I think this set is honestly the weirdest when it comes to card evaluation. I think a number of them are automatically dismissed for one reason or another or put into a very narrow box. It'll be interesting to see how people build around a lot of the undervalued members
Yes I think most cards a very good in a narrow box. There are a lot of cards that almost become MVPs in some of my decks but would be horrible in any other of similar colors.
I mean isnt that the best part of commander? Build whatever you want! Give the weird, wacky, and forgotten commanders a try and you can have a lot of fun! Do I play my Zada, Hedron Grinder deck because it's good? OF COURSE NOT I play it because its ridiculous and gives me an excuse to make ridiculous goblin noises while I fumble any attempt to combo off and win.
I'm just happy that Lukka is the backside, Since I run a 5 color creature only commander deck, with Umori as a partner, being able to run Lukka is possible since the front side is a creature.
Well, I was building a Lorehold deck with the dragon and it's pretty strong, but it's not suited for Edh for the land destruction and neither Cedh, because it's slow. You have Restore Balance, Armageddon and Cataclysm, the fun white cards. For extra combats, I found: Resurgence,Relentless Assault, Seize the Day, Savage Beating, World at war, Waves of Aggresion. The things is,I think you can cast very powerful things with overload, like Mizzix Mastery. I think it could be placed in B tier (sorry for my English haha)
I mean I feel like beledros should be bumped up to s tier simply because while prismari can just tap artifacts for instants and sorceries one good nuke on field and it's pretty much useless whereas when beledros dies you're in black/green so you know that you have ways to get her back for like dirt cheap where as red/blue really doesn't any artifact recursion. Idk that's just me😅
Rionya's pretty crazy, being mono red is kind of an advantage for creating a wincon with damage and getting everything out for sure, and you can easily ramp her out before turn 5. And once she's out it's easy to already have a humble defector out and play a 1 mana draw spell and draw 5 the very next turn, or have precursor golem and draw 7, even moonveil dragon draws 3. The best creatures afaik are 5 cmc or less, so you can play goldspan dragon or rapacious dragon and ramp out 4 mana the turn after, that's almost double your mana, and since rionya is 2 red fanatic of mogis is even better and terror of the peaks is just wild. If you can manage to get 2-3 turns with her out and you manage to draw into more draw, which at least in my deck is a tiny bit inconsistent rn, she just pops off by setting up her next turn more and more. She's a super version of any mono red or colorless creature. I don't really know of any mono red commander that can ramp out and draw and do anything as much as she can from almost only her being out, and it's easy before turn 5. But no she's not really witherbloom lol.
The production value on your videos is always top notch. I really appreciate the fact that you planned the video out instead of just shooting from the hip like a lot of other tier lists.
oh boy, all the disclaimers. i feel you mitch. people take it so personally when you rank their favorite new commander too low. myself, i won't be doing it anymore. just a headache.
I liked your recent cmdr reviews, EDH Deckbuilding, especially your deck built around Felisa's second ability which it seems you are the only person that noticed it.
@@noobtuber10 I'm leaning towards a "relics" build. Lots of cheap artifacts to speed up the deck, along with some choice equipment so that I can cast game ending spells.
Gyome is a lot more interesting then he seems IMO. I specifically plan on building an artifact creature deck, taking advantage of the absurd number of food tokens you can produce and sac for value, either with cards like Bontu or KCI.
Valentin and Lisette will be right at home in a Ghave deck in the 99. Each would synergize well, especially if you have a way to turn creatures into mana or life.
Adrix and Nev is absolutely an insane commander. I have built armies of dozens, sometimes even over 100, creatures from having almost nothing on the board in a matter of only a few turns. I don't even have a fully optimized Adrix and Nev deck, it's just so naturally powerful that I didn't need to overtune it for my play group's average power level. Bought an extra Adrix and Nev to through into my Yarok deck. Can't wait to see the interactions.
