  • On that Saturday evening, two mysterious gunmen would burst into the home and hold the lady, Shirley Merritt, and her son forty-seven-year-old son, Richard, hostage. Then, one of the gunmen became agitated and stabbed Shirley to death.
A robbery gone wrong? Or a complete fabrication? This was the version of events given by Richard Merritt as to how his mother came to meet her final end. Unfortunately for him though, nobody believed him, and they were right to be suspicious.

I think he was going to use the 2 weeks to escape his sentence and he just needed his mother to find him and aide in the escape. He might have even tried to get her to sign a will in front of him before he threw her down the basement stairs in a rage when she was not willing to lose the money she put up for him to get the conditional two weeks. If we knew how much she was on the hook for, maybe we could be fairly certain that was her issue with not wanting to help him escape.
He had a half a plan which suits his situation of having less than half a brain

The judge went on a 20 or 40 minute rant (I can’t remember) calling him a narcissist several times, and calling him out before he was given the “opportunity” to make himself look even worse by addressing the court. I highly recommend watching it. I listen to many true crime stories but for some reason this one really drove home a compelling message to over indulgent parents who don't allow their children to become independent, self sufficient adults. Absolutely enjoyed the way it ways delivered...do enjoy this channel and the presenter empathetic tone throughout.

Poor Shirley. It's sad she didn't see how awful Richard had become. Unfortunately her enabling and supporting his awful behavior did not help. But I have no doubt that Richard likely would have killed even if his mother never supported him. Glad to hear his ex wife got away from this psycho. RIP Shirley.

There’s nothing wrong with helping your children, as long as you can afford it. Her son was the problem! The mother had no way of knowing what he would do to her. Her murder makes no sense and is beyond a tragedy. She seemed like such a sweet person. She had to be so confused. I hope she is resting is peace.

So for someone to do this type of thing to their mother is just uncomfortable, brings tears to my eyes that he did this, damn if you can't trust family who can you trust.. RIP🎉🎉

It's not complicated to say no, they will be better people for it and actual functioning adults too! I know right?! Who knew?! LoL

That's the kind of father everyone man should shrive to be and an unbelievably loving mother that everyone would love to have. If you're a good parent you sacrifice your own wants and desires and put your children first. In return if they understood a fraction of what you tried to instill in them, then you could pass away peacefully knowing you did you most important job. Or you do all that and they kill you for money.

I can't believe this guy is for real. He may be one of the stupidest people I think I've ever seen on one of these and that's saying something. His poor Mum, seriously, murdering your elderly Mum like that is such a cold, cruel thing to do. Especially when she appeared to know he was a dick and was incredibly supportive to him regardless. Shirley was a wonderful woman and it's so sad that he did not love and appreciate her.

The mother was the enabler of the nan who killed her. She aided and abetted him.
He knew he didn't have to try in school so was happy to be a failure.
She sponsored him to the hilt and the good son couldn't bare to watch so fled the scene.
She pampered him to death, her death. She created the monster.
