I don't think I regret not letting go of something sooner. I feel like every item that I let go of left my life just at the right time, when either I didn't need it anymore or I was ready to let it go.
Overall my only regret is not starting my minimalism journey earlier. I got rid of 80% of my stuff when I was 21. I definitely would have benefited from minimalism when I was a teenager. However, seeing so many people discovering the concepts of minimalism way later in life, I should be grateful that I did learn about it as a young adult!

Trying to teach my children minimalism and I hope they one day appreciate it! I didn’t become minimal until I was 29-30. I wish I learned about it sooner as well! I’ve wasted so much money!

@@amberdecerio I am sure they will. My fiance was raised in a minimalist household, his parents were able to get wealthy through modesty and moderation. It's amazing seeing him handling money, he is really good in budgeting and finding balance in spending. He doesn't deprive himself and spends money on hobby equipment but he just isn't attached to stuff and has a clear vision how much you should spend on certain things.

On the Waterpick, never had one until I got braces at 47 years old…will be holding onto it until those torture devices are off! I simply cannot floss between some of my teeth and the 8 springs in my mouth, but yes, I can see that it’s a pain to keep on my tiny counter and it just makes my bathroom look messy even when it’s tidy😉

I no longer do that to myself. If the investment is worth the quality and longevity I just spend the money. Thanks for sharing.

I feel like your filing cabinet was more of a learning experience than a real regret.
We all have tried to prepare for new circumstances by buying stuff we think we will need (like you did with your office supplies). After a while, you try to repurpose the stuff and then you get rid of it at some point. This experience a) showed you that it's better to wait with the purchase and see what you will actually need and b) seems to have gotten you so much further in reducing papers. Whatever you spent on that filing cabinet was money well spent as a learning fee, these are two really important lessons.
You don't have or need a scanner? How do you digitize documents? Do you just take a picture of them?
I LOVE my scanner and my filing cabinets.
I got my two filing cabinets second hand for a few bucks and they were such a good investment for me. I love detailed organization and I cannot imagine a better way for me to keep my paper under control.
I use three file folders for long term storage, two filing cabinets for all the paper I need to work with, a flexible ring binder where I keep my to do and brain dumping lists, my scanner, a punch and a high quality pen. This is all I need as office supplies. No stapler, no post-its, no paper clips and no tape for me.
I encourage everyone to try out what works best for them. Paper clutter is such a big deal for a lot of people, getting it under control is worth the cost to buy and try some materials as long as you declutter what doesn't work for you.

    • @MiaDanielle

Again with the GREAT insights! 😍 Definitely a huge learning experience of what I don't want or need.
I don't have a scanner, there are apps on your phone that act like a scanner that I can quickly pass my documents through, and the ones that I do need to keep (which are very few), I place into the binder you saw in the video.

    • @Conval-wi5eh
      @Conval-wi5eh Год назад

@@MiaDanielle I love that you are able to use your phone for scanning, you are definitely an inspiration for using multi purpose items!
What I love about a scanner is that I can make a good scan even when the lighting is awful (it's really dark in winter where I live). I invested in a Doxie, they are small and do high quality scans. My partner uses it, too.
Yesterday I showed my mom how to use it, she visited me and needed some documents scanned. By the time we got to it it was already dark outside. Although she isn't into tech, she caught on how to use it fast. I was really proud of her, she tends to struggle with paper clutter.

Haha! I have my things as well I regret keeping.
That clothing that will some day fit…
    Teflon pans….
Birthday decorations from everyone of my children’s birthdays….
Jewelry I wore 15 years ago not likely to wear again, but kept because sentimental….
Having just purged all of these categories, I think to myself, this feels so good. Why did I wait so long?
What’s funny is 4 of your categories are essential for my family’s life.
    •Books & •file cabinets… we homeschool 🤍
We also have lots of medical conditions and hospital, medical, billing documentation.
•Floss… my kids don’t like water picks.
    •And photos… I love creating photo albums.
One family photo album every two years .
    They are my family’s favorite.
In the hospital or just in our down time at-least 6x a years we go through the photo pages and remember and laugh together.
It’s wonderful how everyone has their own favorites in life.