I will end up swapping Beladros to the head of the precon and leaving the other commander in the deck. Was considering going for more ways to use my life as a resource but I am still working out the kinks
Reading the comments. Mitch, you got your work cut out for you. Everyone loves your ranking system, so now you gotta go back and rank all Ravnica legends. All Ravnica. Legends. Put on a big pot of coffee and let's jump into it! 🤣
I've come to love Adrix and Nev more than I thought I would. I bought the Quandrix commander deck assuming I would build around Esix because it is interesting, but I was rather disappointed. After making a few upgrades and switching back to Adrix and Nev, my eyes have been opened to just how powerful they can be. All it takes is a 2 CMC spell in the form of Double Major, target Adrix and Nev, and now, you get 8 times the tokens! That's insane! S-tier is definitely fitting, and for the most part, I agree with the rest of the tier list
Blex and ezzaroot channeler with a sac outlet and a way to make a green on cast/death is infinite storm/etb/life gain/death. As a combo commander, I’d put Blex way higher than D tier.
It's funny because when I chose to get the Prismari commander precon deck, I thought since it was the cheapest by far that it would be the weakest. Plus, Zaffi wasn't doing it for me. But now I have it rebuilt to synergize with Veyran and I've been cackling like a madman for weeks lmao
I made a Velomachus deck where I just keep taking multiple combat steps! It's pretty neat and I have yet to actually lose a game with it! There's like a 20% chance that I just kill someone via commander the turn I play him and it makes him a ticking timebomb that no one I play with expects!
I'm so stupid excited. I got the r/u and g/u precons smashing them together and having the storm sire as my commander, added a rikku, jadzi, and eye of the storm. Going to have SO many shenanigans
If on a pure competitive level, Dina probably is the strongest. Part of a 2 card combo with exquisite blood, and can be a sacrifice outlet for protean hulk to otk the table. Fill out the rest of the deck with tutors and reanimators to get the hulk. Buuuut that is only under the assumption you want to open a mortgage to play Magic
One thig that forgot to mention about those dual commanders creature/sorcery is that you can choose never put it into the command zone again, there is a lot of cards that can bring it back from graveyard as creature so you can play it again as sorcery, ej. Tourtured existence, Malevolent Awakening, Oversold Cemetery, etc.
I get that 7 mana seems like a lot in a vacume, but beledros is in green he's coming out maybe 1 turn after if not the same turn as galazeth and he'll be getting mana advantage going faster because he doesn't require much setup
That's a really good review of all the possibile commanders of Strixhaven , I really thought Beledros would have been S tier , but it makes sense given the mana value /cmc
Definitely agree with the jadzi, I just started to make her for commander, she's really powerful and would definitely be better with less mana, I found that trying to make a storm deck with her is both fun and a pain just from the amount of triggers
Well, great video to start with. Lot of good takes. Now to counterpoint. First, I am a Simic/Quandrix Stan so I acknowledge my opinion is skewed. But I am really looking forward to using the new fractal and the twins in my Simic Commander deck. It is already based around creating a bunch of tokens, specifically mimics of other creatures. Esix and the Twins will add to my ability to do that. Additionally, I feel that this is the answer to the Blood Avatar. I will be able to go just as wide as that deck, if not wider and wait for my opening to take the kill with unblockable creatures, or Ruxa making all my bears (oozes and fractals mostly) hit as though they weren't blocked. So I think maybe you didn't give them as fair a shake as you should have, but I agree this is your opinion and you have the right to it, and to be wrong if you choose. Ha! 😄
Mitch, I really liked this episode. It's always nice to hear what commanders are the dominating forces in a set, but please don't stop doing your Golden Toilet awards and Golden Pig awards either! This is just a nice new addition to the goodness that is the Golden Pig and Golden Toilet!
Willowdusk is so insane. You can pump a creature regularly by 4-10 each turn. Also you can pay a lot of life and then pump a lifelink creature to get it all back. This is so good....
Honestly idk about awaken the blood avatar rating. For casual he's definitely gonna be strong and I pretty much have all the cards to build him except the Mana base, super excited for the mardu politics
Losheel should get a little more love, if you get flash for your artifact creatures you can draw cards on other players turns as well, plus Mono White is finally giving us more options for card draw. Codie is a fun commander, would love to experiment with it.
I think silverquil could be a tier because of how good it is with token putting a counter on all you creatures every turn! Plus the political value is great
I would bump Beledros up to S. Some of the combos are just insane, such as vilis to draw 10 cards when you trigger its second ability, and exsanguinate in 4 player games. Also, I would move Extus down as double sided cards aren’t great as commanders. Maybe switch beledros and Extus and that would be about it.
