  • Theme park rides stand as one of the few forms of popular entertainment that can vanish with no way to experience them once again. So, how can such a cherished art form be preserved? Kevin Perjurer, the creative mind behind Defunctland, has made it his business to document the fleeting nature of theme parks, both the good and the bad. In this episode, Adam and Kevin discuss how theme parks shape the cultures that give rise to them, the extent to which our own history is molded and packaged for our entertainment, and the pivotal role RUclips historians play in dismantling the everyday myths we tell ourselves.

I love your avatar. It's half way between the 2 state plus lip flaps lio convoy uses, and the camera driven live full motion avatars sometimes used by someone like sarafina. It's very appropriate to the Kevin online persona. Are you puppeteering the arms with keyboard commands or some other method? I note three states of arm movement, carefully selected to the types of comments you express. Very skillfull. I'm only surprised it doesn't look like brad pitt.

I was drawn to Defunctland because my grandfather was part of an engineering team that worked on a bunch of Epcot attractions back when they were first built, including Spaceship Earth and The Living Seas.
The sad nostalgia I felt when Living Seas became Finding Nemo themed hit me weirdly hard, and I always wished there were more people who cared about the old rides.
And Defunctland is clearly working from a similar mindset, putting down some of the best content on RUclips.

The thing that made Perjurer's doc on the Disney theme so memorable for me, was another happy accident. His video came out within days or weeks of hbomberguy releasing his video on the Minecraft oof sound. Both ended up being stories that got away from these creators in their depth and scope, but landed on opposite ends of the creativity spectrum, While Kevin found and brought to light someone deserving of praise for their work, and so did Harry, Harry had no choice but to end up focusing on the man who went to fantastical efforts to claim credit for work that wasn't his, and hide the legacy of those that really did the work. Watching both stories in succession really brought them into amazing contrasting focus. One time the Youttube algorithm didn't fail me.

Even if you didn't watch the Wiggles as a late 90s kid or were old enough to have children watching it, they were a pretty big phenomenon in the US (children's shows arena), as big as maybe Arthur, Blues Clues, Barney, or Dora the Explorer which I'd imagine Adam would know of. Perhaps if he saw a photo to jog his memory.

Like, I was an adult by the time the Wiggles got huge, but even I had heard through social osmosis that "The Wiggles is some kind of children's band?" I definitely didn't understand just how deep the mania went until I watched the Defunctland video about it.

      @AlexaDonne 10 месяцев назад +19

Adam is my exact age and until recent adulthood I had never heard of the Wiggles as a US phenomenon; only as a joke I heard in the UK about them when I lived there. He genuinely and easily simply missed it. We're too old for it, as well as too young (having been older teens in the late 90s). Same reason he has zero context for the Disney Channel theme--same as me, A Poor who did not grow up with cable. Plenty of pop culture is not universal, and it's actually MORE interesting to probe into *why* people of various ages/background don't know about something that seems super obvious to you.

I really wanted to be a dolphin trainer at Marineland in Palos Verdes, CA. Unfortunately, they closed while I was in 8th grade and, after the owners killed 1/3 of the animals transported to Sea World San Diego, it destroyed my dreams by the cruelty and callousness inflicted by Harcourt, Brace & Jovanovich.

I have been a fan of Kevin Perjurer when "Defunctland" was a project to build a virtual theme park filled with attractions that no longer exist. His video on the Snow White wrap party is probably the video I share the most on this platform. I was a casual Disney fan, but after I started watching Defunctland I branched out to other theme park vid creators, videos of people exploring parts of Disney that are closed to the public/abandoned, criticism of older Disney movies, etc. I will admit, however, that one thing I was excited about when I saw the interview was maybe seeing what Mr. Perjurer looks like. :(

Interesting fact regarding the point made about the walk-able nature of Buffalo, NY: Buffalo's park and parkway system was designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. His portfolio includes famous parks and zoos like Central Park in NYC, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Cadwalader Park in Trenton, NJ, and the Niagara Falls Reservation state park. The radial layout of the city itself was designed by Joseph Ellicott, based on the original 1791 design for Washington DC (itself loosely based on Paris). Unfortunately, a lot of the surrounding towns and suburbs fell prey to the other (in)famous civil architect, Robert Moses. Thankfully, Buffalo is slowly undoing a lot of the damage that Moses did and re-implementing a lot of the parkways and walk-able spaces that were replaced by express ways and highways in the 1940s and 50s.

The "somebody wanted to make this" immediately made me think of the TV show community, and how much the early years of that show felt like Dan Harmon's will manifest, even though it was made by a writer's room. Most tv shows I see have a plurality of voices, but this one stands out in my mind of a 21st century example of the one man doing his thing.

    Sehnsucht
Is the German word that most closely relates to what we call nostalgia in English. In Old High German it translates to "sickness of the painful craving".
    Nostalgia
Greek origin; Nostos (return, home), and Algos (pain) roughly means to feel acute homesickness in the moment.
There is a melancholic longing to Defunctland documentaries that sits with you but the occasional well-timed joke helps to break it up and make it bearable. Thanks for the content guys.

I’m glad Kevin noted that our concept of the 50s is based on the 80s. I’ve been thinking about that a lot since Paul Reubens’s passing. I have a deep love of the 80s but not the usual love people have. It’s not He-Man and Madonna, it’s the B-52s and Pee-Wee Herman. The 80s that were an over saturated funhouse mirror of the 50s and early 60s. Half of goth rock is straight up just surf rock.

46:37 I think Adam's point about the reappraisal of George Lucas and the prequels applies to Michael Eisner as well. As Disney's CEO, Eisner was a powerful guy with a lot of weird ideas, some of which were fantastic and others not so much. But even his blunders have been reevaluated in a positive manner because that sort of unleashed risktaking is arguably a better creative strategy than what we have seen for nearly 20 years under Bob Iger, that being a more corporate approach with several colossal acquisitions and a heavy focus on franchises and existing intellectual property.
