Out of curiosity I wanted to find out how Shimano derailleur clutches work. It's the only video that explains it in great detail and straight to the point. Great work. Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot! My derailleur worked quite imprecisely for a while. Since yesterday it made a awful sound in addition. By using your tutorial I was able to fix it perfectly. Dismount, clean, grease, mount, ready to go.
Have a Shimano ST EF51L front shifter that would not shift up. It sat outside for a few years, including winters with snow. After watching your video and understanding what was preventing it from shifting, I was able to disassemble the shifter while it was still on the handlebar. Found the spring on the pawl was rusted. After cleaning it up I was able to free it up and get it working. It was a challenge to put the lever that holds the pawl back on so that the spring was in the proper position to return the shifter back to it's proper position with the spring tension. It took me a dozen trys. It would have been a snap with a thin metal tool with a notch to hold the spring in position while putting back in the lever that holds that pawl. It was still quicker and cheaper than bringing the bike to a repair shop or going to the store, buying and putting on a new one.
Just got a bike with this newer style derailleur. I was curious how this mechanism worked but didn't have the guts to open it myself yet because I was afraid of what might come out from under that cover. Thanks so much for posting this.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. I've noticed chain/cassette and even jockey wheels have been wearing out very fast. Hope this loosening tip will give it a little extra life
great video, thanks a bunch. cleared a lot for me too! i am dealing with XT shadow+ here. not sure if its too tight or not yet but my shifting with clutch set to OFF is way smoother and easier.
***** actually, i really think my xt shadow+ is overtightened. of course i might be wrong still but i just got another new bike which came with slx shadow+ and it works much much smoother with the clutch on. that leads me to believe my xt rear mech on the first, also new bike is indeed overtighten. but i still have to open it up and see if i can tweak it. did not have the time to get to it yet. will do it soon for sure. you got a great bike and i loved the video on the b-spec shifters and brake leavers. i learned about them from your vid. good job and keep up the good vids.
***** a question: did you try sram shifters + derailer and did not like it? I am asking around what is better shimano or sram. keep hearing different things. did not own a sram stuff yet.
I have heard the clutch mechanism does make shifts a little stiffer in reply to Oleo's comment. Yet to test my new XT shadow+ (replaced a non-clutch XT that I found very distracting on downhill single track). Strange that Shimano didn't include a maintenance document with this product?! Great walkthrough, thanks mate.
thanks for the video, really help me fix my RD. the retention was weak, so I opened it after watching your video, apparently the inside screw was loose. not it works like new again.
Good video and explanations, simple and direct, no huh hah (like other annoying utubers,...eg how're you? sponsored by tesla, ufo etc :). As an engineering chap, you got good technical affinity). Keep it up bro!
Thanks! And the Tesla episode...I got hacked just like LinusTech☹ bastards are getting very persistent and creativ. As for the clutch maintenance I have a newer one if needd - ruclips.net/video/Ztf38cO2Ej4/видео.html
Very helpful video. I mine just went crap last weekend and now looking for parts online. If not gonna go to my LBS to have them order it directly on shimano
I find I have to lube or replace inner gear cable a lot as shifting becomes very very stiff . Great with new cables but how can I keep it running nice ?
Do you have it set to the off position only when changing the wheel ? I don't like the shift in on position very stiff will give it a look over may need adjustment.
Great video thank you for all the information. I was wondering when I first got my bike I put the clutch on so that it would reduce the chain slapping. I could barely move the bottom derailleur forward. I noticed it's a lot easier now. If I move the screw on the inside of the clutch is there a certain depth you can screw it in? Just a little confused. Thank you
Great video. A stick broke my clutch on/off lever switch. Can you replace this switch easily by just pressing out small rectangular part in center of the cam mechanism? Thanks!
+LoveMTB yes very odd but sticks have a way of crazy results!. Here's the part I think. Looks like it slides in but not sure if it really means complete disassembly to install. Or special tool? www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/181425385840
i have the XT M8000 now i try i can explain when you move your hanger up down right now i can push that to the spoke and to me right there's a little play is this normal or can i tighten it ?
i liked this video i am having a bit of chain slap and i am going to try and adjust the clutch, i am how ever looking for a torque wrench could you recommend one ?
Noob-question: Should the clutch be engaged or disengaged while riding? Haven't understood yet why you need a clutch on a rear derailleur, any informative page would be highly appreciated.
Unfortunately, i just roundet one of the clutch cover screws. I don't know why, but they were tight as heck, plus, my multi tool is not great quality, and i didn't know the screws were so delicate. Any tips to remove it? Is it possible to find a new clutch cover and screws? Sorry for asking you so many things :)
I haven't found a way to remove the screw without damaging it and making it useless. But i miraculously found some screws in my house wich fit in, they are a little too long but i can cut then and they seem to fit nicely. They don't have that little metal step between the head and the treads tho. It shouldn't affect sealing since the rubber seal is not affected by that, maybe it could affect strenght and durability of both the screw and the plastic cover, but i think it will work just as fine
Nice video man. I`ve seen your other videos of the rear derailleurs with shadow plus, so since you have the four, I would like to ask you wich one you think is the best considering the price and in case is a considerable difference when changing gears. I broke my Altus 8speed derailleur and i want to upgrade to a 10speed and I just want something that is worth the upgrade. So what do you suggest?
***** Thanks for answering. I decided to go with the Deore M615 because of the price. Today I saw your other video comparing the shimano and sram cassettes, and found interesting the idea of putting the 42t sprocket, so now my questiong would be if the Deore M615 will be able to handle that 42t sprocket. If helps i will by the m771 because is easier to remove the 15 and 17 sprockets also my bike is a 29er.
Hi I have the m786 mech and it's only 2 months old (300miles) and the cage is getting stuck and not always taking up the chain slack, would adjusting the clutch fix this problem? the unit is very clean.
+LoveMTB yes with the clutch on or off sometimes only snaps back 3/4 of the way. The unit is almost new and spotless I had the same problem with my previous derailleur but that was over 2 years and 3000 miles old. Any ideas?
If it is clean in there, your torque values are within reason, and it is operating well, I don't see why you can't just switch the shadow plus off to create a little slack and add a little grease in the slack around the shaft with a grease needle (Or tooth pick), reassemble, and ride. My only issue has been forgetting to turn it back on after cleaning/lubing my chain from time to time!
hello , first thank you for the video , it's awesome keep it up ! i have a few questions . i have a mtb and i broke my derailler hanger i have a new one on order but i would like to get a new derailler as well becouse i currently have a shimano xt m781 with no clutch and i would like to get myselft a clutch mech for as little money as possible . i have my eyes on the deore m615 clutch mech because i can get it for 30 euros . i may be able to get the slx one but i don't think it would be worth it . as i have the xt mech already , could i put the nice sealed pullies on a deore or slx mech ? thanks for the good work and hope to get an answer soon.
I went to my LBS (99 bikes Burleigh Heads QLD) to get mine repaired after it filled with water and then rusted. They told me there were no spares provided by Shimano and I'd have to buy a new one. Which I did! Now I'm angry because the original could have been repaired.
Yeah they don't seem to stock parts in Australia, they expect you to buy a new mech at 2 to 3 times the price you can buy it online. Very very annoying.
Actually, in some regions, it is a real bitch to get original Shimano spare parts. The bit that goes between the derailleur and derailleur hanger? Took over a month to deliver to the shop and only a handful of retailers in my region are actually able to get it.
Absolutely great tutorial - with this I was able to find a solution for the problem I had with the dynasysII, thx a lot.

