- Star Trek Online announced that they'd be introducing a token that allowed players to change the species and/or gender of their characters (a feature that's has been requested by players for a long time) and has finally posted the info on how the token will work and how to get it.

Yes, they do that would be a very cool idea.
I wish they would make the Romulans and Jem'Hadar their own seperate factions entirely. The Romulans in particular already have all of the infrastructure within the game, so should not need to align with Fed or KDF.

I wish they would allow players to use an "Species Template" for the Alien species. Like if a player selects the "Human template" on Alien, the visual customizations and sliders should behave like they do for typical Humans. It would make using the Alien species to make characters look similar to other species a bit easier.
What they really need to do is add Borg Prosthetics for account unlock. That way I can make my KDF Borg character a KDF Alien that has been Borg-ified.
They should also just add the 11th trait spot to all the other species. But, keep the species specific traits as a selectable if they want to run it. That would be a major W.

When I first got into STO it was when F2P happened. I made a Female Andorian using a lot of the defaults before the facial and graphic updates. Although I'm glad to have the option I like to think my MC is not only an original but also a time capsule of the STO in the past. Still, great to have the option.
I also thought it was strange that caitian where not an opinion for TOS when the first time we saw caitian it was the TOS animated series and they appear in the TOS era moives
I agree. Their argument against that was they wanted it to feel like the original series, and Caitians weren't introduced until the animated series. Just as silly as not letting them have access to Alien characters.

I'm not too likely to use this myself - at most, I might change my Trill character to a Joined Trill for reasons, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with the current species and gender of all my toons. That said, I'm really glad for all the people who really wanted this.
And yeah, it would be cool if they could sort out the other FED species for TOS/DSC toons, not just for access to aliengen for TOS, but since some species, like Caitians theoretically should be available for TOS anyway, and the long-promised DSC Andorians have yet to materialise, it'd be nice to get access to those species on those sub-factions.
(For that matter, they could kill two birds with one stone if they added Aliengen to the Dominion, but called it "Changeling", it'd appease DOM players who want the extra trait slot, and appease the people who want Changelings! I already have a FED aliengen that I pretend is a Changeling anyway to justify having all his costumes be wildly different, so they may as well just make that the case for the Dominion faction proper)
I'm going to switch my Alien main to Andorian because Andorians rock, and I got so much high-end crap slapped on my toon now I can live without that single trait.
tbh 750 for a race change ISNT bad, considering other MMOs are usually 10-15 bucks. So being able to do 3 changes for that price is amazing.
really a lot of my end game stuff is space barbie, while I always regret picking a trill, for my main i will probably be picking either Human or liberated borg, few of my Chars will be going to alien.
I really wish they offered the lib Borg and telaxian as a species unlock since Epic players don't have access to the lifetime sub.
I'm definitely waiting to see if other Starfleet species are freed up to the TOS faction. Specifically, the premium Aener and Caitian species. If Cryptic were to offer a Premium Federation-Orion species for the Starfleet faction to buy? They would make money twice from me. Buy the species unlock. Then the Species Change Token toward one of my too many 2409 Starfleet faction Captains.
Was tempted to change my character to liberated borg after the last episode, but am probably going alien.
1st of the bat I want to point out everyone by now would be a fleet admiral not a captain. secondly they should have done this at launch of the game. in any way there's an exploit in the game where you can transfer items to a new character. so you can change your gender for free. and you can reclaim ships from the store from an old character
Here's hoping for TOS Catians soon. The Enterprise literally has a Catian bridge officer at the time of the STO 23rd century story for crying out loud!
Andorian + Tellerite captains for Disco just make sense and should have been there from that option's launch. And, given Tendi's popularity, why is there no Federation Orion option yet?
Frankly, this feature should have been in the game from launch. Though, personally I'll only be using it at some point to change a TOS Vulcan to an Andorian (or Catian).
I am really excited about this, as I would like to make my main character an alien, for the extra traits. I just hope that this does not trigger the recurring bug that erases your traits each time you change instances.
I find it strange they are thinking of opening up TOS and DSC to 2409 Species after Al and Jesse left (If I remember correctly they were fully against it)

Did they say why? I know an earlier comment said that Caitians weren't TOS to them, instead TAS, but were other reasons given?
PRO TIP: Once you have bought the token, copy your character over to the Tribble test server and test it out there first to see if there’s any unexpected consequences!
Also, temporarily move any non-character-bound items to account bank or other characters, just in case!
very cool token, will be nice for those who got into the higher end DPS chasing and have all their gear on, say, a tellarite but want the extra trait slot, doesn't impact me tbh beyond maybe previewing what ifs of how my toons could've looked