I think Alibou is a bit more potent than initial estimates might indicate. The way it's worded, it looks like one could just use loads of mana rocks tap them for whatever other spells one is casting, and have a single thopter swing in to trigger the fireball, which is made massive by the amount of tapped mana rocks. Then, if one were to strap something like Grafted Exoskeleton to Alibou before triggering the damage, it would have infect applied to it and be more than capable of one-shotting someone. That seems more like a B-tier or possibly even A-tier to me.
I’d have made Alibou a B. It’s got a lot of scry, direct damage, and accelerates artifact creatures. Enough to put it top tier? Not really, but solid enough to build an aggressive artifact deck around. Anything over scry 3 is so good for making plans for future turns.
Nice vidéo! I don't see how Rootha can be so low, while in a deck mixing cantrips and huge spell, the recursion in copying spell for 5 seems above Willowdusk
While Plargg isn't the best Augusta is the better half, which means all exert cards can do their ability every single time, which is incredibly powerful with glory bringer which kills a creature every time, or Combat Celebrant with infinite combat steps
Gonna have to disagree w you Mitch in Kianne//Imbraham - Imbraham + infinite mana and thassa's oracle is a win. It's got the right colors to go infinite quite easily and is a low enough cmc commander to pull it off. Just my 2 cents. Keep doing what your doing boss. Love your content!!!
I'm gonna try Uvilda/Nassari in my Animar deck, because Nassari sounds pretty sweet in that case, especially with the mana reduction of Animar being factored in.
Extus's front side I feel like can make some fun decks that abuse the getting creatures to hand, although it might be in the more expensive and sweatier side, an example is with Extus, Worthy Cause and dockside extortionist netting 5-6 treasures ( you can just stack the triggers and loop it). There are also ways to use Birgi and other cheaper cards like Impulsive Pilferer to blast through your deck with low-cost red draw cards to storm off or have a lot of sacrifice triggers. Although it's a debate if it's better than the back which I'm not too sure is fun having to sack everyone's creatures all the time.
I honestly don't find the backside that impressive and even with the cost reduction not that great. To consistently play it for low mana you would've to sac 3 creatures the first time and another one for each aditional cast. Board wipes and counters say hello. Sure you play it in an aristocrates shell but even there it seems kinda meh.
He still gives the hofri player a token of the stolen card though because it just needs to go "a graveyard." So mob rule for 4 things, swing at an opponent, sac em, get 4 token copies, get up to 4 etbs, pass still works and is veryyy powerful. Easily kill an opps creature(s) then get your own copy although they'll get the original card back in their graveyard.
Nice to see Lorehold (not Boros) doing cool things that don’t involve combat. Having said that, Awaken the Blood Avatar and Codie are the most interesting commanders in this set for me and the ones I’m looking to build. Oh, and Simic are as boring as always.
I think esix is an really interesting commander with an unique ability and for sure a bit of fresh air for simic. With the others i agree. Powerfull ofc but nothing new or even slightly exciting. Just more ramp and value.
To be fair, if Tivash gave you a demon right away, it'd go infinite with Soul Warden type effects. I don't think there's any of those effects in mono black, but it could be kinda broken in orzhov and golgari decks, idk.
I dont think i could put a single one of the cards from the S tier here into even the A tier realistically, maybe B from some of them and a couple C, but a good few of the ones from the A could easily be S, otherwise though i think the list is pretty alright
I don’t think the mana cost should put Beledros in the A tier vs the S tier. It’s in Black/Green so you have rituals and ramp to easily get to 7 mana before turn 7.
I think the last 2 Simic in A should be S, the reasoning for the high cost I think massively counters out with a huge factor, the colour green, ramp is so easy to pull off in green, Izzet... Not so much lol
I think you're slightly underrating Felisa. Yes she takes some amount of set up but if you take into account ways to store up your +1/+1 counters like the ozolith or modular ability you can get a really explosive burst of power on board. Not sure if its enough to bump her up a tier but imo she is significantly stronger than some of the other B tiers.
