The worst part of that whole story Trevor didn't get to tell was the police never called the family of this boy to tell them what happened. They had to find out their son/brother was dead from FB. For god sake if you accidentally murdered someone the LEAST you could do as a cop is have someone from the department tell the family what happened and give condolences.

In Finland our cops have strict orders not to shoot unless seriously threatened for life, and even then the aim is not to kill. If a cop shoots someone they always face a court process where the necessity of said force is evaluated. Generally this system works well - I don’t remember a single case where a police officer would have shot an innocent person. That said, I only remember a handful of cases where they’ve had to shoot at all. I guess because were a “socialist country” our bad guys aren’t that bad...? Or then it’s just that our legislation regarding both law enforcement and gun ownership does amount to something. And for those of you who don’t know: gun ownership is perfectly legal here but under strict laws and for instance concealed weapons aren’t allowed in public.

i believe our officers are taught the same as our military: Shoot center mass. it's a bad policy for civilian engagement. it occurred to me today that there really is no judicial system in place to evaluate officer killings of suspects in my country. i'm almost positive the police evaluate themselves (though i easily could be wrong). our court system wouldn't try a dead person, and that is the only legitimate way of determining guilt. it's so weird that this hasn't come up before. why do dead people in America not get their day in court? obviously a dead person can't actively defend themselves or make basic decisions regarding their defense, like plead innocent or guilty. but it's amazing that our system isn't built to acknowledge this crucially important question. how is this a thing? if an officer kills someone... What, they're just automatically guilty, without a trial!? that's insanity!
i'm just thinking off of the top of my head. i'm definitely not a lawyer or police officer.

My Country has many Years where our Police uses less Ammunition than US-Police in one single incident. If they shoot, its into Air or to stop people (arms, legs) not to kill them.
Just some ideas: Education to be Police Officer = 3 years (not a few Months at max like in the US), no Military equipment for normal Police, Special Force like SWAT only for dangerous Situations (some time ago i read in a Newsarticle, that SWAT is used to execute simple arrest warrants), ...oh right.....dont give any idiot a Weapon....then your Police dont have to fear the Citizens.

It doesn't matter what they have to say. They're not the ones living in fear ever day due to the prejudice and discrimination attached to the color of their skin. They are not living in fear everyday for heir family and friends-- who can be taken away from them just be being black. They are one-sided. Their mission isn't to spread awareness but rather propaganda which limits people from thinking outside this indoctrinated system. They don't care at all. Why should we take an interest in what they have to say if they can't accept the fact that this is the truth--black people in America don't matter and no matter what position we're in we can't escape or be seen past our blackness. We should strive to learn, educate, and question the very system that had created a troubling reality that some have to live with--either by acknowledging the privilege that white people have AND working tirelessly to use that privilege to bring awareness to the voices and stories of mariginalized people...especially black people. Now that's how we make steps towards shutting up these propaganda pushing networks that want nothing more than to make a quick buck off Other's pain. I'm sorry but I don't care what they have to say. I care more about what we as Americans-- more importantly humans--are going to do. Period. Miss me with that.

Before any talk of gun rights or accusations of institutional racism, can we all agree that it's messed up that police officers rarely receive punishment for committing manslaughter? When the man on the street kills someone by accident, they can get sent to prison for two years or more, but when an officer of the law does it, it gets brushed aside because it's "part of the job". It's no surprise that officers can be reckless with the use of lethal force when they themselves never suffer the consequences.

Colin Forbes obviously we don’t know what will happen to this officer though to your point about officers not answering for mistakes the same way civilians do, that’s deliberate. I don’t know a single state or county or municipality that doesn’t indemnify their officers. No one would do the job if they were on the same scale as civilians. By going through whatever academy they graduate from the state then assumes liability. Governments at every level do actually try and get out from under protecting any officer and plenty are put on trial. They’re juried trials so really it comes down to twelve people one of whom, at least, doesn’t want to convict a cop.

Hand guns are not that powerful. Most people don't realize this because everything you see would lead you to think they are death rays. Especially if you're a 110 lb woman defending yourself from a 200+ lb man, you want to shoot for center mass to disrupt vita functions so he stop immediately. You're also not going to take the time to try and aim just to wound someone. You will have to defend that in court and they can(and have) tried and paint it as "malicious intent" even in a self defense case. If you have time to aim just to wound someone the logic is you had time to get away. It's just not practical in the few seconds a lethal force encounter lasts.

