so basically if you’re a normal high schooler your activities aren’t good enough. what abt a sport? drama? stage crew? you know, normal things that high schoolers do that take up their time.
You could get into a local or state university most likely. But these types of videos are for students who want to get into Ivys or the top ranking schools. It's for the TOP top.
Its so stange to think like . . Yeah to other people who aren't locked in from the start of freshman year, this seems "absurd", when now adays its what you need to get into college.
What reality check. This is the minimum to get into a T20 school based on extracurriculars and one other sector. To make it into a top ten school, you’d need 1570+ SAT, one of the amazings that she wrote or an individual high level Olympiad, high ranking in school (top 3 percentile), and a beautiful essay. You’re the one that needs a reality check.
not really. as a freshman, i already have a couple from the okayy category and am beginning my "passion project". To get into top-15 colleges, you need some of these, as well as high SAT scores, great essays, good grades and good recommendations.
Y'all HAVE to start specifying that this is for Ivy League schools bc most normal peiple are NOT doing all that. Even if you are going for Ivy League, be a kid. Time never stops, let's enjoy what we have while we still have it
Nobody will ever convince me that Ivy League schools aren't one of the biggest scams in this country. They are absurdly expensive compared to any normal university, and for what? A very marginally better education and connections that you can develop at other colleges and jobs? No thank you. Maybe if I was born with a golden spoon in my mouth, and going to one of these colleges wouldn't put me in a massive amount of debt for practically the exact same payoff as just going to a state university or something, they'd be worth it. But I wasn't
Times have changed. . . . Colleges used to care about grades mostly, and a bit about clubs. Now its different, grades are only looked at by an algorithm which sorts out people mathematically, the the admisions officers only see people who make it past this, and see grades as like 20% of a larger process. Thus High Schools have adapted. . .
@@CorneliusNutterbucketThe3rd idk then. . The idea that not a single club at your high school was related to medicine, law, science, coding, etc. is hard to believe. These are kids, they don’t need to be wasting their childhood trying to achieve this absurd standard of success. They can have a great future and go a good school by trying hard at the things they do and leaving time to learn how to be a person, not just a list of accomplishments. If it is fulfilling to them to do these things, that should be why they should do them, not impress colleges. The most important thing they will do in high school to prepare them for life is not starting a business, winning national competitions, or founding a club, it’s adjusting to responsibilities and identity as they grow up. That can’t be expressed on a college application, and it doesn’t need to be. The point of doing things is not to show that you did them, but learning from them.
Actual admissions professional: we are much more impressed by a part time job than founding a club or having a project. It requires a higher level of responsibility and often leadership than an optional school based club. We also notice when you join a bunch of stuff your senior year to pad your application. If you didnt realize this was important until senior year I would recommend making a significant commitment to one job, effort or project over signing up for 10 clubs
Also, unless your business is like super super successful, it’s not gonna make it easier for you to get in college. No one cares that you’re selling art on Etsy. (Inless said art is making thousands of dollars.) but then also it’s only helpful for a business focus degree if you’re going to school for biology, they do not care if you have a successful business or not because you’re probably not going to be a biology entrepreneur lol
this is depressing because i am only in the “eh” section and genuinely do not know how to get to the other levels (my school has over 300 clubs, i cannot think of one that is already created. i am not the slightest bit good at any specific thing to even be competing in national competitions. and i do not have the time or passion to start a passion project)
If it means anything to you one of my eh clubs I joined and later was helping run has been a life long help to me. It was the dnd club. If we're gonna go back into reality, extracurriculars in general will get you a better chance into getting into college. This is because it shows that you want to do things and you are commited. A very good one that I do is band. Go out for things in your clubs too, don't just go, try and be the leader or secretary or some type of higher position within the clubs
Hi I'm 29 and I want all the kids here to know that NOTHING is worth college debt. If you and your family cannot pay out of pocket DO NOT sell the next 20 years of your life for it. There is a way. Work and save for community college. Live with mom and dad as long as you can. Go entry level in the field you think you wanna major in to make sure you actually like it. DO NOT GO INTO STUDENT LOAN DEBT. IT ISNT WORTH IT. YOU DESERVE BETTER !!!
I agree. These kids will get a reality check once they see their student loans, and they’ll see the kids who took community college end up richer than them in the long term. The only way I’d go to a college would be if I could get in for a reduced price. If your family makes below a certain income (which you could always lie about) you can get reduced or free tuition.
As a current student at a top college, this is some bullshit. Do what you want and need to do. This is so disconnected from the reality of surviving and living.

I feel like the creator of this list has a slight bias towards passion projects because they engaged in one in high school.
I am not sure if I would count winning completions as extracurricular, since it's more of an achievement involving an extra curricular. The extra curricular is the speech and debate club, and going to nationals and winning anything is a type of achievement. I went to nationals ans states a few times for clubs, so that was only a part of a regular club attendance.
