, I noticed on the 2 faulty units there appears to be a lot of side movement on the input shaft when applying the air pressure
Gary I feel sorry for you those bad new parts really suck such a disaster but you've got her fixed and you diagnosed it right
What a bummer to get two bad parts in a row! Especially with a new client, they’re lucky to be referred to you, hopefully they’re understanding and keep coming back with new jobs. Great video Gary!
Yes, I explained everything to them, Just finished up another transmission for them.
Great information Gary, I would have never thought to check that. I will check every 722 convertor from now on, thanks again.
I now do the same, Can't believe 2 bad in a row
@@GaryFerraro that never used to happen, by the way, what scan tool do you use?
Thanks for the great video. What a pain! The customer is lucky to get such a honest professional shop to take on the job and finish it responsibly. I'd still be a bit hot under the collar with the wasted time, but it's also very fascinating and valuable information.
Well presented thank you very much
great catch, thanks good luck and happy 4th, joe and misty
I recognize that blue convertor and those problems, hope they took care of you on some parts. Nicely done on the shirt sleeve😂
Watching from Rhode Island-fun/interesting stuff for the car enthusiasts among us-thanks!
I have right now problem with tcc code, and two converters from recon same color blue one i changed during rebuild. Can't still beat this problem...I hope so, your video will help me to figure out with same way, how to check TC...Thank you so much for sharing problem!!! I hope so it's same case...But if it's really converter, then I will go to recon company and kick their ASS for bad job!! 😤 It's ridiculous...
But I have also in my mind, that maybe my tcm no good too..The car is dodge charger 2018 and besides tcc code it has code u0402-00, and transmission always in limp mode and traction control light always ON...Going to figure out!! THANK YOU for information!! Keep going!!
you have a tcc code too?
Did you ever figured out what your problem was?
Great video, very informative! Thank you for posting
Very good video, thanks, Gary.
Good job every day we encounter new problem
Thanks ¡ that help me to figurate what is going on in my trans. I got a p0740 code and i believe it could be the torque c.
I’ve seen more problem with converters now then ever before. I generally only use oem fr 6L and 6R 80’s
Great vid thank you very much!👍
Getting bad new parts these days are a norm! But when so much labor is involved before finding out part is bad will kill you!
Sometimes you think you may have diagnosed it wrong,
Used to work at a really bust transmission shop and seen 4 bad converters in a row many times usually Ford Converters from transtar for 5r55w
The 2 bad ones were Transtar, used a CVC
All the sho0s in th8s area sto00ed using transparent and switched to precision
We just had same issue. Recon converter sold to us from transtar 3 weeks ago. Date code 5/23/23...
741 code?
@GaryFerraro yes. And then we received a second converter dated 2021. Same thing
We installed a consolidated one. It checked out good. Thanks to your video you saved us from tearing transmission apart. Sad thing is transtar is still selling this junk and they even have it red noted in there computers
Something changed in my NAG-1 Durango after I changed the fluid and filter. I could not get a clear reading of fluid level with the dipstick made for the NAG-1. So, I drove it hundreds of miles, believing it had the correct fluid level. I've since began using the black plastic dipstick for Mercedes, and I can read that one fine. But the damage is done. The transmission drives fine, shifts fine, but it now has roughness with *any* throttle. Coasting, it's smooth. The more load I put on the thing (driving up hills 45 mph+) , the rougher it feels and it's not as strong as it was. It's like I need wide open throttle on some hills, where I didn't before. Did I damage the torque converter? My fluid level is known good with the 722.6 dipstick. Thanks. 123,000 miles.
have you scanned this to see if any codes are present. if it is lack of power, could be something with engine
@@GaryFerraro I scanned it and it showed the modulation pressure as erratic. Sky high beyond any meaningful number, at times. I couldn't find an issue with desired and actual slip. Took the vehicle to a transmission rebuild shop, and told them what I found with the scanner, and that I had run it with questionable fluid level. At first they said it "drove ok". Then after driving again, they said it was probably the front diff, and maybe a motor mount as well (you can't access those with the diff in place), and a price of $4400. I told them I can't do it (didn't trust diagnosis based on how things occurred), and picked it up. I bought a low-mileage diff myself and installed it. No change at all. Exactly the same. I had changed the fluid using Maxlife Multi-Vehicle that states ok for NAG-1, if that makes a difference. Thanks.
