having never heard this clip before, the reveal of the punchline with the unfolding letter was the funniest fucking delivery ever
Exactly. I've never seen this stream and wasn't expecting it at all
I highly recommend watching those streams! I go back every once in a while and rewatch them, some of the funniest streams by him in my opinion because of how absurd the AI is.
I honestly really want him to return and do more, especially with how much ai as a whole has improved.
It's from his AI generated text stream lol, there's hours of it, absolutely hilarious and you have to watch it. Some of the hardest I've laughed on this channel.

2:09 stuff like this "I am sorry for calling you a liar and a thief" is why I think AI has to be kinda bad in order to be brilliant. It understands that in both the case of an old woman yelling at you, and of you discovering a letter on her body, the same character is communicating with the same person.
But an author who understands that and DOESN'T understand that the words of a letter have to be written before you find it is literally unimaginable. A human could never have made that mistake. So it's surprising in a way completely different from ordinary comedy.
Modern text generators wouldn't make this mistake either. By improving they've gotten worse.
Exactly!! All modern AI output is bland and uninspired. Back when it was pretty bad, you'd always get the funniest responses.

You are right, it's easy to make a mistake and say something stupid about AI stuff. I know that much very well.
Do you mind explaining though? Maybe I should have elaborated on what I meant by "a human could never have made that mistake", because of course an LLM can only write things a human could have written, it's only trained on things a human already wrote. But if a human wrote the conversation-continuing letter, it would be insincere and intentional in a way that wouldn't read as a funny mistake. Because human authors know, in a way bad LLMs don't, how causality affects what can and can't be said in a letter. And human readers know that human authors know that.
Or maybe it was something else I said that was wrong. Careless use of the word "understand", certainly, but I think that's industry standard terminology now. We all know they don't actually do any understanding, it's just a short way of talking about what they can and can't write.

I thought your explanation of why it was funny and brilliant was really good, actually, and I didn't even have a problem with the use of the word "understand" in this case because this particular discussion is about what is in the AI's memory.
It "comprehends" that the person who just called Jerma a liar and a thief is Elena, and that the same person, Elena, is the one who wrote the letter that Jerma found, but in its randomness, it composes a letter as if it were just written despite that being physically impossible, which is a mistake that you could only make if you assume that the letter is written... when it is being picked up. Which makes sense when considering that for the AI, the letter only existed when it was first mentioned, after Elena already died.
Obviously, you get all this, it was your comment and all, but if anyone's reading, I hope this helps clear it up. This was GPT-2, so it literally is just the combination of an inferior LLM + the nuances of GPT text generation + the right randomness settings + a randomly funny generation that makes this so brilliant, and this being an outright worse GPT model plays a pretty significant role in it.
I love how at it transitions from 2d to 3d/irl at 1:22 I also love how they use their real hands to open the letter 2:10 jfjfnfncnjkf the unfolding to reveal the kill all animals is incredible

Man back in 2019 Text algorithms were so absurdly random that almost any story you went into turned into an absurdist comedy, now with the current models everything is much more sane but still somewhat funny and you really can have some actually fun scenarios with the Ai. Want hug out the homophobia out of a closeted Mewtwo through the power of empathy? Sure why not! Fight in circles over why Brawl is a good game with a Sweaty Melee Pichu main? You can do that! But something makes me miss these early days, back when it wasnt in the mainstream news and what not...
