What? A member of the Traveling Wilburys and he had to write down the words to Lost Highway on the way to a gig? Respect to the dead but he was not a proper country singer
@andyasdf2078 He was a rock and roller and did a beautiful rendition of " Lost Highway" after hearing it once. A talented beautiful soul that Johnny Cash said " Was A Good Man To Ride The River With." RIP John & Tom.
@@andyasdf2078 OF course not he was a Rock N' Roler, not a country singer. But he sang that song 🎵 PERFECTLY, & BEAUTIFULLY even though he never heard it or sang it before! And as Johnny Cash wrote on a Birthday card to Tom - " You're A Good Man To Ride The River With" and of that I have no doubt.
Tom Petty does a superb job here and really captures the spirit of Lost Highway. This version is second only to the Hank Williams original, and that is very, high praise.
@@mar.col.3736 Correct. It was written and recorded by blind country singer/writer Leon Payne in 1948. But I think it can be safely said that the Hank Williams version is the definitive one, in the same way that the definite version of "Crazy" is by Patsy Cline, even though Willie Nelson wrote and recorded it too.
@@mar.col.3736 I too, am a huge Tom Petty fan. Never felt TP was recognized as fully as he should have been, very much like Bob Seger. My music interests cover the spectrum from early roots recordings up to the slim pickings today put out by the major labels today, more interested in promoting the visuals of a "pretty" boy or girl, of limited musical ability, than in any genuine music. The bright spot in today's music world is looking for alternative Folk, Country, Blues, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, Rock, etc where there are many incredibly talented young folks, who unfortunately, will never get a glance from a major label in today's twisted music world. I'm presently on a "roots' kick where I'm bouncing back-and-forth from The original Carter Family, up to the absolutely fascinating 1950's Country-into-Rockabilly-into-Rock era. I've become a huge fan of the fabulous Collins Kids, older sister Lorrie with kid brother Larry, a teen age sister-brother duo, Rockabilly pioneers who should have been in the R&R Hall of Fame as first inductees, but have been sadly forgotten. Lorrie and Larry have sent me down another "rabbit hole" of brother-sister duos, such as Jim-Ed&Maxine Brown, Donnie&Marie Osmond, Karen&Richard Carpenter, etc. Music has endless "rabbit holes" to explore! As someone who spent much of my life on the lost highway, i can tell you the fella that wrote this song understood the misery and Hank and Tom did a great job interpretting it.
Oh man, Tom does such an awesome job on this song. You can hear that he appreciates the song. I wish he had done more country music and more Hank songs.
This is one of the few songs Williams recorded he did not write. It was written by a blind man in the 40's hitchhiking from California to Texas to see his dying Mother. Fantastic job by Petty and the band!!
Leon Payne wrote this wonderful song. First it was sung by Hank Williams sen. Then by Johnny Horton . And here by Tom Petty. All of them did a brilliant Version of this song. TY to them all!!!
petty will forever be in our hearts ... no matter how whole or broken ... thanks again for so many great Hits ... RIP ... " a great man to ride the river with " Hank ...
I totally give homage to this song Lost Highway written by Hank Williams & sung by my favorite song artist Tom Petty. In the 50’s era, my dad, Tommy Soop was a singer & gave Tributes to Hank Williams covering the areas of Canada’s western provinces & USA’s northwestern states. May they all RIP & they are probably jamming in heaven together. What a great event it is to think of 🎶🥰💗💞💖💓❤️💕💖💖💖💖💖
We lost a great one when tom died, fucker could play about anything and make it sound great! And when he got his teeth into a major hit like this, it made you really stop and wanna listen to it over and over! Man, i am sad he's gone!
I came across this song watching Showtime's series "George and Tammy". Loved theirs at the end of the series. Didn't realize it came from Hank Williams. Tom Petty did a wonderful rendition. I am an old rocker, but that Showtime series has given me a new appreciation for old country music, which I am exploring now.
Great upload! Thank you (-: They really could do just about anything together. I like Tom's country-style vocals here. From Hank Williams to The Byrds. What a class song for Tom to choose to cover. Wish Howie was singing harmony and backing vocals on this. Just imagine!
I love Tom speaking about these lyrics. That's what its all about.. And he even repeats it Just so others understand where he's coming from. Great cover!!
Indeed one the most iconic songs of Hank...next to Devil's train...these songs still go straight to the heart..Funny thing is that I first got in touch with C&W traveling parts of the states long distance in a cheap rental back in the 90"s....I traveled a lot of lost highways..I somehow got the underlying emotions of these songs straight on...
Heart touching! Great song! It is on the bonus tracks CD of the Running Down a Dream DVD set. It is worth every penny to get this track alone! Great set, also.
Blind country musican Leon Payne wrote this one while waiting and not having much luck hitch hiking along a highway in 1948. Hank recognized that Leon had struck gold with this one.
He killed it! Wow. I can hardly believe he did it so well. Maybe best ever. Just sayin. To my more modern ear at least ... three chords and the truth.....
This is a cover of the great Hank Williams song, lost highway. It was said one of Bob Dylan's roadies was playing this song and Bob overheard it. He asked about it, and it became the basis for what has been called the greatest R&R song ever, "Like a Rolling Stone". Hank Williams, BTW, has been called the Hillbilly Shakespeare, and that isn't a bit inappropriate. ruclips.net/video/d1iZ6kWOTv0/видео.html
I think the only person that could have covered this better is chris cornell😔 man life sucks when the good ones go. But I can’t complain they gave us more than plenty
Wrote the words down while driving in, never sang it before, you got to be kidding me! Tom was so gifted RIP - beautiful soul.❤
Listen to that mandolin too. Awesome team.

My opinion Tom Petty is amazing as far as song writing the late John Prine and Hank Williams are tops but Tom was great no doubt

Tom Petty was a huge fan of real country music, so it's really no surprise how good a job he did on this song
The great Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. What a loss to music when he passed. R.I.P. Tom.
What a beautiful song..done so well by Tom Petty..he captures the essence of true country singing.
This has to be one of the greatest hidden gems. Can't imagine how this song doesn't get more air play. Thanks so much for posting.

Not a Hank Williams original song!
Leon Payne wrote this song.
One of the few songs Hank did not write.
Hank didn't write it but made it his own when he sang it. Tom and the Heartbreaker's did a great job with it. Just wonderful.
RIP Tom Petty.
Unforgettable.

Apart from hank Williams, this version by Tom is the best I have heard.
Have always loved this song. No surprise TP & HBs not only did it well, they made it better.

Great cover. It took future artists and arrangements, better studios to really hear Hank's genius.
I feel that the writer, Leon Payne would have approved of Tom’s version.
Great version of the Leo Payne song. The Waterboys also did a good cut on this one .
