    Also if you squint then the dots will also show you they are the same color.
    this is why squinting is beneficial. It tells you the truth.

    Thank you Mark, I really needed to hear this. It is something I already knew and had heard before, but I have recently been painting portraits in oil from life, and after watching this just realized how much i have NOT been taking this into consideration. I have been making my shadows way too bright. Thank you for all the knowledge you share on here. I may not strictly use your method, but I really like the concept of it, and the way you base things on clear cut, concrete, tangible facts. There is a treasure of knowledge to be learned from you.

    I dont want this to sound disrespectful because it certainly isn't intended that way, but £50+ seems quite expensive for the colour checker, what advantage is there to just holding up a brush with the paint on it?

      it's disrespectful because you can't put a price to somebody else's work, especially if it's not a big company but a small group of artists doing such a great work. if you can't/don't want to afford simply don't, commenting on this is quite rude.

      @@NipapornP nah. i don't mind critiquing big companies but smaller entrepreneurs, my dude... just because you can't afford it, doesn't mean it's expensive. you don't know how much time and work one puts to develop their own products. for someone to say it's too expensive, it's like saying "you're overestimating your efforts" and that's, well, rude. i don't need to insinuate that to ask about the benefits of a product or even ask for a discount. i can do that very straightforwardly without putting a price to other people's work. specially in the art field. but to each their own.

    Hi Mark,
    You said that one shouldn't paint black canvas, and obviously this video is about something else and you didn't explain. I would like to know why.
    I'm a photographer that does a lot of night photography and I'm just about ready to start painting some of my photographs as practice. Most of my photos are very dark. I thought it would be easier to start with black, then work on mid tones the finish the painting with the highlights. An example:

      You can regain that perception of detail, contrast, subtle or simple contrasts, etc. by training yourself to clear your mind and look at something with fresh eyes. You can learn what to do, what to look for and what to ignore. You have to learn how to work with your mind and eyes because they are constantly doing things that undermine many things being done while painting or drawing. Not doing it is very apparent in the results.

    Hello Mark. I have just now introduced myself to one of your videos. Clarity! Thank you! I have a question. One of my personality traits is that I don't like to have a lot of rules.As you know, this can cause problems with all things creative, specifically painting. IAt times I can begin to paint with no picture, no still life information, etc. I've always felt that this should be one way to work,-just let the painting flow from my imagination. It is a much more difficult option that using nature, objects, or a picture. What do you think?

      I find it difficult to paint on black bacause first I have to bring up the light and then push it down again not to have chalky feel to it. And if you mix your blacks you can make them warm or cold, as you need.

    • @squalematic

      One reason is that oil paint becomes more transparent with age, so the black background may start to show through and distort colors and values.

    • @o0ampy0o5
      @o0ampy0o5 7 лет назад +1

      An additional factor to consider is that a computer screen emits light as opposed to an object that reflects light. It is more difficult to determine color and value when the source is light and the mixing palette is using pigment.

    What about colored lights? Or flesh tones with blues/purple colors because of translucency. How would you paint that? (This is what I struggle with the most as an artist) p.s. Love your work!

    • @LetTheWritersWrite
      @LetTheWritersWrite 7 лет назад

      If you have a reference, it's literally about breaking it down one color at a time.

    • @majamuster2470
      @majamuster2470 7 лет назад

      can you elaborate more on that? I also really struggle with this

    • @LetTheWritersWrite
      @LetTheWritersWrite 7 лет назад

      Well, your tendency when you first start is to think about three-dimensional depth. But when you're painting a canvas, it's a flat surface. So, you have to think in sections. It's actually more mathematical than you think. On this section of the canvas, what exact color goes down? You think of nothing else! This technique is called "blocking". With the color checker that Mark teaches you how to use and make, you take it one color at a time. Let's say you want to start with the darkest skin tone. You mix your paint and match it to the darkest skin tone in the photograph and you begin to block it out on your canvas. Anywhere you see the photograph has that exact color, you also put it down on your canvas.
      For translucent and other complex materials, it's the same idea. Don't think of the 3D, tangible material. Rather, study out every single little shade of color it transitions through. And you paint one tiny little shade at a time.
