  • In this data visualization I look at the top countries with the most cell phone connections, one of the most important service in any country. Early cellular networks were developed in the 1950s and 1960s, but it wasn't until the 1980s and 1990s that cellular technology became widely available. Since then, the use of cell phones has exploded, with billions of people around the world now using them for communication and access to the internet. We'll start in 1990 because that's when prices of phones and service were becoming more accessible to the masses and when services were becoming widely available. I also look at the connections per 100,000 individuals in that country to get a more even comparison.
Did you see your country on here? If not, were do you think it stands in comparison to these? Do you remember when you first got connected?

The description says “connections per 100,000 people”. So, by the end suggesting that there were 2.88 connections per person in Hong Kong, for instance. I’m assuming that would mean cell phones, cars, … anything with a SIM.

I came of age when Japan was considered the one and only avant-garde of cellphone trends, with many new (carrier-specific) feature phones coming out each and every quarter, and the rest of the world split between Motorola and Nokia, so I don't know what surprises me more: That Japan was in the top ten during the mid-'90s, but not the majority of the above era. Or that it recently resurged, long after Apple and Samsung have stolen its thunder. I guess it might be due to a surge of robotic caretakers and other smart devices. Also, it amuses me to no end that Austria's times are a near-perfect opposite.

Thank you very much for the video and providing that data, but why doesn't the US come out in the vast majority of years? I think that since 2005 it no longer appears and it is one of the countries that has the most Internet connections, in fact they invented the Internet, to put it mildly.

This is per 100k inhabitants, similar to per capita. But in total the US, China and India are on top.

This is per 100,000 people, so every hongkonger has 3 phone on avg (or more likely 3 devices that useing sim cards)

There's a world outside campus. It was a widely reported fact in the early '00s that US had far less cellphones per capita than Western Europe.

I don't know how to accept this one. I was surprised to see a country of 6 million like Salvador make the list while America wasn't even on it for most of the video. Connections per month? Per capita? Per month capita? I mean what is it really saying? Of all the vids so far I have to admit I don't like this one and it's confusing and I even tend to not accept or believe it. It looks completely inaccurate by logic alone. idk.
