Thanks 4 the tips! Started riding bmx again after 17 yrs 47 and getting on my 20 inch mid skool mongoose after this long feels awesome. Practicing my bunny hop and fakie also my 180.. Appreciate it my dudes🤝🤜🤛
well done guys... I randomly came across your video. Now past 50 and my son almost 6, I dusted off my 25yo S&M Holmes NG (Tiny S&M Divebar, Haro Mega Hubs, and Primo 42 tooth sprocket 🙂) to ride with my son... Best feeling ever! It's cool to ride with your friends... but the next level is riding with your son and seeing how much fun he has to BMX. A passion is born. Your video is perfect for him. Thanks Guys!
Stoked you're here amigo!! & sounds like you've got a kick ass rig, thanks for sharing. How freakin' rad to see him gettin' stoked on something you love, too. Beyond special. I ride a ton with my dad - it's the freakin' best, genuninely looking forward to passing the stoke on to my kid someday too. Glad he was able to find some value in this video!! Y'all rule. All love, -Mike
Really enjoy your videos. Just turned 48 and trying to learn bmx. I bought a Subrosa Malum 20 inch a few months ago. Been working on bunny hop, manual, and fakie, and progress is very slow!
@@oldbiker1976 it always starts out slow, but keep at it and you'll build up those skills to use doing other tricks quickly once you have them at an acceptable level which makes it exciting
RAD!! Thanks for the love amigo. Stoked to hear you picked up a BMX & are makin' moves obn the fundamentals! Like Justin said; those inital skills can be slow going but once you have a found understanding of them what follows will probably suprise you! Stay RAD! -Mike
I'm riding a Sunday Primer 21" TT all stock atm besides some CK whitewalls and a few choice husky nation stickers because i bent the axle on my profile wheel. It's my first proper BMX and I got it at 32 yrs old, all Walmart specials growing up
Oooooh hell yea!! That sounds like a killer build & even more bad ass that it's your first one; there's nothing more special than that first all custom build. Thx for sharing! -Mike
I’m riding a Federal Boyd frame on a planetary fc and 9” Fu bars for street/park and a Cult Devotion frame on drone cs and 8.5” Rambler bars for transitions.
don't currently own a bmx but i'm riding a kona honzo st on mountain bike trails and a 2003 marin bolinas ridge (that i converted from a 3x to 1x drivetrain) on neighborhood streets and multi-use trails. might take the kona to an all-wheels park this weekend if the dirt isn't dry enough to ride.
I see what you did here, I generally agree that these are great tricks for beginners to learn. However some of these are not easy, and will require lots of practice and commitment. I still consider myself a beginner, been riding bmx since February this year. I can do half of these. Bunny hop, fakie with the turn-out, air out of some quarters, and 180 out of banks and 4-5ft flyouts, but not on flat. It took me about 5months to learn how to fakie and then a month to 180 out a bank. Manuals and 180s on flat can take years to learn, as I've been told by many. At my pace of progression, that's about what I expect. However I've met people riding for 3+ years that still cant manual more than a few parking spaces but they can 180 bar spin for example. I don't really consider long manuals a beginner trick because it requires so much bike control to get dialed. I've never met someone that's been riding for less than a year and can hold a manual past 2-3 parking spaces. Cat walks and wheelies though, sure, plenty of kids can do that although its not my cup of tea. I believe there are a few easier tricks that beginners can also learn (that should take significantly less time to progress on) that will help ignite the fire in their bmx journeys. Double peg and feeble grinds on ledges. (double pegs on small rails as well if your brave enough) one-handers & one-footers. Literally the only prerequisite to these is the bunny hop. These tricks can be learned in just a few sessions at the skatepark once you can bunny hop, unlike fakies, manuals, air outs, 180s on flat, and disasters. One handers and one footers are also great because you can take them to the dirt jumps as well instead of being a dead sailor or just doing a tiny whip/bar turn over every jump
It all started with Troy McMurray late 90's/early 2000's, I think I took my brakes off in 2010 & that's around when I started noticing the bikes coming without brakes. Personally I enjoy it becuase it helps you understand how to control the bike even more! -Mike
Oh hell ya!! Two sick rigs & long live BF!! There's a gap at a park I ride that he used to do called the Foster gap, that I was doing yesterday. So fun! -Mike
I'm riding a Fly Bikes Aire frame, it's my friend Larry Edgar's signature frame & Chase is riding my old Cult Walsh, my buddy Corey Walsh's signature frame! Both really fun bikes & pretty simmilar gemoetry w/ 21" toptubes. -Mike
We believe these are the six easiest to learn to then build upon for basically ANY other trick to come, would love to hear what other tricks you believe are better suited for beginners! -Mike

One tip I would add to the manual is don't look down at the ground or the tire keep your chin up and eyes on the horizon
Yes!!! I believe we chat about that in the full manual video but a great tip to help make this skill more approachable!

It's kind of interesting that most freestyle BMX bikes these days seem to come without brakes. When did that become the norm?
It all started with Troy McMurray late 90's/early 2000's, I think I took my brakes off in 2010 & that's around when I started noticing the bikes coming without brakes. Personally I enjoy it becuase it helps you understand how to control the bike even more!