Now, I’m still unfamiliar with every card in the game. Are there any other cards that support the idea of a Gyome “meme” deck, that don’t specifically create Food tokens? 33:50 Yeah, I know. I got swept by such a Storm deck. Twice. All of my loathing.
The majority of the extra combat cards can only work if you cast them in your main phase. If you cast them during combat off of velomachus that don't do anything.
Having Tivash trigger on each instance of life gain might be too strong as it would go infinite with any of the soul sisters. So perhaps at the beginning of each end step would have been better and fairer.
Imma actually argue for Tvash, in the B tier. One the dies to removal maybe you get blow out argument is not as viable I think, you are not as blown out since you still get the life and invest no mana plus this is non-threatening enough to probably slip under the radar. Sure if they suddenly get a 20/20 then it is a problem but most of the time that just isn't gonna happen since you are rarely so far ahead. Take that with the fact it is not just big tokens but little incidental 1/1 and 2/2 that you can then feed into a sac engine for zulaport cut throat type effect and Tvash is stealthy more powerful than he seems.
I built a Codie deck just because my name is Kodie and it felt like the right thing to do
Codie brings that bde.
Wait so do you also make instants and/or sorceries cascade into each other?

Gonna have to disagree w you Mitch in Kianne//Imbraham - Imbraham + infinite mana and thassa's oracle is a win. It's got the right colors to go infinite quite easily and is a low enough cmc commander to pull it off. Just my 2 cents. Keep doing what your doing boss. Love your content!!!
If Tivash triggered whenever you gained life it would be super easy to break it with Ajani's Presence effects.
Veyran definitely a major player ut of this set. Already building a cedh deck around her. Should be GG pretty quickly! 😎
At least we found out what happened to London from suite life she became a vampire and joined silverquill lol
Excited to build an esix based on the precon
Blex doesn't benefit rats tho? So I'm confused why Relentless Rats was brought up.
I love cheap but impactful commanders that aren’t powerful enough to get focused. I’m currently working on a Kylian list.
I pulled awaken a few days ago and im looking forward to building around it
Dos Zaffai give you all of the riders when you cast a 10 or greater spell?
Yes you would get all of the effects
I think Killian is an A, reducing 2 for any aura, instant and sorcery that targets a creature is pretty good for a voltron deck
One correction with Hofri is that he returns the exiled cards to the owner's graveyards, so builds that rely on theft will not work that well.
I think an imbraham deck wouldn't suck. It seems like a good way to tutor for spells and keep your options open
I can't believe you put velomachus in C tier. I have a great commander deck with him.
Mila may not be the best commander but the Mila deck I built is probably one of my favorite decks I have
To be fair, if Tivash gave you a demon right away, it'd go infinite with Soul Warden type effects.
Not sure if its enough to bump her up a tier but imo she is significantly stronger than some of the other B tiers.
personally i use felisa as and anti-board whipe card
Now, I’m still unfamiliar with every card in the game. Are there any other cards that support the idea of a Gyome “meme” deck, that don’t specifically create Food tokens?
33:50 Yeah, I know. I got swept by such a Storm deck. Twice. All of my loathing.
Hofri will take over games in any red white deck. Just what red white needed tbh. A value generating boi
I thought the DMFC could be cast at either sides cost? Wouldn't that make the Green/Blue guy only 4?
Good video, I am a bit confused with the Velomachus ranking though. Don’t the majority of extra combat spells cost 5 or less?
The majority of the extra combat cards can only work if you cast them in your main phase. If you cast them during combat off of velomachus that don't do anything.
Having Tivash trigger on each instance of life gain might be too strong as it would go infinite with any of the soul sisters. So perhaps at the beginning of each end step would have been better and fairer.
I don't think that I'd have any of the elder dragons as commanders, BUT definitely in the 99.
Got alot of staples from mardu colors and built extus. It came out really nasty!
"does Fain look like Loki to you?"
Yes! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who saw that.
I can't wait to see awaken the blood avatar deck list
I like the power level of strixhaven - at least there is not another tergrid lol
When Fain does the Loki look better than Valki... *Looks at her Norse mythology deck and smirks*
Maybe it'd be better for a future one if you review by color or name instead of by tier
do more of this!!! This is quality content
My playgroup's meta with no infinite combos or extra turns:
S=3
A=6
B=9
C=12
D=12
