    The first formal commission after my giveaway wasn’t a regular weathering job, but rather a fully repainting an HO scale passenger - inside out! A Walthers Milkwaukee Road Hiawatha Skytop Passenger Car gets repainted into Canadian National Colours, including an interior and passengers!

    This is an updated version of the combo set that I started with. The advantage of this newer version is that if you wanted to swap out needle sizes, it can be done with upgrade kits, and it comes with different sizes of paint cups. It comes with a 0.3mm needle as standard. This also comes with the same compressor that you saw in the video. I’ve been very happy with my setup. It has done everything I’ve asked it to. Fittings on this airbrush and hose are ⅛” which are compatible with Iwata hoses.

      Only one attempt at weathering over here JC. It came out ok. My layout is pretty new so I have so much to do everywhere. I am scratch building a watermill, and will be attempting to weather it soon. .

    Ive done a bunch of passenger car builds. they are by far the most time consuming. Amazing job I have never even thought about painting the seats or people!

      Well, the windows were big enough. One can do silhouette types, but having something with a bit more detail seemed appropriate.

    Nice job. I lucked out a few years back and got a brass model of one of the Skytop sleeper cars, which CN actually got from Milwaukee Road. It came factory painted and lettered in the black and gray CN livery and has the CN spec interior in the lounge section.

    Wow John, excellent work there. That car really “pops” especially with the lighting installed. My wife loves Lindt chocolate so I’d be in her good books buying a box for “modelling” purposes. Look forward to those other videos.

      Thanks David. The lighting kit is really easy to install and activate. I originally picked up the standard one but very quickly realized that the shorty was needed for the Skytop. There's never a bad time for chocolates. :)

    The window masking was a great idea. I wonder how Empty Sprue figured out that would work. I didn't even know the foil peeled of the plastic on those wrappers. AWESOMENESS.

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  4 года назад +2

      I had a chance to talk to him about it, and it came out of him playing with a wrapper and discovering that the wrappers peeled. He then tried it on airplane canopies, and whaddya know?! Kudos belong there... I just made good use of it.

    Spoiler alert: the Walthers car is a parlor car, not a sleeper-lounge, so CN paint is not technically accurate. MILW's Creek-series skytop sleeper-lounges were built by Pullman-Standard, not in MILW shops and have more skytop windows (lounge only under the skytop, five double-bedrooms further fwd). CN bought the Skytop sleeper-lounges (not the parlors) in 1964 for its east coast "Ocean' train.

    Red over white primer looks pink. Better to use a med grey primer if you want a fire engine red. - painter

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  4 года назад

      Usually I do 2 thin coats over a white primer to avoid any sort of pink look. One trick I've seen is to lay down a pink layer first, and then do red.

    Thanks for the upload. I saw some Budd cars on ebay in a different color scheme and I was wondering if it was a possible to repaint them into VIA rail HEP1 and HEP2 livery. Thanks for the tips.

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  3 года назад

      Before I created my channel, I did exactly that with some Kato stainless steel cars. I think they were in Southern livery. I bought decals from HighBall Graphics and made them look like current VIA rail cars. At some point you may see them in a video rolling by. :)

  • @oldiron1223

    Off Topic. How would I mark positions for decals to keep them correctly aligned. I am working on a string of coal hoppers for an "orphan" Midwest railroad and have about 25 cars I need to letter and I would like to mark the positions without scratching the paint. Hints?

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  4 года назад

      One possibility is to literally count rivets - what I mean by that is find reference points, be they rivets, ridges, or something else on a model to determine the decal positions. Do one up as a prototype reference, and keep it in front of you when working on subsequent cars.

    Why not just paint the over orange and red stripe becuse I know most model railroadrs well let me explain they had unletterd green passnger car and just spry paint the red over the green paint and the paint neverd Chip off

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  3 года назад

      There's a few reasons, but two major ones come down to ease of painting as well as the fact that I added a lighting kit to the car. Most plastics are translucent, even if cast in black. The black primer would work against any of this kind of translucency. Second, the black primer was the right kind of black for a CN passenger car from that era. The light grey striping went over that quite nicely.

    • @chrisscott8934
      @chrisscott8934 3 года назад

      So it's a bad idea applay the red paint over the green paint then?

  • @chuchuchip

    It's pronounced dee-kal, not deck-al. Look it up in a dictionary. The British started this.

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  Год назад

      I did look it up on a few dialect and language sites. English-speaking Canadians including myself pronounces it as Deckal. It’s an example of a regional dialect difference. We also refer to Sodas as “Pop.”
