I'd like to see a mini-expansion featuring extinct species at some point, as a lesson on naturalism, evolution and habitat preservation: the Upland Moa (New Zealand), the Great Auk (Newfoundland), Passenger Pigeon (North America), Dodo (Mauritius) or any number of the hundreds of less famous extant or critically endangered species, maybe help raise money for wildlife refuge or wildlife conservation organizations.
I WAS JUST THINKING THIS EXACT SAME THING THE OTHER DAY!!!!
StoneMaier already announced 4 (!) more expansions. These have to be South America, Africa, (Eur)Asia, and just as I was thinking, maybe some final one with extinct birds and/or Antarctic and/or forgotten birds from the previous expansions.
Bringing in the historical, ecological and evolutionary aspects to the game theme would be interesting and complicating too. But it's a fantastic idea!

Key points about Nectar (acts as wild food source):
-Nectar can be used as any food resource, except in 1) specific food mentioned in activation on cards; 2) exchange cost next to “play a bird”.
-Nectar spent can get points at the end of game.
-Unused nectar supply is lost in between rounds.

I love this game, and the solo player Automa is very well designed.

Putting the wild resource (Nectar) on your player board to mean something later/at the end of the game is a really good idea. Are there any other games that do something like this? I'm the type of person that keeps wild cards/resources "just in case" and I find myself not using them come the end of the game. Something like this is perfect for me to get me to actually commit to using them.

Paying a food to reset the birdfeeder or face up cards is a great addition. The toss unused nectar at the end of a round is neat twist, not allowing you to stock all wildcard food.

Yes, it was cool to see this expansion add quite a bit more than just new birds (though I would have been happy with new birds too :) ).
I was really hesitant to get the Oceania expansion because of the new resource (nectar) and my assumed headaches with incorporating that into the base game...but after watching your video it actually looks really fun and I can't wait to get it! So thanks!

Nectar seems a little fiddly, but I'm looking forward to giving it a try.
I find explaining the way it works is actually a little more fiddly than actually using it in practice. :)

They are returned to the supply.
When is the African expansion coming out? Looking for some Toucans and Penguins.

Thanks so much for the great tutorial - simplifies what looked like an incredibly complicated game on unpacking. As a Kiwi I love this expansion. A question- for 2 players is it ok to just use the expansion cards or do they have to be mixed with the base cards?
So glad you enjoyed. On your question about the cards, I'm not sure quite how to answer. It's not the way the game is set up to be played, but I can't see why it wouldn't work.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks. It just seems there are enough cards in the expansion set but noted somewhere base cards are balanced. We are raw amateurs so May want more as we become skilled

Some questions for clarification on Nectar any time you use any Nectar to pay any of the board costs it goes on the associated Nectar slot. I also assume if you pay for something using more than 1 Nectar (most likely paying for a bird) you would add all nectar spent on the pile?

Hey Miguel, as a personal principle, I never call any game "essential", so I can't really help there. I try to avoid reviewing or recommending, as I can't say what games you may or may not enjoy, but hopefully the video can give you an idea if you think it would suit your particular tastes.
Rodney, when you described the differences between the boards, you didn't mention the changes to the Grassland...the original board egg rewards were 2-2-3-3-4, the new board defaults to 1-2-2-2-3 with more options to trade for additional eggs. Seems to be a pretty hefty downgrade of egg production.

Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but you'll find all the expansions covered on here, so check them out and see which one appeals to you most.

Great playthrough, as always. If an End Of Game card says to place a bird but there are no spots left in any habitat, is that action forfeited?
That is my understanding, but while I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website to be extra sure.

Now that they added flightless birds, I'm curious how they'll utilize penguins (in what I assume will be included in future expansions, if they don't have any in Oceania) and the Ostrich (Africa)...I would like to think that no matter how large a predatory bird is, they won't be allowed to tuck an ostrich. I do have a "realism-police" problem with added components in expansions, like nectar for example, since I know they won't retcon it to already released birds that drink nectar (like hummingbirds)...or maybe they will, who knows.
They have (at least) one penguin in the oceania expansion. In the video there was a "little penguin" that indeed was flightless

I have a question. The card shown at 4:31 costs either one worm or one nectar. What is the point of the card including nectar in this specific choice if I could use nectar as a replacement for any other food anyway?
Good question! But that's probably best answered by the publisher.
I hope they’ll release an expansion that features birds from tropical countries. 😉

Do you put Nectar on the "Nectar spent" area of your matt whenever you'd spend nectar or only when you spend nectar for costs that specifically require nectar?

We have only just picked up the base game, seem like they're adding too much already? I don't want to get rid of the player mats or those lovely wooden dice already!
I think it depends on your personal taste. I wouldn't personally pick up an expansion unless I had played the base game and was ready for some new things to experience.

That expansion looks much more "flavoured" than European one, that seems to only add more cards (it has some new powers, but not that much changing). Another thing it's a pity there's no South America expansion. I think the issue is the language, since many of the translations won't fit in the game's bonus cards system. South America is the so-called Bird Continent and it keeps 3.3 k species, much more than the species from North America, Europe e Oceania combined!!

How would you play a bird requiring nectar if you discard unused nectar after gathering food?

No, it does not.

I suppose you could try - but the intention is to use them as described in the video.

That's right, this expands the original game, giving you new elements to add into it.
I think Rodney would be the Black Swan. More rock n roll than a regular swan and a pleasant surprise to those who discover him.
Though if you're not watching out, he will steal your hamburger bun off the picnic table.

Why is it important to put the squares in the right place on board after every turn? The instructions said we should but then I can't see why it's important end of game.
Sorry Matt, can you explain which squares you are referring to? I shot this long enough ago that it would help to know which specific components you are referring to so I can be sure I’m answering you correctly.
Literally the whole time we played the original game we kept saying how we wish there'd be more New Zealand birds!
