      I really like the unique theme and think that Elizabeth Hargrave brings some much-needed diversity to the cast of top board game designers. That being said, as far as tableau builders go, I actually prefer Everdell over Wingspan (pretty unpopular opinion in the hobby).
      This expansion seems like it adds a lot of interesting ideas to the game though. Thanks for sharing!

      Wingspan is probably my wife and my go-to game. We love birds already and sometimes will be in the mood for this game after a hike with binoculars... but the gameplay of building on these actions and how different the game can feel just with a new hand, different goals, and an lucky birdfeeder roll makes this one we always come back to. The European Expansion's new goal tiles were awesome as a way to make it feel more varied (less egg-centric goals) and provided us a new challenge so out. We only just got the European Expansion but I'm excited for what this expansion will bring. I would also say that this game has probably had the biggest influence on my tastes in the hobby by introducing me to engine building and to SM games.

    I was hoping you were going to do this expansion and I am not disappointed :) One thing that is easy to miss about the "no goal" tile, though. Since there is no goal that round, you don't need to place a cube on the end-of-round place, which in turn increases the number of actions you will have in subsequent turns. Thus, if you put the "no goal" tile in round 1, you will have 3 additional actions in the game, one more in each following round. It was the very reason why that tile was included (according to the design diaries), as some people wanted to have more actions and this is the designer's response.
    All in all, this appears to be an even greater expansion than the previous one :) It shakes up a lot of the existing mechanics without making them more complicated. I can't even think what new mechanics they are going to put in the next expansions, but I am ready to be pleasantly surprised. By the way, Elisabeth Hargrave is an avid bird watcher herself, so she really knows what she is talking about when it comes down to birds.
    One final thought - I have never been frustrated with the original Wingspan. I find the game very well designed and balanced, as it offers a lot of paths to victory. I guess what frustrates people the most is that the game often forces you to adapt on the fly, rather than plan your move in advance. I believe a good comparison is backgammon, which does the same thing - you need to adapt to every dice roll you get.

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  3 года назад +6

      Oh my gosh such a great point! You're right it does give you the potential for 3 extra actions over the course of the game. You're right, the game adds and even more well rounded Wingspan game. We have seen in some games a player can't get the right combination of food and bird cards at the right time and they end up feeling like they are 2-3 turns behind everyone else. I tend to agree that the more experienced player is less likely to find themselves in that position.

    Hey 'Before You Play'. :)
    You've made the best playthrough I've seen of a board game, the playthrough of Fort. And the thoughts you shared about the game afterwards were very relatable. :) It's now natural to check out your videos for any board game I'm interested in.
    If I can give you just one tip! At least from my point of view. When looking for a review of a product, I would like to see the product. :) For example, I'm very excited about seeing the new bird cards in the Oceania Expansion, and 08:27 - 08:30 is mostly all I got to see. :) There were a couple of other shots, but still only for a few seconds. You mention that there are a wide variety of abilities, and you continue to talk enthusiastically about them, while on my end I'm sitting here thinking "ooh, let me see!". If you click the timestamp and imagine you're me going nuts from seeing new cards, also imagine me when it ends in 3 seconds. :D
    In any case, keep up the good work, and thanks for taking the time to make this review!

    So excited for this one. Wingspan is my wife's favorite game so we play it a lot. The European expansion really helped refresh it for me since it provided other viable last round options other than egg spamming. I am really excited what other avenues become available here, especially with the end round goal or no goal so you get a few more actions in the game.

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  3 года назад

      100% agree. Egg spamming was a legitimate path in base Wingspan. Each expansion chisels the game into a more well round experience.

  • @nikola7721

    Also guys, "Gain food" and "Draw cards" actions are improved on the main board (all spots are more powerful) and "Lay eggs" action is weakened on the main board (all spots are worse) - so the board is not only different from old one in a sense that it has refresh spot and nectar mechanics, but is also IMO more balanced, it adresses the base game issue of gaining food and drawing cards being much weaker actions than laying eggs.

    Thanks again Monique and Naveen! Another awesome review from my favorite RUclips channel :). Great video. Cool to see all the things in this expansion. I guess as they look to add to/improve game play, some theme may be lost. I mean, birds looking in a particular direction? Definitely like the addition that you can somehow flush the tableau. Do the new bird cards that are added to the game keep the same % of attributes as stated on original private goal cards? Or is that information just known to be outdated?

    I believe nectar is wild for playing birds and counts when a wild food symbol is present. However, I think Jamie Stegmaier confirmed that nectar is not wild when a bird power requires a specific food type (e.g. discard 1 seed to tuck 2 cards). Bird powers still require specific food types. Otherwise, great summary.

    From my understanding the Automa hoard is a way to account for those brown powers where "All players gain x" such as the hummingbirds. I guess in the multiplayer game players like to think about whether or not they want to give their opponent that extra resource, so the hoard simulates that for solo (or co-op). My wife and I aren't quite so competitive when we play but thinking back to how much fun you two had "hate-drafting" each other in the Calico playthrough, maybe you'd like the subtle difference it adds, haha.
    If you play with Automarazzi the hoard is used to help balance out one of the options it gives you as players to share resources though you apparently can forgo that option and play Automarazzi without the hoard.

    I like how you both focused on how oceania addresses some of wingspan's criticisms.
    I absolutely love the idea of wingspan. I love how it makes birds cool, is an approachable game and elizabeth hargrave herself seems awesome butttttt the way people talked about the gameplay made it seem like egg laying was kind of the dominant strategy and it made me think twice about it.
    This expansion really feels like a mature tweak on the wingspan formula in a way that makes me more interested in picking up the base game and giving it a try.

