  • The October 2022 spam update had a massive impact on many sites. Many of these were "niche sites" - not overtly spammy, but still breaking Google's spam guidelines. With this update, it looks like Google's AI spam fighter - SpamBrain has gotten much better at finding unnatural links - links made for SEO purposes.
This is an important listen, even if you were not impacted by this update.

We got hit and lost about 20% of our traffic during the spam update despite never engaging in malicious SEO ever, we've never even bought a link or a guest post. And all our content is written by highly paid experts. My only theory is that there are thousands of sites scraping and copying our content for many many years, and Google confused our original content with their scraped content because we did a site migration about 8 months ago. Very sad.

Happy to take a quick look. I've yet to see a site hit by the spam update that wasn't breaking Google's spam guidelines in some way. However, many people that thought they were hit by the spam update actually were hit by something else. There were a lot of things changing at that time. You can reach out to me on Twitter if you want me to take a quick look.

Great video thanks. I have a question. I ran a scan on my semrush and found medium toxicity score on my backlink audit. What is your experience with toxic backlinks, would you remove them or just leave them. These are random links that are not created by me. Please advise.

As much as I love Semrush, we are not on the same page when it comes to Toxic links. You can almost definitely ignore these links. They will not harm you.

The site was penalized by the October spam update and new posts were not indexed
Is there any way to fix it?

I'm working on a guide to help site owners. Basically it comes down to this. If you were hit, you've been breaking the guidelines listed here: developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies.
In most cases I reviewed, link building was to blame. But not all.
You need to clean up the problem (i.e. disavow the links built just for SEO, remove thin affiliate content, remove content copied from other sites, etc.).
But in order to recover you will likely need to show Google's algorithms you truly have good, helpful content. Using links to try and convince Google others are recommending you will not work any more. Most likely, in order to recover you'll need to find a way to produce content that a searcher would find much more valuable than what is currently ranking. No easy task.

Is Google Search Console screwing up lately? I have about 5 key words that suddenly out of nowhere show that I am ranking 2 or 3 for. It shows that these keywords have generated over 500,000 impressions in a week. However they have show as getting about 10 clicks combined. What is happening. Clearly if I was ranking 2 or 3 I would have more than 10 clicks from 500,000 impressions. Google analytics shows no change in traffic. Is something wrong with my site or with Search Console?

Any chance you're ranking in an image pack or other SERP feature?