Cops ARE having to be more careful since there’s people going out to kill them JUST for being a cop and you’re no better calling them pigs. Nothing is solved keeping a closed mind. If you hate all cops sooo much, why not then become a cop yourself. Why not change the very thing you’re complaining about? Imagine cops telling you to drop your weapon and instead of complying you keep screaming at them. Also, every single shooter that police “talked down” was literally a guy that surrendered. Every time. This guy is literally a clown. He consistently twists the stories and makes assumptions. Always. He rarely ever talks the whole story exactly how it is. I know PLENTY of armed black men who exercise their 2nd amendment right. Most of my town is armed black men who legally own firearms and regularly use their firearms to stop crimes. My county ain’t very clean. But the 2nd amendment is meant for all American citizens. Everyone. As long as you haven’t committed a violent crime or a federal offense. You’re allowed to own a gun and defend yourself and others. Quit spreading false propaganda. Every once in a blue moon, a black guy gets shot and everyone tries to twist it to make it seem like they shot him without reason. The cop who got shot in the back got shot because the guy they were shooting at was in front of them and the black cop moved into the line of fire. There’s bodycam of that. Like come on just tell the truth and quit trying to twist it for political gain. Jesus. You have the worst habit of falsifying information that I’ve ever even in my life. Aside from CNN. America is not racist. It has a few racist people but the nation itself is not racist. America does not discriminate against black people. More white people are killed by police every year than black people. More white people are killed by black cops every year than black people killed by white cops. But you don’t see white people protesting police brutality do you? No. Why? Because white people know why they get shot. They get shot for not complying, for assaulting officers, and all the same reasons why blacks people get shot by cops. Quit trying to encourage a race war in America when there’s no reason for one. Like holy Christ you’re pathetic if you actually have to spread lies about racism in America just for views. And anyone who comments to me, just know that I made sure to research everything before writing this comment because I didn’t want to get anything wrong. So if you don’t like what I typed, then don’t reply. I don’t care to read your negative comments because you personally believe I’m wrong.

@Michael Thomas you really aren't trying to understand the issue here. Like Trevor said in the video, when you have mass shootings by a white person, the cops won't always shoot them and instead try to talk to them. But when it's a black guy, even if he's ON HIS OWN PROPERTY cops will assume something and shoot him and kill him. They won't bother talking to him.

Those who push the "good guy with a gun" narrative as a defense against mass shootings are going to have to contend with two things: One, that cops consider a gun an elevated level of threat and make it harder to identify the actual shooter when everyone is armed. It's frankly a miracle people weren't shooting each other in a panic. And two, that even the presence of a gun is measured as an entirely different level of threat depending on who is holding it. Emantic Bradford wasn't even the only person at the mall with a gun out but he was the only one considered to present an "elevated level of threat" for which he was immediately shot. No command to put the weapon down according to witnesses, just shot. Police were happy to announce he was the shooter before even checking his unfired gun. Then tried to leave room to imply he was a secondary shooter or an accomplice when the pressure was on. Just a month ago Jemel Roberson, a security guard, had a shooter restrained in a Chicago bar. He was wearing his work clothes which included a hat with the word SECURITY printed on it. Patrons at the bar tried to tell the police not to shoot, that he had saved their lives, that the man he was restraining was the real danger. He died in a hail of bullets and posthumous excuses.
So which is it? Having a gun saves lives? Having a gun makes you a threat and obligates police to go weapons free? Or is it time to admit that black people in America only have the same rights on paper? (Edit: Not to imply my country of Canada is really that much better, especially as we seem to be experiencing an uptick in BS right now. But I do like to think we at least try to walk our talk and unite rather than actively turn our countrymen against eachother when it boils over to a point we can't ignore.)
Like Trevor said there's no talking down, not with black men. In the aftermath people will actually try to say police have an obligation to shoot immediately, that it's not worth the risk to their lives to even properly assess the situation if they feel threatened in the slightest. And yet who does get talked down? Dylann Roof, who killed 9 in a church. Gregory Bush who tried to do the same, only to decide to shoot up a grocery store when he found the church doors locked. Robert Bowers who killed 11 people in a synagogue and fired on police, wounding an officer. The Hammonds and Bundys who set devastating wildfires, assaulted police, occupied government facilities, had an armed standoff, and called for open insurrection and war. These people were not treated as a threat to be dispatched with extreme prejudice even with guns trained on police. They were treated with dignity, their lives mattered, shooting was a last resort if it was even on the table at all. With that last example especially the fact they broke the law in numerous ways didn't even factor into how people reacted, they supported their supposed "rights" and actually shamed police for the standoff and made it clear that if the police were to shoot anyone that there'd be hell to pay. A very sharp contrast to how any situation involving a black man is handled and critiqued, even in a case where a man was shot for trying to show his autistic charge how to comply with police commands to try and save his life. Lying on his back with his hands in the air, people actually justified the police shooting him.
    It's just sickening.

diva doll thank you for making this point! Regan, as then gov. of Cali, decided to impose gun restrictions. Regan! Because white people were scared of the Panthers open carrying. Have you ever seen black second amendment supporters open carrying these days? Like the guys in Texas, who were protesting or something, open carrying f-ing AR-15s n sh*t. No, because a black man would be shot. Doubt the police even hassled those white guys, prolly didn't ask for permits or anything. You can bet that wouldn't be the case if they weren't white. But a bunch of black second amendment supporters open carrying would be an awesome visual, if it weren't so dangerous for them, and that's coming from someone who hates guns.