    This is a really solid game and one that regularly gets to the table, especially as each expansion adds new gameplay and "fixes" little quirks in the game. I have used it to bring many people into the hobby. Many people who would not be interested in space, fantasy, or medieval cultures will come to the table to play a cool game about birds. I love what Elizabeth's games are doing for the hobby. Just wait till the next couple expansions, we will be awash in bird cards...

    This was a really helpful video, thanks! I'm not really sure from watching this, or from any of the links I've read about this expansion so far, but how well does this integrate with the vanilla game? Can you play the expansion even if you don't have either prior installment? Can you shuffle all the bird cards from all three installments together and still have a coherent game?

    • @moozel4757
      @moozel4757 2 года назад

      Yes, you can play it with or without the europe expansion. You will have to shuffle it with the base game.
      In the base game, spamming eggs usually bags you the win most of the time but in this expansion, eggs are nerfed and there are more creative ways to score points. (the creator even acknowledges that chihuahuan crow and common crow cards are OP and can be removed if you want to)
      It also addresses the foodtray problem by allowing you to reroll by paying a resource and adds a wild food type (nectar).
      10/10 recommended to get this expansion.

    about storage: I have all player boards of the base game and the oceania expansion in the oceania box. they fit perfectly! the rest is stored in the base box. if you also have the european expansion, you end up with two of those cardboxes. they just don't fit both in the base box, but it's not that big of a deal...

    sounds great. i never felt frustrated in a negative way with the original when food wasn't available or no good bird cards weren't available, it added good tension to the game for me. im wondering if the wild makes it too easy to always have the food you need and the reset will always get you what you want. one question: i didn't like the emphasis on tucking in the european expansion, with added 95 bird cards, is that strategy a little more watered down?

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  3 года назад +1

      Hmm it's hard to say as there are so many combos out there. The wild food is interesting as it makes timing of choosing to get food really important. You don't want to be the one to reset the feeder for others to gain. In terms of the tucking issue, it was really hard to tell as we played 1 game with all the new bird cards (95) and roughly another (95) of the old cards. This made it so that we could ensure we felt the effect of the new cards more. Another game we played with all the cards mixed together. Hope this helps!

    • @ronthelibrarian
      @ronthelibrarian 3 года назад +2

      We opened it tonight. My wife played lots of tree birds, so she reset the feeder any time she wanted food, which always rolled nectar. She never had to worry about what food to get, as she almost always had 2-3 nectar. It became a get nectar, play any bird you want, get more nectar. I think the expansion is mostly about food management, which I don’t particularly like.

    • @cameleonfleuri
      @cameleonfleuri 4 месяца назад

      @@ronthelibrarianMany people came with a solution for this problem : take 3 dice from the base game and only 2 dice of the Oceania expansion. This way, getting nectar is way more difficult and it balances things up.

      @@BeforeYouPlay My understanding is that they were originally going to wait until all 6 expansions (one per continent) were released but after this one they decided to start looking into it sooner. It's gotta be hard to try to future proof a big box storage solution though.

    My big question is, do these changes to the player board and goals make it so that pursuing your private goals and the public goals is competitive with just creating a brutally efficient egg-generation engine? I always feel like our games come down to the fourth round, asking "ok, I could try hard to maximize my food generation to play more birds and max out my goals, or I could just add one or two final birds to lay more eggs and or provide lots of egg slots, and then lay as many eggs as possible". I find the first one a lot more fun, but feel like the second one virtually always creates more points. This expansion seems like it might have changed that, I hope it did.

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  3 года назад +1

      I feel like it actually helps round out the game more so that there is less emphasis on egg laying and more emphasis on private/public goals. The addition of using nectar to try and score majorities can also influence this if you see an opportunity to pass up a competitor.

    For me, the whole mechanic with collecting spent nectar is kind of overpowered, since nectar can be used as any resource AND gives you VP in the end of the game. Nectar being discarded at the end of the round is not enough of a drawback. In 1 v 1 game, the person, who chooses food first usually has an advantage, since second player usually has 3 cubes to choose from with no nectar on them. Basically we had a situation, where second to draw food from feeder was at disadventage, because once one chooses 2 cubes, next player resets feeder and gets all the nectar, and not only he wont get punished for that, he will get more VP in the end of the game. Seems not balanced to me.

    My game group strongly prefers the European expansion to Oceania. The European one brings in a nice variety of new strategy options. However, the Oceania changes seem contrived and unnecessary, and do not improve the gameplay.

    There is a lot about Wingspan that is refreshing, the illustrations are excellent, the flavour on the cards is a nice touch, the setting is great, but I just don’t really like it. As I said I like the setting, but the theme is a bit strange, essentially trapping birds for your private bird preserve. That isn’t a huge deal, just some icing on the cake. I don’t enjoy the scoring, and there is basically no player interaction. When I grab a lighter Euro, one to play with the familia, we want there to be a bunch of interaction, which is why we tend to skew more towards older Euros. Yes some cards care about what others are doing, but few and far between. I am glad it is doing well, it just isn’t the kind of game we enjoy that much.

    Really think im going to give this a miss. I have European expansion and already that feels like theres too many cards haha, and it feels complete enough. Plus i have a box insert that all these bits wont fit into. The only thing i like about this expansion is the round goals, because the “most eggs in blah blah” tiles almost ruin Wingspan for me, theyre really uninspiring and are a downer when just setting the game up. Maybe they could do a release of just a bunch more different round goals?

    I found this game too daunting,I bought the digital version and got a refund,just too hard for me,I grew up with games like Monopoly,seems the modern games have so many different rules,I prefer the simple games.
    It is also hipster to bag Monopoly these days but it still outsells other games and is made for all people ,not just the snobby brainy ones.
