    Personally, I'm looking forward to MagnaCut, and glad it's Survive's latest offering! Can't wait for the GSO-4 I ordered in this steel! Keep up the good work!

    Everything I've seen shows magnacut is the 💩.
    Definitely a steel that will be very popular over the next few years.
    Already pre-ordered a bark river bushcraft scout in it.

    Saw the email and immediately ordered a GSO-3 to go with the 6 I recently received. I'm excited about Magnacut.

    Didn't see the option for MagnaCut for the 4.7s, are they going to be available in it at production time?
    Also I how you guys enjoy the holidays coming up. You deserve a nice rest and get away

      Hello and great question. The GSO-4.7 blades are already back from heat treat and will be working their way through finishing shortly. Because of this and the fact that we already have plenty of other projects on our plate, we hadn't planned to make more GSO-4.7 blades in Magnacut at this time. Our offerings in CPM-3V are a fantastic option and definitely still our benchmark for a hard working user tool.
      Happy holidays to you and your family as well! -Guy

    Sucks to have come crossed the issues you’ve now been opening up about.

      Yeah, the situation is definitely not ideal. Seeing how large these anomalous pockets can be is quite alarming. It hurts our production momentum, running into things like this, but I would rather hang onto these things over turning a blind eye, and sending it out to you guys. You deserve better than that. I guess time will tell if the mill will entertain a warranty now.

    Why Magna-Cut on Bark River Knives rust?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  Год назад

      I'm not certain? If the steel is tempered using the high side of the temper curve, 900-ish degree range, that can reduce corrosion resistance. They also do a lot of belt grinding work, the spots could just be contaminants ground into the surface of the knife from that process. They utilize several different steels, so that could be it.

    How does magnacut do for a survival knife? And more specifically batoning

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  2 года назад +1

      While CPM-Magnacut has nowhere near the same impact toughness (resistance to impact fracturing) of something like 3V, it is plenty tough enough for a small to medium survival knife. It brings to the table a great balance of high relative toughness, corrosion resistance, and edge holding, which is fairly unique to this new CPM-Magnacut grade. It is much tougher than 20CV and other high alloy stainless steels we've used in the past and outside of a couple of fringe circumstances, we never saw any issues with those. All in all, I believe CPM-Magnacut is going to be one of the best knife steels available for most users. -Guy

    Gentleman, I'm curious how 3V stacks up to Magnacut? I have some TSK knives ordered in 3V but they're meant to be sweaty hiking knives on a through hike in a few years - will you be offering TSKs in Magnacut? Thoughts for a guy like myself that enjoys a smaller knife that handles neglect well? I have a 4.7 and 5.5 on order also and wonder your thoughts on that use case?
    Further, as S!K moves into manufacturing, is there an idea to have a stock of models on hand? I've enjoyed learning about new products but I'm accustomed to the older lead times and would hate to miss out on something interesting because I'm not on the 'gram or otherwise slow to respond with social media.
    Just inviting some of your thoughts! Thanks for the content and for a great product.

      Great question! CPM-3V is still king of the hill for that great combination of toughness(resistance to impact fracturing) and edge holding. For situations where a knife is regularly subjected to impact stresses and hard use, that material is pretty hard to beat. While it can spot/stain, it contains enough alloy that the material structure will never be compromised due to weather exposure.
      That being said, the new CPM Magnacut is a great option for a lot of applications, especially in small to medium knives. It still has a relatively high level of toughness, edge holding that is functionally similar or slightly better than CPM-3V, and a very high level of corrosion resistance. Because of those very balanced properties, I believe you are going to see us using this material as a "meat and potatoes" option for most of our smaller offerings moving forward. We will still be doing special runs of other steels like S90V and a few of the European super alloys, because they bring something unique to the performance table. -Guy

    What is the target hardness you are aiming for?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  2 года назад +3

      We still have some experimenting and process fine tuning to do over at Peters' Heat Treat but my feeling is for our knives, probably something in the range of 61-61.5 HRC is what we'll be aiming for. I believe that will net us the best overall balance of characteristics for the type of tools we make. We could probably get away with a little harder but doing so pulls the tempers down into the 300-350 degree range, which is really not very hot at all. Those low tempering temperatures pose some challenges, especially at any kind of production scale, with straightening, blade processing, and any sort of aesthetic surface treatments. On the user side of things, those really low temps mean a person can more easily distemper an edge without realizing it.
      The most stable formula and what would most likely have the best edge holding, just based on previous experience, would be to shoot for a temper in the 900-1,000 degree range. Doing so would diminish the seemingly bulletproof level of corrosion resistance though, which is what I find to be one of the most novel characteristics of this steel. So needless to say we won't be doing that. Mark my words though, if this steel starts really going mainstream, I'm betting you a lot of the big companies will go that route.
      Getting the perfect recipe for the most desirable result is certainly a balancing act but rest assured, we'll get it right before we start getting Magnacut knives out into the world. -Guy

    i’d love to get that DLC coating on that 4.7 swedge!

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  2 года назад +1

      I wish getting that done was a bit easier! Most of the good tooling grade coatings either have a decent amount of heat involved or they don't turn out to be a very aesthetic finish. Most of the "DLC" coatings we see out on the market are actually a PVD coating, which is less durable and does not provide the level of corrosion resistance we would like to see. The research and testing continues! -Guy

    So those pre-ordered 4.5s that were on the sharpening bench November 4th? Those going to be shipping out soon? Still waiting for my shipping email.

      Yes, you can have your order changed by emailing info@surviveknives.com. • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  2 года назад +1

      We still have a few items to knock off the production schedule before we'll be swinging back around to a GSO-4.5 in Magnacut. We're also still working on a good DLC option. Most of the best tooling grade DLC coatings, at least available to us here in the US, go on at a very high temperature. They would distemper a steel like Magnacut. These lower temperature PVD coatings look pretty nice but they are much less durable and don't provide much in the way of corrosion resistance. It makes us question the value of offering it, since it is still pretty expensive. Cerakote on the other hand provides a very high level of protection, especially in trouble areas like under handles. Does it scratch and wear off of the blade portion over time? Yep, it sure does, but it is also relatively inexpensive to strip and recoat when you get tired of the Mandalorian look. -Guy

      @@Surviveknives Thanks for the great response. You talked me out of the DLC. I like to use the spine of my knife to help make tinder from dry wood so anything that rounds that edge is concerning. Same with a ferro notch. What are your thoughts about those concerns?

      Eventually, yes. Right now the supply of Magnacut is very limited, with each run selling out pretty quickly. We got our hands on a fair amount but we're not sure if the TSK will make the cut this go around.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  2 года назад +2

      The times WERE ridiculous, we agree, but that isn't the case anymore. While we're still cleaning up the last of the backlog we ran into while working with contract manufacturers, the wait time on newer projects will be just a few months or less. Recently we've even had some in stock knives, that shipped in just a few days. The decision to bring all of our manufacturing in house was no small matter but we're getting this ship steered in the right direction now.