@@dee31415 I agree. I tell young people all the time to talk to their parents, and, especially, grandparents, if they want to know about the events during their lifetime, like the civil rights movement. Back when the Panthers and Black Nationalists were walking around, they were called everything negative. But, we can have a POTUS claim to be a white Nationalist, and they call it putting America first. Kind of like they made the athletes that took a knee out to be un American, unpatriotic, and disrespectful. The young people now had better be making a record of current events to tell it to their young.

Jon Doe it's like voting. Restrictive laws were only ever put in place to stop black people, and women, from voting. It's all so blatantly racist but they still come up with excuses to justify it. And it's just enough for most white people to glaze over it. Not stop and take a closer look and realize it's f-ed. And because it doesn't affect them they ignore it. That's white privilege right there. Ignoring the fact that so many things are set up to give black people the sh*t end of the stick. The criminal justice system and sentencing laws- mandatory minimums, 100x increased penalization for crack ('black drug') vs powdered coke ('white drug') (this huge discrepancy was recently reduced but not eliminated), the entire war on drugs(/black people), even what's considered a felony some places (Florida- if you steal $300 worth of goods, felony), cash bail (when most Americans don't have $500 in the bank set aside for emergency), inadequate public defender representation, privately owned prisons influencing law makers, over policing in black communities to keep the whole machine running on the backs of black men at their expense and the expense of their community.
N there's plenty more of that type of sh*t. Red-lining in black neighborhoods that prevented home loans from being given out. While real estate is the number 1 was to accrue intergenerational wealth. How we fund public schools, gentrification and white flight (which I admittedly know little about and its effects).
Most white people don't have to deal with it. They don't see it. Idk why they're resistant to believe the game is rigged. Maybe guilt, or ignorance, or faith. Faith that you can trust things to be right and fair in this country because we believe we are a moral and good country and people. But all of that is white privilege, you don't have to see it or deal with it, so you don't care enough to do anything. Even just believing people who are dealing with it first-hand, whose POV you could never fully empathize with. Where the only way you can try to understand, really understand, is to listen and learn.

OddLunatic you got your LINK and then there was silence. Btw, i'm a dinosaur and no shame saying, i don't bother with links. There's a charming vid of a group of officers playing games with a totally innocent guy. caller said this only, 'i saw a suspicious person outside'. They grabbed a black man ( all white cops, at least 4 of them) out of his car threw him to the ground, cuffed him, and sicced a canine on him while he's face down in cuffs and command dog to attack while they laugh and sneer saying 'good boy' as dog chews half the guys calf off and the guy's writhing around in agony cuz no ONE could lay still on the ground handcuffed while a dog mauls them. They yell STOP MOVING While this is taking place another officer kicks dude in the head repeatedly. A torture party. In MN! They would not do this to a white man, or very unlikely. - daniel shavers execution is pretty damn disturbing but he at least had been drinking and had a bb gun out at some point. cop with 'you're fucked' engraved on his gun and prior excessive force issues plays a sick game of screaming 'simon says' with dude, makes the pleading, begging, sobbing man CRAWL! then shoots him 5x. it was BRUTAL and that policeman shows his psychotic ways in copcam vid. Psychotic mfs. No jail time for the pigs who used the canine to torture black dude. guy gets 3 mil and has permanent damage and mutiple surgeries had to be done. Literally half his entire lower leg is hollowed out. Find it, this type of shit is found on video constantly. FYI, ALL you have to do is look up kroger killing vid, or cops sic canine on innocent black in mn, or daniel shaver execution. Too hard for you?

So well said. Thank you, as ALWAYS. And please, if you get a chance to center Jemel Roberson, please do. There was SO much going on at the time, his story wasn’t properly centered in the media. Please check deeply into it. He stopped a mass shooting; who knows how many lives he saved.. Four people were shot. He saved the life of the killer...was holding the shooter at gun point...and was immediately shot when police rolled up. It makes me think of the timing of Tamir Rice’s killers. He acted in rare valor. Quick thinking, skill and luck (always a component) was on his side. And then he was executed by responding police...no question...because of his skin color. I don’t mean to say that there is a contest in tragic and outrageous murder. It’s just NOT. And, I have to say that I am just deeply heart broken that Jemel Roberson’s murder went by the wayside, in the media, because of the news cycle. His family needs national support. And folks have already forgotten...or (more likely) didn’t hear about it. We need to uplift his name and story. You have that extraordinary power. And use it SO well, everyday. Thank you, again, for that. Please look more deeply into it, if you can. Much love and gratefulness for the work you do. It it a critical component to giving me levity, re-centering, grounding...I deeply need to be able to show up.
