This amp in not a prototype. It is the 5G4 circuit of the early 1960 Super-Amp -- which did of course use tube rectification. in 1960, the entire Fender amplifier line received updated cabinets and new chassis designs emerged on most models over the next two or three years. In 1960, the Super-Amp received it's first redesign of the 60's resulting in this amp, the 5G4 circuit. It retained it's tube rectifier but got a new onboard vibrato. These are easily identified by their 5 pre-amp tubes chassis. By the end of 1960, the amp circuit was again modified to become the solid state rectified, 6 pre-amp tube 6GA. The 6GA circuit also did not last long, being replaced in 1961, by the updated 6GA-4 circuit. Then in 1963, the Super-Amp became the Super Reverb. To suggest that this was some sort of prototype resulting from Fender 'experimenting with circuits' is a stretch. This amp is simply a transition model that lived briefly during a major upgrade period in which Fender transitionmed from it's 50's to 60's designs. It's rarity is simply due to it's short life during which only a few were made. Sounds fabulous though...
The brownface Bandmasters were not tube rectified, and neither were the blackface Bandmasters. And yes. This amp sounds fab; but there was not a thing wrong with the Webers unless someone just wanted to change from ceramic to ALniCo.
That's a NICE looking 335!! Love the color... Reminds me of Chris Cornell's. Not to mention the obviously amazing amp and you actually know how to play it too which is also a plus.
Unfortunately in the 80s I wasn't savvy enough to realize most of the vintage amps I grabbed needed servicing and why they sounded bad Oh well live and learn Could have bought bunches of 60's strats man Everyone was trading them in for super strats w HBs and whatnot Glad I grabbed two 65's when the price was reasonable Could part out a neck and make my money back on both LoL 😉
Only comparison I see is the twin speakers but other than that, the wiring is different, there’s no reverb, and instead of volume tremolo it’s harmonic tremolo

Nice playing! What are those pickups - Filtertron clones?
How does this compare to a Twin reverb?

Big Al Anderson from NRBQ

Those speakers are VERY mid-rangey ... Not a bad thing ... just very mid-rangey.
