--- Fishing --- Bait: - The default bait, that Haldor sells, only works on some fish. Mainly those you find at the coasts of the meadows biome. - Fish from other biomes, including those found in the open ocean won't bit on it. - Other bait needs to be crafted from the default bait and a trophy that has some connection to the fish you want to catch. Often but not always, it is a trophy that is found in the same biome as the fish. - You can craft other bait, in a cauldron (might have changed with bog witch update. Casting your line: - Casting it short, makes successfully reeling in fish easier. For more details see stamina mechanic, below. - If you cast the line too far (above 25 m), it might break. On flat ground, you usually can't cast the line farther, anyways. But if you cast from elevation (hilly coast, building, bow of big boat), the line might go farther and break. - Cast of around 10 m, are usually are a good distance. But from a boat or pier, even shorter might be beneficial. Hooking fish: 1. After a line cast, closely observe your bobber. It might wiggle a bit, as soon as the fish nibble at the bait, but that does not mean they have bitten. 2. When the bobber drops unter water and a bright bubble appears, start reeling quickly, to hook the fish. If it does not bite, you where too slow. Then wait until those indicators appear again and repeat. 3. After the fish is hooked, it usually won't escape, unless your stamina runs out or you stretch the line too long. I think ~28 m was the limit. So don't panic and reel in frantically and don't run on land, too fast. Be calm and deliberate. Reeling in and collecting fish: There are three ways to collect the fish: a) The default way is just reeling it in completely, which automatically picks up the fish. b) If it is dangling from the line in reach, you can pick it up with E, F or whatever your default pickup button is. c) You can walk backwards, pulling it on land, and then pick it up from there, even if the line breaks. Basic stamina mechanics of fishing: - When your stamina runs out, you loose the catch. - Reeling in while the fish does not fight, takes less stamina. - Reeling in while the fish actively tries to swim away consumes more stamina. So pause reeling then. - Raising your fishing skill reduces the stamina drain and increases the speed at which you reel in. - More advanced fish (usually found in more advanced biomes) are more difficult to reel in. - All fish species come in different size categories 1 to 5. The bigger ones require more stamina to reel in. - So it is best to start with small ones and those in easier biomes, like the meadows. Stamina optimization: - Before you start fishing prepare three good stamina foods and eat them. - Bring some stamina meads and pop one in case your stamina runs out while reeling in. - If stamina is an issue, try throwing your line shorter, so you don't need to reel it in for far. That way your stamina will more likely last until you reeled the fish in. Other useful things: - Building four or five stairs up and outwards from the shore, over the water can help with fishing. It makes you see the fish much easier, by improving the angle you look at the refracting water surface. Since you fish the fish you see, permanent fishing docks are not that useful. Better to walk along a coast, until you spot some fish and then build a temporary one. Skill: - You acquire fishing skill XP for reeling in the line, no matter if a fish is on it or not. - When a fish is on it, you get double XP. - Since you only loose the bait, when a fish bites or the line breaks, you can train your fishing skill by throwing the line for around 25 m, and then reeling it completely in. If you throw for farther, the line might break and you loose the bait.
@@wohlfman_ best bet is to fish on shores with slope sides get the fish close ish to shore and walk it onto land, walk forward and click directly on the fish. stamina potions are very handy when fishing. oh and your fishing skill will improve on reeling in even with no fish attached, you will only attract fish if theyre physically in the water and fish will only be attracted to the correct bait. save up some trophies for crafting other bait types.
I see there is already a very very nice fishing guide in the comments so I will just mention that you can build a dirt and wood walled in lane of water from a pier with a roof ..catch 10x level 1 Perch and toss them into the lane and make sure the lane is in some workbench grids so they dont despawn and you have your own infinite catch&release fishing skill trainer. (fishing skill also affect your drag power when you harpoon something). Good Luck 😁. If you throw in the line from a Karve, sit down to steer and sail at speed 1 while dragging the line after boat..fish will catch up and you can reel em in and if they are tough then put the boat in reverse to shorten the distance to reel in

I never would have figured this all out on my own.
Once reeling in a fish it drains your stamina when you run out of stamina you lose the fish
