Just remember that you aren’t betraying the memory of your previous German Shepherd, or trying to replace him.
You give a new dog the love you gave the previous one, and also the love a new one deserves and before you know it you’ll realize what you’ve been missing since the loss of your previous dog friend.

I had a German Shepherd mix (i.e. Cody) for 14 yrs (Dec. 1989-Feb. 2004), and I couldn't get another dog because the loss was painful. After 7 yrs., I decided to get another dog... a purebred German Shepherd (April 2011). I'm so glad I did. Cheyenne is eager to learn, smart, and loyal. Absolutely the best friend I ever had. If I didn't buy her, her life might have been much worse. She's 13 yrs old now, and still playing fetch, but a little slower now. I'm 67, and not sure if I have enough years remaining to buy another one when Cheyenne passes on. Meanwhile, I'm gonna try to help Cheyenne make it to 20+ yrs old, and then I'll be 74+. A well trained German Shepherd is a nice deterrent against idiots who like to attack the elderly.

best breed for someone with an incredibly busy life and lot's of green around the home is likely petit basset grifon vendeen, (these dogs are incredibly intelligent and very affectionate but they excell at patience and like to keep themselves busy)

There are many variables to any breed's personality. You're repeating the textbook version of the working mal.
It's also improbable that even from working lines all will have personalities indicative of a working line dog, an occasional dog will not be high drive, it's statistics. If a person wants to own a Malinois, statistics are in their favor that they'll find a mal that will fit their lifestyle.
Malinois behavior is on a spectrum from the insanely high drive and driven to a very chill personality plus everything in between. For a first-time owner I recommend they go to a Malinois rescue, where they will match the dog's personality to the human's reasonable expectations and experience.

I think people need to learn with breeds like the Malinois is that it’s best to admire these dogs from afar.
They are exceptional dogs that shine ONLY with exceptional owners/ handlers. German Shepards are great working dogs and family dogs. Malinois are perfect working dogs, made for work. Not companionship. To see one in action is amazing!

Malis are great companions if you live a very active lifestyle. If you do alot of outside sports, alot of hiking etc. Or want a dog that you can start in dogsports and activitis malis are great. If you barley leave the house... not so good.
I do own a mali because i needed a dog that could keep up with my horse. He neded to be active and intelligebt. So we got a Mali. Hes trained in protection work but mostly we do tracking because he likes to find things. Hes great with kids an people as long as you dont hurt his "Pack" hes very protective of my niece. Hes always keeping watch and outs himself between her and strangers.
Malis make great dogs if you can give them what they need. You wouldnt put a kid with bad adhd in a booring room with nothing to do and be surprised afterwards it acted out

    • @smileydude12
      @smileydude12 4 месяца назад +5

I would argue you can easily have a Malinois if you stimulate them plenty. Lots of people that have them as pets are not only very active but give them activities like bite training and things like that so they can be calm in the home. I deliver weed for a living and one of the shop owners has 3. He brings the female to work with him and she is an angel.

L❤VE, SAFE & lots of travel cross 🇺🇸.

My uncle/grandparents had a black and silver German Shepherd. My grandparents had a business basically in their backyard. The dog was so mellow and friendly to everyone. When my sister was a baby, she was in some type of swing or bouncy thing, a nice customer started to walk towards my sister and even though was smiling and calm, Tara got between them and first I ever saw her bare her teeth at anyone. Never once was she taught to do that, she just knew. She was born around the time that I was, so I don't know for certain if she had any training. Was always close to her, went through a time of playing hide and seek. We would bring her inside and by the time she worked the door opened and opened the screen door, we could be hiding. Never took her long and there were some places where a person would never have thought to look or you could move from one spot to the next to evade a person, not her nose, eyes, and almost psychic ability. Have always wanted my own, but always ended up with one dog or another over the decades. Besides, by the time my childhood dog was dying, the Shepard had already been gone a few years and obviously way past having more pups even several years earlier. One of the best dogs I've ever known and I've known hundreds over the years, only had about 7 or 8 different types or mixes or total mutts. The mutts lived the longest always.

Must have been the green uniforms but he always fawned over them despite being kicked once by an officer who obviously hated dogs. If he'd had a chance I have no doubt he would have driven off a sheriff vehicle, he was that smart.

They are super smart dogs. They will follow you everywhere even in bathroom. If they didnt see you for 2 minutes its like you have been missing for years. Very important to train them young and they need open area to run around otherwise they will get sick. To them 72 degrees is hot. Make sure they have always watter to drink

For sports like schutzhund I give Mal's the edge... For real personal protection where the dog may have to actually engage and Stay in the fight I prefer the shepherds.

I had a GSD / Malinois mix and miss him terribly. A super protective and aware gift with a great nose and energy reader.
      1) on a quick night break in our front yard, and just 20 feet from our front door, Bear stopped, "herded" around me (6 ft leash always), and HE SAT ON MY FEET! THIS WITHIN 5 MINUTES of coming out the door. His ears pointed straight up, nose pointed down the sidewalk into the total darkness, mouth closed (they close mouth to stop panting so they can hear better)... My own radar fully engaged by this point. I had heard nothing. In seconds Bear's head showed me exactly where somewhere came walking noiselessly past us only about 10 feet from us.. only our front hedge between Bear and him...a tall almost invisible figure in black hoodie pulled down over his face, head down, hands in pockets. Locked me in my silence. Bear's nose
stayed pointed directly at him as he passed and he didn't get off my feet until the guy had reached the second house down. Bear did not bark, keeping the advantage of silence and the dark, and his opening his mouth again signaled his job protecting me was done for the moment. The episode unforgettable, and proved how protective and aware he truly was.
2). More than just teeth and fur, Bear showed me another capability. For a few days Bear jammed his muzzle into the right side of my chest. Even though I told him that hurt and to stop it, he did it a few more days. Getting ready for bed, about a week after he started doing this, I noticed blood in the area he was focusing on. His nose helped me find a medical problem that needed surgery to correct. Another protection Bear gave me.
Amazing dog. Since he passed, he checks on me on occasion... I hear him padding up to my bed at night making sure I'm all tucked in, then leaves and probably sits in the living room where he can see front door, slider to back, my bedroom door, and down the hall. Triangulation. So smart. Wonderful devotion.
❤ Thanks for reading. Do pay attention to your GSD's nose sensitivity even for your own health reasons. They really are furry Angels.
