Did the Rolling Stones Rip-off The Beatles? John Lennon Thought So!

  • John Lennon expressed the opinion that The Rolling Stones were influenced by The Beatles in several aspects, citing that after The Beatles did something musically or stylistically, The Stones would often do something similar not long after. Lennon pointed out that this pattern seemed to follow in terms of musical direction, public image, and the types of songs they released. For instance, after The Beatles innovated with new studio techniques or explored different musical genres, The Rolling Stones would sometimes release music that reflected similar innovations or genre explorations.
Lennon's comments reflected a broader perception of competition and influence among bands in the 1960s music scene, where The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were two of the biggest names. However, it's also worth noting that both bands were part of a larger musical movement that was influencing all its participants. Both groups were experimenting with new sounds, incorporating diverse influences into their music, and pushing the boundaries of what popular music could be at the time.
Despite Lennon's assertions, members of The Rolling Stones, such as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, have offered their perspectives, noting that while there was a friendly rivalry, there was also mutual respect and influence going both ways. The relationship between the two bands was complex, characterized by both competition and camaraderie.
The idea that The Stones ripped off The Beatles is a matter of interpretation. While there were undoubtedly instances of cross-pollination in their musical ideas and public personas, it can also be argued that this was part of a broader trend of mutual influence and shared evolution within the rock and pop music scenes of the 1960s.

Imo the rolling stones didn't become their own band until the Beatles broke up and the majority of their music through the 70s is much better than the 60s because it doesn't sound like they're trying to be anyone else. So yes. But that goes for many bands in the 60s. It's hard to fathom just how massive the Beatles were compared to basically any other artist at the time

You may recognize the name: Klaus Vormann. Stu Sutcliffe and George were so impressed with Vormann's hairstyle that they asked Astrid to give them the same cut. Then John and Paul reluctantly followed suit. Astrid took those iconic early Beatles pictures that are now worth millions. And Klaus Vormann remained their friend and collaborator for many decades. He designed their unique album covers and played bass for them at their studio recordings. He was a lifelong friend to George Harrison, even staying with him at Friar Park. De nada.

True the stones early on were a step behind the beatles, but by the late 60’s, the stones were the more influential band. By that point, they were fusing rock and roll with the blues, soul, r&b, country, reggae, and even disco. The stones were less polished for sure, but they were musically a better band from 68 on. The beatles on the other hand, were starting to sound dated, stale and tired, and of course, were essentially broken up by 1970. The stones continued churning out hit records up until the 90s.

No. The Rolling Stones didn’t rip-off the Beatles. Like a lot of groups at the time the Stones were influenced by some things the Beatles did. I’m sure it was hard not to be influenced by the Beatles to a degree. For all the criticism Their Satanic Majesties Request gets for “copying” Sgt. Pepper, it sounds nothing like it and was no different than what other bands were doing at the time. It was the psychedelic era in music. And John was also wrong about “We Love You” being “All You Need Is Love”. The two songs were about two different things, and Mick Jagger wrote “We Love You” several months before the Beatles recorded “All You Need Is Love”, so how did he copy it?

@@butchduganno they did not. The Stones started off playing American blues music which sounded nothing like what the Beatles were doing at the time. There were some influences at times but they weren’t always copying the Beatles six month later. Listen to Revolver (August 1966), and then listen to Between the Buttons (January 1967) and tell me they were imitating the Beatles.

Let it Bleed? Yeah, came before Let it Be. Magesties and Pepper are musically way different. Fake beef. They were all friends, just the first beef in music. It worked but not like Biggie/Tupac, Nas and Jay-Z. It all began with The Stones and The Beatles. Which the Stones won. Beatles get an orchestra the Stones had Brian Jones. After Jones died, Mick Taylor took The Stones to another level. Love both bands. But the Stones still do it. Half the Beatles are dead, maybe 3/4 of the original band is dead (Paul McCartney/Billy Shears.

He wasn't a phony because he preached about love. He was always turning that sentiment inward too. He knew he had a lot of inner conflict and he shared it openly. His art was often his therapy working through his horrible childhood in blue collar, war torn Liverpool. His dad ditched the family, his mom was killed. He sings in beautiful boy, life is what happens when you're busy making other plans. In Mother he crescendos upward, crying momma don't go...daddy come home. Heartwrenching. He did have a sharp tongue, but only as he spoke his mind. He never pretended to be full of love, he only imagined it.

If anyone cannot perform their job, thay are going to be replaced. And musicians are not the exception.
There are other people who have stated that Brian Jones was spiraling out of control because of drug use. Also, that has happened to a lot of individuals in the entertainment industry.
Also, musicians, singers and others in the entertainment industry. Have switched bands or occupations by performing in plays, movies, or television productions.
I view the music industry the same as the movie industry. For example. A band produced an album. Doesn't matter what band or album. Now that album must sell copies, and the band will promote it by performing live or streaming on a platform.
