This happened to me this morning I got out while it was running went to the passenger side couldn't unlock the door tried to fob the Fob didn't work got back in it drove it a little bit stopped at the store but it wouldn't start back up I tried several things of the fob trying to restart it so then I just exited a vehicle locked it and unlocked it got in it and everything worked fine it might be part of the anti theft that's built into it
Yeah it’s interesting! Your seems like a mild occurrence of what happened in this video. I tried the get out of cat/ lock and unlock and re start it method in this vid but no luck. It took a battery swap to do it in the fob (dealer said this is a common occurrence) and fob battery drain can happen 3-5 times per year if you keep it in a pocket closely with a piece of technology such as a cellphone or AirTag as the two pieces of tech drain each others batteries.
Thanks for sharing this info hopefully Toyota will have enough recalls in order to fix this issue as it is a good looking nice size vehicle with great features . best of luck at the dealer
Did your car say “Key not detected” ? If it’s a dead battery in the fob, you can hold the fob next to the Start/Stop button for about 5 seconds and it will be ready to start. This is standard thing in cars now. You can test by removing the battery from the fob. What was the status of your 12V car battery ? A parasitic drain can cause it to discharge, such as the safety connect cellular system using the battery when off. That would not affect your fob though. Perhaps it was simply a bad battery got into a new key fob.
Hello, when the fob became unresponsive, so did the car. I was surprised the car didn’t even display “key not detected” when it happened. I took out the battery and put it back, same problem, no power to car and fob unnoticed. After I swapped the battery, it took about 20 minutes before the car could sense the fob to the point of starting it, but I could lock and unlock it right away. After this happened I talked to the dealer and they told me to kiss the fob to the start button and hold it for 4 seconds, this did the trick. That said, this has now happened to me again 2x and I have had to use the fob kiss the start button method to get it going, otherwise the fob and car were totally unresponsive, as those 2 times the fob couldn’t even lock or unlock.
I love Toyota's, I will only buy them. I have a 08 Highlander Limited with over 271k miles and just had to replace the water pump. Also replaced the thermostat and serpentine belt, even though the belt only had a couple of tiny cracks. Being in a garage I think has a lot to do with it. Definitely getting the Grand Highlander in 6 months after I move. Going for the Max version, hopefully Toyota's reliability hasn't decreased.
I was so worried about that happening after I got it going. Since this happened, it happened again after I went to the dealer and had it diagnosed. This time though just had to lock and unlock with drive connect then use the fob to hold the start button for 4 seconds and it got it going. I have a video coming out going over what the dealer recommended you do to try and prevent this from happening soon.
@Erikzapp thank you for providing content on this. I will be getting my GH hybrid in 1 week, and I waited about 5 months. I got everything I wanted except it is coming with black rims. Honestly, not a fan of the black rims but it is like the only GH hybrid that is coming in to massachusetts so I'm not gonna be picky
@@rya-zq7ky Sounds like a nice spec! I think the black rims would be nice. Good call on the hybrid, it’s a big car and you will thank yourself with the fuel savings you get 👍
Interesting video. My Grand Limited Hybrid is scheduled to arrive 2nd week of April. Coastal Cream. I was able to get everything I ordered and nothing I didn't want. Except, I wanted gray interior and got black. I am a drywall finisher and wanted gray to hide the dust from my tools and clothing. I'm excited ! Waited one year.
Isn't there a spare key built into the FOB? I see you take it out and set it on the center console at 1:17 seconds. Can't you use that to start the car?
so you also need to pay for the drive connect subscription past the one year free trial period in order to get this to troubleshoot. Otherwise, the key fob battery replacement itself wouldnt have solve the issue. 😤
Apparently, it just happens if you leave your fob too close to another piece of technology like a cell phone or iPad and from what I’m told it’s totally normal. Even though it’s never been a problem for any other vehicle, I’ve owned with keyless entry. 😃
"Toyota Reliability"...... in the older generations it was true. but in these newer cars, not so much. Why is that? Perhaps it is because Toyota has succumbed to "corporate greed" and is cutting quality in their drive for profits? Or perhaps because the "reliability" of the past years is due to vehicles being made in Japan using Japanese workers and Japanese made parts instead of North American workers using parts made in the USA instead of Japan? I don't know, but the "coincidence" is noticeable. hhmmmmm.
Definitely. Coincidence it definitely noticeable. It’s interesting though, on my 2023 f150, the build quality and overall structural metal quality is actually quite good, especially compared to the GH. I still do love the GH, but the super thin exterior metal is very questionable
Key lost power to the point where I couldn’t hold the key to the start button for 4 seconds to start it in service mode until I had replaced the fob battery and waited 20 minutes until the car sensed the key.

Did you hold the key fob up to the ignition switch?

Please add words like battery dead etc to your video so that it's easy to search this when something like this happens. Thanks
Tip Taken!
Good to know. It never occurred to me to carry a spare fob battery around.
Any update from the dealership visit?
Yes, video coming out tomorrow 👍
I wonder if this issue could happen while you are driving or if it is only when you are in park. This is scary for sure

Wonder if I can return this leased car because of this.

Nice! GH as a contractors vehicle. Love to hear it !

No spare key for up to 1 year after delivery
That key inside the fob is normally for the glove box.
Pro tip keep spare key fob batteries in the glove box
Carry a new remote battery guys!
so you also need to pay for the drive connect subscription past the one year free trial period in order to get this to troubleshoot. Otherwise, the key fob battery replacement itself wouldnt have solve the issue. 😤
sounds like a recall

If you touch your fob against the button of the car and push the start button with the remote your car will start
They have to read the handbook to know that😅
Was about to buy one
It’s a great car! There’s no 7 seater I’d rather have for the price. But like any first model year, there will small kinks to iron out
I just bought one. Family and I love it. If you decide not to buy because of a key fab battery you are missing out on an amazing vehicle

Love my 2016 Highlander but Toyota going downhill.
Yeah its a shame, Toyota and Honda are slipping. Still the best vehicles in my opinion but quality has been dropping for many years.
This video made little sense to me. Be clear and to point on solution
Key lost power to the point where I couldn’t hold the key to the start button for 4 seconds to start it in service mode until I had replaced the fob battery and waited 20 minutes until the car sensed the key.
