Star Wars was revolutionary, it streamlined science fiction and changed the attitude and style of Sci-Fi. Gone are the retro-futuristic designs of Star Trek TOS. Gone was the garishness of Flash Gordon. Gone was the camp of Buck Rogers and Lost in Space. Star Wars made Sci-Fi gorgeous and serious, it brought the concepts and visuals of so many fantastical Sci-Fi novels to life in a way no other franchise has done since.
From a design and physical aspect i could say that the roughly human early han solo designs are totally based on lucas himself lmao, like him envisioning his persona as a character
It was neat that many of these concepts DID end up in SW: Rebels. Zeb = Chewbacca. Kanan = Han Solo (loosely. Think of the beard, armor and light saber). Chopper = earlyR2 (has arms in his head) Sabine = Female Luke
The interesting thing is that many of these designs, while unused in a New Hope, were implemented in later projects, for example the ape like Chewie design was eventually used for one of the protagonists of Star Wars Rebels, as was one of the R2-D2 designs, that's just off the top of my head, it'd take someone far better at research to find them all. I think that's interesting, for most franchises the majority of concept art is functionally discarded; it may appear on a DVD bonus reel or get published online, but once the finalized design is chosen, the rest is left forgotten. It's interesting to me that here, these designs are sometimes adopted many years later.
You gotta do the unused concepts of Star Wars the Empire strikes back and the unused concept of Star Wars the return of the Jedi in you can do the prequel’s and the sequels
"The Pirate Ship" actually did end up seeing use as Princess Leia's blockade runner that she's on when Darth Vader captures her at the beginning of the film. They removed the cockpit from the front and replaced it with the "hammerhead" bridge design seen in the film, which changed it's appearance significantly enough from the Space: 1999 Eagles that The Pirate Ship was thought to look too similar to. I don't see it, myself, but if you ask me, it was a blessing in disguise, since The Pirate Ship wasn't even close to as interesting a design as the now-iconic Millennium Falcon.
After watching Across The Spiderverse, miguel o'hara face kinda looks like a more humanoid version of Han Solo original design on 8:27 especially with the eyes.

It was the peak of creativity in that field probably never to be repeated.

I thought exactly the same! Also Luke/Lucas? 🤔
Spiderman is an adaptation, this is an original idea, that's why this is much more interesting
honestly it would be amazing to have a what if film based on some of the unused concepts
One kind of exists in the form of a graphic novel called star wars infinities
@@AndrewCereijo there's a early adaptation called The Star Wars by JW Rinzler by Dark Horse, check it out
@@JoeChillton yeah I have that
Unused concepts of the Star Wars franchise has soo much potential. Please don't stop here
That Han Solo design is pretty much just Swamp Thing with drip
Darth Vader mask in rebels is my favorite version, it’s so sharp and clean
As someone who loves this channel and absolutely loves Star Wars I literally screamed out loud when I saw this. I’m so excited and I can’t wait!
It was neat that many of these concepts DID end up in SW: Rebels. Zeb = Chewbacca.
Kanan = Han Solo (loosely. Think of the beard, armor and light saber).
Chopper = earlyR2 (has arms in his head)

Terrific! I thought I’d seen every existing piece of concept art for the first Star Wars but there’s some shown here I’m not familiar with!
3:36 subtle Bane audio
One of the chewbacca designs and the thin lightsabers were actually resued in Star Wars Rebels
These are so sick, you can see how the main focus was trying a variety of designs with a completely open mind

The big eyed Chewbacca design was reused in Star Wars Rebels for Zeb

Sorry I missed the premiere! Love the channel.
Can't wait for this
Some of Chewie's early designs look nightmarish 😬
So nice to see Star Wars on this channel. Great video as always.
I love Star Wars! I know this'll be good!
Deak starkiller lives once again

So Han Solo used to look like George Lucas
Also in young Barry’s movie poster in his room was Looney Tunes Back In Action
Could you make more of these star wars unused concepts
0:22 what is he supposed to be?
red head band?
no character in Star Wars had that.
he must be confused.
Music is very distracting.
Do a video on the X-men unused concept arts video if you want to that is if you're not interested that's fine
Ngl I’m probably the only one who thinks Ralph Mcquarrie original Storm trooper design actually looks better than the ones we have today.
8:42, looks like Han may have been modeled after George Lucas. but that might just be my eyes
Calling lightsabers “laser swords” does make sense
Bug life….