Perhaps, but you can already alter your character's appearance in the tailor, not just the uniform, but also the body and face. Character customization that's post-creation of the character, so from a game-play view point, it makes sense to do it at the tailor because that's where existing character customization services already are. If you put it in the sickbay, it'll just confuse people trying to use the token.
yeah glad this is a option now, I spent a lot of effort to recreate my "ex-borg" rom cap as a "ex-borg" alien cap so i know the pain there. (granted i was also going Sci to Tactical so this token wouldn't have helped in that regards)
Still personally i don't have any need for them now, but if they CAN open up the full selection so i can go full joined Trill Disco cap on a alt, i would in fact give them $7.50.
TOS and DISCO should have the same races if you ask me (the four founding races and alien)

i wonder if the char change will reset every trait meaning your going to have to rebuy all the traits again, mind you i can see some kind of bug to do this.
Anyone know why I can't use the captain alteration token to change a klingon into a gorn/lethean/nausicaan... no issue changing into the other species (XboxX)
A token I will not use. I'm glad everyone has now the option to change if they want but my Alien characters are mostly Alien because the Species I would like isn't available (Deltan, Chameloid) my others are especially chosen to be the way they are.
I can't change my main char. Everything she has done, she is my fav. The outfit and all the good memories. The secondary chars are weak. Spending 750 Zen on changing them makes no sense. I could just make a new char with the gender and race I want. If I had options to change to tac I would be so yes but maybe no. If I cant keep my blue outfit it's a no. I don't think as it is I will be getting one.

Yeah, that's another thing a lot of people have been wanting for a long time. I imagine it's a very different technical hurdle than what this token does. I bet the big problem is how many traits and other things are tied specifically to your class. Like, if you're an engineer that has a number of personal traits that are exclusive to engineer characters, but if you can change to a science character, what happens to those traits? Obviously you can't use them, so what happens to them? And even if they decide on what to do with them, more importantly, can they get the system to actually do it?

Well, the funny thing is that Star Trek has genetic engineering technology, not to mention what can be done with transporters. While genetic upgrades are illegal among humans, they do apparently use genetic technology for medical purposes (or they have, both in novels and in the techno-babble in various episodes).
As a general rule this would mean that in Trek anyone who wanted to be a specific gender could just be that gender, there would be no "transexual" humans at least, as in men feeling they were "born wrong" or whatever as they could just actually become women via technology. One of the big reasons why I support taking the limits off real world genetic engineering as I feel it will end all kinds of bigotry. Among other things there is no way to be racist if you can't tell what race someone actually was when someone can just change their skin tone and features.
It's sort of like Starfield when they seem to have been hyping the transgender thing, right there in character creation, yet there is literally an in game corporation you can go to and re-make your entire character, including gender. It's presented as being fully in world, including supporting lore, so there is literally no reason for anyone to be trans gender anymore as technology solved the entire problem for them.
The problem is that we've allowed social politics to make it so "Transgender" is a political punkhammer and it's own thing, I doubt many people claiming it are even genuine. Thus as it's own "identity" it's demanding representation for purposes of power even in things where it clearly makes no sense. Strictly speaking they should be happy to see a concept where the problem has been solved as people can change genders through science or magic or whatever, but the fact that they aren't and want specifically trans politics to be inserted, makes it clear it's not a real issue, but a power thing. Simply making a female character and having it in your headcanon that they used to be a biological dude or whatever doesn't work for them, as they want the power of walking around in drag in front of other people that don't care for it. They basically want to have say Christopher Pike run around in a dress in drag, not have it simply mentioned in a file somewhere that they were born as Christina Pike, transitioned at 16, became an actual dude, now act like a dude seamlessly, and nobody really knows or cares about this if they did, so it just never gets mentioned.... which is pretty much what the endgame is supposed to be.
The problem is when social politics become about visibility and power rather than the actual issues.
@@jeremyrichard2722 everything is power thing, playing with genders and ideologies and on the race card is specifically designed to incite divide & conquer tactics used on humanity! And it works supreme on most of the uneducated masses. Hence why we are where we are today and the world events...its all one big game of manipulation and those things in any normal society are irrelevant.

As long as I can't change the stupid Jem'Hadar to a Vorta (Alien) this is worthless. I never understood why they didn't include this. Jem'Hadar are glorified grunts, they don't command shit.
Vorta would mean another storyline as a Jem Hardar, and STO is by all means focused on cost efficient solutions. And I guess we will only see more of this with Deca.
@@CRYOKnox True, but ingame storyline is marginal anyway when it comes to Jem'Hadar - Recruit and endgame is much more important and at least it would provide some headcanon.