THX!! Great explanation, well done. I've searched pretty much tutorials with no result. Your description of the function was exactly right.

Thank you for the incredibly detailed and useful tutorial! Clutch is working like new again! Cheers!
Clear ,easy to understand tutorial! Deff should upgrade to the new kit to avoid an incident on a ride!
cheers for the vid , gave my clutch a quick tighten to stop the chain from falling off a NW chainwheel and works mint .
Superb instructions and nice camera work too.👍
Please make some more videos like this one. The perfect and simple explanation
Congratulations.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. I've noticed chain/cassette and even jockey wheels have been wearing out very fast. Hope this loosening tip will give it a little extra life

Great vid
Very great sir. Thanks, cause i'm having this issue with my XT and it's got about 500km on mine.
Nice video, but what is the purpose of the clutch ?? Do you want more tension or less and why ??
Off-road, so the chain does not drop
One more question, should I adjust the clutch while on or off position?
I find I have to lube or replace inner gear cable a lot as shifting becomes very very stiff . Great with new cables but how can I keep it running nice ?
Fantastic video, thanks

What should I do if the lever to turn the clutch on and off snapped off? Thanks for the video it was helpful.
Yea i took the lever off my old broken derailleur and put in on
Nice video
Thank you
Noob-question: Should the clutch be engaged or disengaged while riding? Haven't understood yet why you need a clutch on a rear derailleur, any informative page would be highly appreciated.
+RatzengeliS yeah, i just noticed it is locked when it is assembled on a bike. you can't disengage it unless taken off, right?
if i leave my clutch on all the time will it spoil?
@LoveMTB Can i lubricate my clutch while my rear meh is on bike? i dont want to take it of...
Very helpful. Thanks
Where online did you find the part? I can't seem to find it....Great video by the way.
My bolt on my clutch system keeps loosening up should i apply a little bit of thread locker? My rd is Deore m6000 gs 10sp
@@LoveMTB The one that you tighten to adjust the tension of the clutch is what i mean.

+LoveMTB would that cause the chain to pop off the front derailleur and get stuck between the chainring and shifter?
