  • A day in my life as a Respiratory Therapist… sorta lol

    This is a chill day on the floors. Some floor therapies include SVN’s (a lot), airway clearance, lung expansion, nasotracheal suctioning, ABG’s, and a ton of applying/titrating oxygen. Also, definitely can’t forget patient assessment. A big part of our job is listening out for rapid repsonses and code blue calls for our assigned floors 🤞🏽

    I’m Cecilia, thanks for watching! I just moved
    back to my home state and decided to start my own yt channel. Hoping to share some pieces of my life and grow connections with you all 🤍 Let’s be friends

    RT of 30 years here. You did a great job explaining what RT entails. When people ask me I usually ask them if they or anyone they know has an airway. Lol. When they say yes I explain we maintain said airway and give breathing treatments among other things. That answer usually leads to more questions which is when I go into detail about RT. Anywho, you did a great job!!! Keep up the great work!!!!

    I’m looking into a respiratory therapy program starting in the Spring of 2022 and the biggest factor holding me back is performing a blood gas. I recognize that it’s a needed procedure but I’m terrified of hurting someone in that way. I wouldn’t want to inflict any sort of pain and it makes me really nervous. Blood really doesn’t bother me, it’s the fact that everyone reports that it’s super painful. Any tips? Any info?

    • @ceciliaamorena3353
      @ceciliaamorena3353  Год назад +1

      It's just like any procedure, it's not fun for the patient. The nurses poke and prod them all day long so by the time we come in, they're expecting it. The good thing is, we don't have to poke everyone (tons of patient don't need it) and almost every patient in the ICU has an A-line that we can pull blood from without a needle. Once you master an ABG, it should only take about 2 min of the needle being inside them. Most patient's are so fatigued/lethargic once you show up that they don't really feel the pain.

    • @ceciliaamorena3353
      @ceciliaamorena3353  Год назад +1

      We maintain the airway so the first thing we do is make sure the patient is breathing/ has a pulse. From there we will administer oxygen if needed and obtain a blood gas. If the patient isn't breathing, we immediately bag them and start preparing for possible Intubation. Best thing about being an RT during a code blue is being at the head of the bed!

      RT bedside is so much better than RN, however there are many more opportunities outside of bedside for RN that may be worth your while. I make over $60,000 being an RT and since the pandemic it's very very easy to find jobs including travel. It's a tough decision for sure

      @@sylviatr1990 I love the low stress environment (at least lower than a hospital), normal hours and flexibility of rdh. Pay is surprisingly great too, schooling isn’t too long. People won’t die on you if you make a mistake 😅 Of course it has its cons too! And something about RT draws me in and I can’t tell why. I haven’t looked much into sonography! Hope you decide soon, best of luck!

      Find "your person". Doesn't have to be family but should be someone who's comfortable talking about the details you wish to share. Could be a coworker, friend, or therapist. Just be sure they're okay with it before :)

      There is quite a bit of math (more than I expected), however it’s memorizing equations to understand the fundamentals of oxygenation and ventilation. Once you begin working, the math is not used much bc technology will do it for you