@@sp1068 so if you drive this normally it's works ok?
@@GaryFerraro As soon as I put my foot against the gas pedal and give it any throttle at all, I can feel the roughness. The more throttle I give it, the rougher it feels and it lacks power on hills now. When driving on a flat highway doing 55, just giving light throttle to maintain speed, it's not nearly as noticeable. But as soon as I approach a hill and it's more under load, or pass, I can really feel the vibration. Wide open throttle feels really rough and it can be heard. The engine runs fine and isn't missing.
@@GaryFerraro There's no codes stored at all.
2 recon converts and a cvc which is good just guessing
You need to get a different supplier for TC. You'll end up going to the poor-house pulling the transmission 3 or 4 times with every rebuild. Who eats the cost?
Hello dear
I have hummer h3 2008 4*4
And i have hard shifting (slipping)
I checked opd 2 the code is p0717 p0716
And i see the last video for you about grounding 4L60e
But i cant know how to grounding the wire so pleas help me to solve this issue
Thank you for your all videos
❤❤❤
I would need your vin number to see if you have a TCM, some Hummers do not have a TCM
@@GaryFerraro gently remind
I have a 2008 Ford Explorer. It drives fine in reverse but when I'm in drive it doesn't seem to pass second gear and takes a long time to get to 40-50 mph. I have an orange wrench indicator light. Leading up to it there was a flare up between shifting from second to third at about 2000-2500 rpms. I'm being told a few different things by different mechanics. One said I need a new Transmission. Another said I need to change out my valve body. And third said none of those just need to change solenoids. All without looking mind you. I did get one error code for the TFT sensor error code P0710 I believe. I'm in Suffolk. Want to break down my issue for video content? Also fix the issue while in the process? It's really expensive and not sure if its worth it. The explorer has 118k miles. Thanks.
Wondering if it's making a 1-3 shift. What scanner are you using to pull codes? Where are you located in suffolk are you? I'm in West Hempstead
@@GaryFerraro What's a 1-3 Shift? Skipping second? If so its a no. I'm sure the mechanic used an OBD2? Idk but that's what was on his paper when I looked at it. I'm in Port Jeff. I just want an honest opinion and unfortunately I haven't gotten it yet. Can we make this happen?
Hi mate this might seem like a dumb question but I'm not a transmission specialist, how does the fluid get in and out of the converter is it through those two ports where you applied air ,thanks mate just wanted to know .
SO, did you fix the problem with CVC converter??
yes it did
where ti buy overhaul kit?
Where are you located?
Those 2 leaky converters; just unacceptable. Try and get some answers from the company that produced them.
the customer is QC these days.
Hi Gary, please wear gloves.
Wow, that was a terrible experience. What did your supplier say?
You lost all your profit re doinging your labor on those 2 bad torque converters
They don't say much, very big company, i deal with my rep and i hope he tells them when in meetings
@@GaryFerraro Just out of curiosity.... Who is the company that rebuilds the converters. Not the supplier. I have talked to Mark, the owner of Sun valley transmissions, in California and he actually has explained to me what causes this issue. He came up with his own solution to this problem.
Transtars converter company called Recon Converters
@@GaryFerraro It looks like your parts come from Transtar, the blue converters are their main line that they promote. I think the silver colored one looks like it came from CVC. I’ve bought from them for years, their factory is nearby, I actually go to their plant and pick them up wherever I need them. I think they build a really good converter, I’ve never had any problems out of them.
