  • Today we explore making a super small HHO generator using some small contact lense cases! Ever since I've stumbled upon the DIY hydrogen oxygen makers I've always wanted to try doing one myself! turns out its actually really easy to do! This project is a fun (although much more complicated) than making matchstick rockets!

    I'd just like to warn everyone about the dangers of hydrogen/oxygen mix.
    I had about 200ml of the gas, which unfortunately ignited, leaving me with an exploded container in pieces everywhere. I couldn't hear a lot for about 2 days, come day 3 the constant ringing which was predominantly what I was hearing somewhat subsided. That was a few years ago. I still notice that my one ear has worse hearing than the other ear. My ears also ring a lot more easily when exposed to loud noises than before...
    I'd just like to warn others about how little of this explosive gas you need to cause permanent hearing loss..
    Wear earmuffs and goggles, and stay save folks.

      Jotham B Lol when I was ten something like that happened, was making an HHO torch with like 24v, but no flashback arrestor.. The gas production slowed down for some reason and the torch traveled back into the gatorade bottle.. Bro me and my brother were laughing so hard because that bottle was all over the garage..
      .
      So TLDR: USE FLASHBACK ARRESTORS, and make sure the tube to what you're igniting is as short as possible or even build the arrestor into the thing you'll be igniting.....

    A friend filled a balloon with HHO, then held the balloon against his sweater covered belly to tie off the end. The static electricity from the sweater ignited the gas and blew the windows out of the barn, removed his eyebrows and most of his hair, and he's now deaf in one ear. Great contraption Peter, love the deco/science style.

    Salt works to make the water conductive also, and won't burn you. I got pretty good output with saltwater in an HHO generator I made once. Stainless steel wire can be bought cheap at farm supply stores and used to make the electrodes. It holds up for awhile, even in the saltwater.

    Your dogs terrified of loud noises because his sense of hearing is so much better than yours. So while you get to have ear plugs in, your dog has to hear unexpected loud bangs without any protection. Not only is your dog scared, but it's also probably hurt. I'd suggest not having your dog around when doing explosive experiments, for sake of your dog's ears because you clearly care about yours. Why not extend that to your dog?

    -Question?
    Is it more efficient to have like a Tesla car system, minus the electric motor and replace it with a HHO generator and a combustion engine, or is the energy density of HHO not worth it? The alternator could recharge the batteries and you would be using water as a fuel source instead of petrol.

    • @chucksandos8939
      @chucksandos8939 6 лет назад

      Google information about -'Steven Meier's call'- 'Stanley Meyer's water fuel cell', please. Goog luke!

    • @Invisiblejihadi
      @Invisiblejihadi 6 лет назад +2

      Ryley wouldn't be efficient. A big drawback of combustion engines are that they are inefficient. Electric motors are connected directly to the battery and can reach efficiencies close to 100%
      If you used a hho generator you'd have some efficiency loss in the generator and a lot of efficiency loss in the combustion engine. Effectively you'd have to carry much more batteries than a comparable pure electric car

    • @PKMartin
      @PKMartin 6 лет назад

      The alternator cannot charge the batteries using energy it derived from fuel made using the batteries, that would be free energy. Battery -> water -> HHO -> engine -> wheels is much less efficient than battery -> motor -> wheels.
      Water is not a fuel. Water is NOT a fuel. Repeat after me: WATER is NOT a FUEL.

    • @Invisiblejihadi
      @Invisiblejihadi 6 лет назад

      Ryley oh yeah lol. As someone's pointed out you can forget about recharging your own batteries

    • @ryley6077
      @ryley6077 6 лет назад

      I get the law of conservation of energy. Its not free energy because the water is being consumed in the process is it not? The alternator derives its energy from the combustion engine.
      So battery -> water -> engine -> alternator/ Wheels -> battery.
      And yes I know water is not a fuel, it's the hydrogen that's the fuel, but isn't the water being consumed in the process of making that hydrogen?

    I've used baking soda as an electrolyte. It's fantastic. Not as good as the caustic stuff, but still very effective and much less dangerous.

    In school we made experiments with hydrogen and oxygen separation. And one day, someone forgot (from the previous class) to turn the generator off.
    Comes class, our class had a different experiment concerning van der graaf generators. Pretty damned cool, my ears rang like hell, but pretty damn cool.

    Game: Guess what Pete makes from random snippets of a video.
    From this one: explosions, bags with a gas, hacking a lighter, little vials with tubes in them, a stained and stamped vial holder, safety glasses on most the whole video, gloves, earplugs, battery, water, and a powder.

    Here's a helpful little tip. When trying to cut thin sheet metal with a handheld jig saw, sandwich the metal sheet between two pieces of wood and it will make a nice clean cut without bouncing up and down. This technique also works for cutting thin plastic sheeting.

    You add the base to water to prevent it etching your glass ware and the soap feeling is the base turning the data on / in your skin into soap ;) cool lil build though and loving the fact you're using a hydrogen generator via electrolysis oh and if memory serves you could just use sodium carbonate and if I recall correctly it will be a better pH for your purpose :)

    I’d love to see something like a remote controlled ski car or something along those lines. Using an ice skate blade or something, there’s about to be a deep freeze in my area and it just sparked my imagination to see if you could make a vehicle (on small scale) for on the ice!!!

    Bubblers serve 2 main functions. 1st is that hydrogen and oxygen bubbles popping in the hydrogen generator cause a water and KOH mist (lye water), where the bubbler can remove most of the KOH from the gas streem. And secondly, in setups without flash back arrestors, a largely full bubbler can limit the volume of gas ignited inside a container. But a flashback to the hydrogen generator chamber is not much of a problem assuming you don't have a huge dead space were HHO can accumulate.

    A few years ago i made some dirty salt water electrolysis in a PET bottle. The straw i used for the gas coming out kind of flew in the ai, when i ignited it. Also the bottle juped a bit. This was fun

    Peter, have you ever made a hot-air balloon, out of a dry-cleaning bag, a copper wire hoop to hold the bag open at the bottom, and an aluminum tart tin to hold fuel? We used to suspend the tart tin under the bag using a few lengths of copper wire and then we poured a few grams of methanol into the tart tin. Light the methanol, no wick needed, and hold the bag up to let the flame heat the air inside. After a minute or so, it would go airborn on a cold day. Try it!
