  • In this video I advice on some of the first classes to consider taking once you get admitted into Georgia Tech OMSCS. I also share my experience of the first class I took.

    Love the audio, the base you talk at, and your advice, all the other videos have bad audio!
    Thank you! for the heads up
    And I like how you started by saying (let us say you got into the program) hahaha
    xD
    I'm in my second year of CS but I want to go stright into the program right after I'm done!

      Thanks for the comment, I am improving the sound from my side. i just got new microphones and a voice recorder. Hopefully this would help on my future videos.

      @christian Turner: Great, That's a great choice. I really enjoyed that class. You will learn a lot. I loved the part of the class that talk about how video is distributed in a network. Remember to start early on the projects. Even if they seem easy on the surface. Good luck on the program and maybe we could take some classes together. I still have 3 more classes to go.

    Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts. I just wonder if the structure and difficulty for those courses remain somewhat unchanged through the years?

    • @edsonphilippe58
      @edsonphilippe58  Год назад +1

      Good question! Seems like not that much things changed in term of the load/difficulty . When a course is new, they might change some rules in future semester. For example, instead of having a project be done individually, some classes might give you the option to work with a teammate. While this might sound like a good idea, you might end up working harder because now you have a teammate and you have to communicate with them anytime you are making changes in the codebase. I am not sure if having a teammate really makes the class easier. It might actually means more work ( Communication, scheduling, resolving conflict, etc )

      Yes, definitely. I have been taking care of my new baby and had to make a few sacrifices. Now she is older, I will dedicate more time into the channel

    hi Edson , what class shall I take being senior software engineer, did you suggest CS 6290: High Performance Computer Architecture as taking as the first course?

    • @edsonphilippe58
      @edsonphilippe58  Год назад

      This class was supper hard when I took it because it required some experience with low level programming. Things like C++ and assembly. I feel it was more on my side. I never use C++ on my daily job and it took me sometime to understand the code base I was working on. I feel it was more an issue from my side then from the class. Also, because I took it as my first class, it did not know how much effort I would have need to succeed. I under estimated the amount of work I had to put and over estimated my ability to code in C++.

    Hey
    Did you take CS-6035 (Intro to info security) ? I am planning to take this one (thinking it is easy) as my first and only class for 1st semster ?

    • @edsonphilippe58
      @edsonphilippe58  2 года назад +1

      Hello Jitendra, Hope you are doing well. I did not have a chance to take that class. However, I took Network Security course and seems like taking intro to info security would have made it easier for me to understand certain material that are covered in Network Security. Good luck on that class; it should be one of those classes that should ease your transitioning into school if you have been out of it for a while.

    Thanks for your video! You mentioned about leet code too study data structures. Could i get only with free version? Thank you.

    • @edsonphilippe58
      @edsonphilippe58  Год назад +1

      Yes, of course. The free version should be enough to get you great result. I recently got the paid version, but I don't think it's really worth it unless you are actively interviewing.

    As a Mathematics major is Software Development Process a good first course?

    • @edsonphilippe58
      @edsonphilippe58  2 года назад

      This is a good course; but honestly, it's more of a course you take to boost grade than it would be to learn new things (Assuming you are a senior engineer). That class will give you a good feeling on what you do in your day to day as a real software engineer working in industry. It goes over the tools (IDE, Git, Java, Android Dev, working in team, software engineering). If you have never worked as a software engineer in a team, then the things you learn are great and valuable things. If you have been working as a real software engineer, then you would only take that class to boost grade.

      @@edsonphilippe58 Thanks for the reply. I was looking at obtaining a data analyst data scientist role for the moment. Perhaps the OMSCS might augment my CV and lead to that career.

      @@Littlejonjontheking I remember they have a track for people interested in data science/Data analytic. It's completely separate track. I had to take some classes with those students. pe.gatech.edu/degrees/analytics/curriculum . Those students are really good with statistic, math etc... but seems like they don't go in depth in hard core programing. When I work with them, I would write the program that would pull data and save the data in a database for them, and they will use that data to analyze it write conclusion. I would not really know what would be a good starting class if you are doing data analytic. I only took 1 course with them (data visualization)