I live in the Netherlands and we have the PFAS fabric in my city so I know how bad PFAS is for a human being. I only have ceramic coatings in my pans, but still our water, soil and air is polluted with the PFAS.
My books are a different story...I do get rid of some books that I have read, but I also have a lot of special books that I do read over and over again so they stay 😅.
And for the photos I keep the ones that I made at concerts because sometimes the artists come back for them and I also have to keep the photorolls for the copyright. This used to be a side job for me.

Carlien! That's totally OK! I know you've been following a while, so you must've heard me say by now that if you use it or it has personal value to you, you keep it! I was not aware of the Teflon issues. We’re slowly replacing our pots and pans. Recently we purchased the Beautiful collection by Drew Barrymore. They looks just like Carraway, which is great since they are a cheaper option. The Beautiful collection is the first set of pots and pans that are truly nonstick we’ve ever had. Highly recommend if you can’t afford Carraway right now.

Used to hoard paper clutter in high school I kept every paper since middle school. As an adult I'm a bit more selective but I need to really do better by it.
I feel like I need more photo prints or photo books rather than digital.
I digitize my photos and then I never end up looking at them much. It wastes storage space on my computer. Plus, I'm not as digitally inclined or knowledgeable as others are nowadays.
So, I think photos would be better physically for me & papers might be better digitally. Not sure on either.

Ha ha. Omg. Waterpic. I was just debating this one. Mine is an actual water pick. Now I know I’m just letting it go. It’s also funny Bcuz I think when I try to use it, it “cleans” the bathroom more than my mouth. 😂😂 That thing is nutso. Just spraying water all over the place and then I get far too close to an OCD episode (that’s my main OCD issue. Water drops. You’d think it was poisoned hot lava the way I can’t seem to ever let stray drops linger. Oh well. Lol). Plus I have this weird modern sink from hell anyways. 😅😅
My “office” is a little antique writing desk and one cute file box. Lol. I don’t use the hanging files now tho. I just use a few paper file jackets and some that are thicker file jackets. It’s a little funny that the box isn’t full tho, so they flop back. Might get a smaller box or put them in the desk drawer or something. Bottom desk drawer is empty already and the others aren’t packed too much either. Lol. Strange tho. I haven’t used clips or a stapler or hole punch in years. I think I need to give it another redo. Lol.

@@BbGun-lw5vi Lol. IKR! I cringe when I see people flinging their hands around after they wash up. Do they not realize someone has to clean all that up? 😅😅 Why not just lower your hands into the sink and do it? Seems easy to me, but there they go anyways.
I have tried to figure out exactly why I’m that way. Water phobia? Lol. Bcuz I love swimming etc and I’m not scared of that. Bcuz crappy construction where I didn’t have caulking? Bcuz of my cats making bigger messes in a wet space? Childhood trauma? All of the above? I just can’t help noticing all the messes animals and humans make around water tho and I notice what wet stuff might go behind a gap space and ruin the wall or floor or such. 😅😅

    • @BbGun-lw5vi
      @BbGun-lw5vi Год назад +1

@@goodenoughgirl8102 (sigh) It’s so nice to be understood.
I’m also hyper aware of the messes animals and people make around water and concerned of it staying in the gaps of the sink, wall, and floors.
I have also tried to figure mine out. Here are the reasons I’ve come up with:
I’ve had OCD tendencies my whole life. I worry about stupid stuff that other people don’t seem to give any thought. It takes me forever to clean.
I had a little mold from badly placed caulking on the bottom of my bathroom mirror.
That combined with horrible stories about mold that I’ve read online.
I have a question. Do you make sure that something is 100% dry before storing away? I’m talking about waiting for a while longer even when the item look dry, just in case.
For example, I could never wipe the dishes dry with a towel before storing away. It would haunt me.

I'm the second eldest surviving member of the family by 1 month. The eldest male in the family at 57 yo. I'm in position of over 50 lbs of negatives and film footage that go back to ww 1. Hand carved spoons ,rolling pin, and butter paddles that my great great grandfather hand carved for my great grandmother's wedding gift in 1906. Glass and stone ware to before the civil war. Bibles with hand written notes over a hundred years old. Deads ant titles to land going to the late 1600s. My home is a museum.

I would say, it may be very kind to donate these treasures to a museum for more people to enjoy! You could make a video recording walking through the house and sharing all the memories attached to the items for yourself. I just was thinking it must feel overwhelming to have to keep items from 5 generation of people. But if you feel happy keeping up with it all, then enjoy!
